ej207 hybrid?
Hello everyone, this is my first subi (02 ts wagon) im no stranger to the modification world my other 2 cars are a 71 datsun 510 and a 01 s2000. The subi is my dd so I dont want to get too crazy with it.
So if I decide I want to dump a fair amount of money into it engine wise this is what im concertinaing. I like the wagon so im not interested in getting a wrx or sti. proir to buying I did the math figuring insurance costs and such and the ts wagon which i got for a really really good deal made the most financial sense even with a swap cost factored in. My power goal would be 280whp 300-320tq so in my head if I decide to go through with this my plan is a full ej207 version 6 sti ra with dccd swap 2.5 sti block ( I can get a pretty good discount through subi for it) tomei procams tomei headgaskets tomei unequal ex manifold tomei downpipe greddy evo 3 exhaust greddy emanage ultimate to run it (i have one laying around) so with this setup I should have 9:1 comp good torque and fast spool up. What sort of issues would I run into. Ive looked to a bunch of threads and there seems to be mixed reviews on ej20 heads on 2.5 sti blocks. Im being rushed right now so im sure I left some things out. In advance thank you. pete

re-read those hybrid threads. If you don't get your heads chamber matched, you'll experience the same problems/limited potential the other owners have.

Well there would be no point doing it half ass. I was hoping to get away with a plug and play.
If machine work is needed would I be better served going with a cosworth 2.2 stroker kit, instead of the 2.5 sti block and chamber matching? |

Stock ej207 ver 8, stg 2 bolt on, the power you want, simple. That's on EFI Logics heart breaker dyno, no need to strengthen the motor for the power you are after, they can handle it. Want more power, upgrade the turbo and spurting mods, no problem getting 350-380 whp on a stock bottom end. Many people get ver 7 motors for the forged pistons, perhaps that's where you should start too.

Thank you D-rodman, I'm glad to see the power I would want be "easily achieved"
From what I can find the version 6 sti ra has forged pistons. I was hoping to keep the factory turbo(looking for full boost around 2800), the main reason I want the ver 6 sti ra set up is for the 5 speed trans and f&r diffs and dccd. Money wise it makes more sense to buy a half cut and use the ver 6 ej20. So for my power goals of 280whp and 320wtq and full boost around 2800rpm would a 2.2L stroker kit be a "waste" of money |

I'm sure a stroker would deliver more torque. Getting full torque by 2800 rpm is the trick, that's 950 rpm earlier than on my setup. With the ebcs I get to full boost 500 rpm earlier than without it. I guess it's all in the tune, I'm not sure I would want full power delivered at 2800 rpm, the ej207 with functional avcs has plenty of torque down low. I don't feel my car is laggy, when I drive my other wrx with the stock td04 and just basic stage 2 I feel it's a small margin livelier on spool up but the difference is negligible. When the vf37 gets going there is a night and day difference between my two cars, the ej207 has the freakin devil inside. Then I realize why the ej205/td04 even if it feels like it can spool a bit livelier can't compare to the ej207/vf37, there is more power across the rpm range, from bottom to top. The slight advantage in spool up is meaningless when the power output is inferior. If you can get lots power and quick spool you got magic, that's the trick.

OP keep in mind going v6, you will be limited to tuning options. It uses wasted spark vs coil on plug ignition as well.

I dont really want fully tq at 2800rpm just full boost sorry for the confusion. With a redline of 8250rpm having full tq at the rpm wouldnt be very balanced.
I could have sworn tomei made cams for the ver 6 sti but they dont so instead ill be going with the kelford 199-B Camshaft 256/264 Duration, 9.35mm Lift. High torque camshafts to suit near stock engines to hopefully bump up the tq a little more. Ok now with swapping a jdm gc engine and trans into a usdm gd.... Do I run a jdm gc downpipe? gc or gd turbo induction hose? gc or gd exhaust manifold? Again thank you everyone for your help. Pete |

If you are being rushed, you will make mistakes and waste money. Either full ass it or no ass it....half ass is not an option. You need to find a good tuner first and ask for their advice as you are shotgunning ideas apropos of nothing based on nothing. I took 6 months to plan my last turbo upgrade and am 6 + months into planning my current build....time and planning is what separates the people with 6 digit odometer readings and those who appear and we never hear about again after 2 months. If you don't have a good tuner or someone with a sound idea of how to help, send me a PM with a pic of a hot babe and I can set you up.

unabomber- when I said I was being rushed I was talking about the writing of that post, not the build. right now im trying to decide if I want to go balls out or not, I dont do things half assed. If I decide to go through with this thats 10k minimum ill end up spending on parts, that seems to be my magic number with my cars both my s2000 and my datsun 510 are at or near that number. The only thing I need a tuner for is dyno tuning. I was a professional technician for the last 8 years its what I went to school for but now ive upgraded and work on private jets which pays a bit better. There will be not shortage of research and planning, this will be if I decide to give it the green light will prob be a 2 year build. I do understand the concern, im not going to be one of those people who hacks a car together and "ruins" another impreza.

what area do you live in? someone can recommend you a good tuner. i have the v7 ej207 and i love it. i have a fxt trans "its a 4.44 fd" and i love it also. i would stay with the v8 if you want fast spool sinse it is twin scroll and look into just buying the ra trans or possibly the fxt trans swap i spent just over 1k on my trans swap. i think i have the perfect setup for dd and its fast to. if you live anywhere around me i would be willing to give you a ride.

even better than finding a tuner is finding a machine shop that is capable of doing what you want.
