Default 2022/2023 Honda Civic Type R Thread

Quote:
Just about when Honda is starting the market launch of the facelifted 2020 model, our spies caught the Japanese carmaker testing the next-generation Civic Type R for the first time, which could arrive either as a 2022MY or 2023MY in North America.

The next Honda Civic Type R test car is unsurprisingly quite heavily camouflaged, featuring not only a full-body wrap but fake bumps in key areas in a bid to further hide its styling cues.

However features such as the headlights and taillights appear to be complete, giving us a better idea of what to expect from the popular hot hatch.

One of the biggest criticisms on the current Civic Type R is about its overly aggressive looks, with some saying that it’s almost too much and others being turned off by the number of fake vents and the whole “boy-racer” image it projects.

Although it’s too soon for a solid conclusion, the pictured test car appears to adopt a softer approach, at least underneath all that tape. We can’t tell for sure if the covered bumpers are close to the final design but we do like what we see. The next Honda Civic Type R is also keeping the wider fenders, which help it house the bigger tire/wheel package, as well as the characteristic rear wing.

The camouflaged 2022/2023 Honda Civic Type R was also fitted with a temporary single exhaust tip, portraying the early nature of the test car. Another big change on the rear of the Japanese hot hatch is the lights; Honda will go with a full-width LED setup this time, giving the 11th-generation Civic and the Civic Type R a more modern and less controversial rear end this time around.

Our spies were able to catch a glimpse of the interior too, which shows a new steering wheel and a tacked-on touchscreen display for the infotainment display. The instrument cluster is also expected to be new and fully digital, offering more customization options than before.

As for the powertrain, there isn’t much information apart from older reports suggesting that the hot Honda will go down the electrification route since the Japanese carmaker is planning to electrify its entire range by 2025.

As such, the 2022 / 2023 Civic Type R is expected to continue using a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, only here it will work in conjunction with two electric motors powering the rear wheels for a speculated 400 HP. Honda is even expected to use the torque-vectoring technology from the NSX in the next Civic Type R, which should make it exceptionally fast across the ground.

Honda is going to reveal the next-generation Civic in late 2021, with the hot Type R model to follow in early 2022.

Will it be ugly and will it have impractically huge wheels that a lot of dealers can't even change the tire on?

Honda engineers can certainly make a close approximation of a purse with a sow's ear.

What we really want is the mini s2000 k-car they've been selling in Japan.

Sounds like awd huh? We’ll see. No manual no sale for me, and I’d be reserved about it until full details are known. Electric battery = weight.

Yeah, definitely needs MT on these cars. I don't care how great AT is on some cars, they just don't substitute the fun driving dynamics of MT.

I can't believe people can't understand the exhaust setup, this is a mule and the camo runs all the way down to the exhaust.

All they care about is collecting data, as the mule(s) progress we'll see more and more refinements. Clearly, obviously, they're not going to release a CTR with an exhaust that looks like it's borderline zip tied and or barely hanging on.

FFS.

I'm very skeptical on the electric motors, think it'll be FWD, 2.0L turbo again.

^ Could be plausible. I feel like they need to give the CTR more and bump up the Si ... I kind of feel like the Si moniker is iconic for civic too, but it got left behind and blurs into the lesser models. If the CTR gets more in whatever way, the Si has room to move into GTI, Veloster N territory.

Yeah, another 5 years of the 1.5T in the Si is not gonna be well received.

Interestingly, I've seen a comparison between those cars and the Si won.

It appears to be made for connection to emissions equipment.

If they upgraded the clutch capacity, I think they could make more power from the 1.5L. Keep in mind, it's already underrated from the factory. I'd also be a fan of the Accord 2.0 being dropped in, but with emissions and fuel economy standards, I could see the 1.5L carrying on.

The Si beats the GTI and Veloster N in some comparisons due to the overall package, but it's a lot slower than those cars, in fact it's not really any faster than my 6MT Sport. I don't know that they can get much more reliable power out of the 1.5T, which already disappointed a lot of Si fans 4 years ago.

But I agree, and the 2.0T is gonna drive up the price considerably. I just hope they make a hatch Si next time.

Maybe they just haven't made the exhaust yet?

There doesn't appear to be any rear diff or electric motors in the rear from pics I've seen. And since the hood is so different I don't think this is a current gen Type R in Acura form either. Looks like next gen Type R is front drive again. I personally wouldn't mess with success if I were Honda. But make an Acura version with AWD.

That 1.5T may suffice in a regular civic but it's a dog when acting as a performance engine. I drove an Si last year and the car itself drove surprisingly good but the engine felt totally out of place as there's a brief, mid range surge of power but it runs out of steam fast just like it does with a BRZ and has no character. I would hope next gen they put in a detuned version of the 2.0T engine.

Yeah, it's been a few years, but I remember feeling the Si drop off at the top end. I don't know if I'd compare it to the torque-dip having BRZ though.

The Si's max torque, with stock ECU tuning, occurs as soon as max boost is achieved and only goes down from there. Hondata's +6 ECU tune would be mandatory, for me, as it carries peak torque out to about 4500RPM. I've heard good things about larger turbos on these cars, but at that point, why not just get the Type R and be done with it?

so just a question when they account for HP on electric Motors, they add up what each of hte motors puts out right, so the gas engine puts out 300 and the 2 electric motors puts out 50 each to make 400? is that right?

Maybe that's how the magazines are doing it but that's not how the power is officially calculated on the NSX, so Honda doesn't do it that way.

Yes, that is generally how the total combined output is calculated; the peak output of each independent device (ICE, electric, wind, lol) added together to reach the total.

Rumor is that this is the new Integra Type-R (ILX replacement).
