Honda Civic Type R Is Now More Expensive Than Ever

It's just the latest in a long line of gradual price bumps for Honda's hottest Civic model.

Sad news for fans of attainable performance cars: the Honda Civic Type R - Honda's hottest, most high-performance compact car - is getting a price increase as it slides into 2021.

The base MSRP of the Civic R has nudged upward by $400, at the same time that Honda has increased its destination fee by $40 for cars, and $55 for trucks and crossovers, spelling out a total price increase of $440 compared to the 2020 model year.

That may not seem like a whole lot for a car that costs nearly $40k in the US already, but it's better than half of an entire extra monthly payment, depending on how long a given customer might be financing for. It's also far from the only price increase that the Civic R has had since its introduction.

While year-to-year price adjustments are by no means unusual in the automotive industry, it's not clear you're actually getting any more for your money. The 2021 Honda Civic Type R soldiers on with the same 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, good for 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and six-speed manual as it's always had.

But the Type R isn't the only Civic getting a price increase heading into 2021; most of the lineup is nudging upward by $200 to $300. Interestingly, the top-of-the-line Limited Edition Type R is exempted from the $400 base price increase. Only the Type R Touring is getting a bump.

The Honda Civic Type R was already one of the most expensive cars in its segment, starting some $5k higher than the Hyundai Veloster N, and nearly $10k higher than the Volkswagen Golf GTI. When it was sold new, the 250-hp Ford Focus ST started well over $10k lower than the Type R, although it shipped with loads more oversteer and significantly less performance.

With an all-new eleventh-generation Honda Civic on the way for the 2022 model year, a brand new version of the Civic Type R is expected to follow, although it might not be ready until 2023 or later. Rumors of a hybrid powertrain abound, which could conceivably push the base price well beyond the $40k mark.

Well it started out as a $35k car in 2017 and it's pretty rare to see a vehicle incrementally increased this much in price year over year. There are enough fanboys to keep buying them despite the MSRP increases but every time it's price goes up it's value gets worse as it's a lot of money for a FWD car even if it's a very good one. A lot of people end up buying these due to the hype and selling them fairly quickly because FWD is still FWD and no amount of chassis tuning can change that.

Don't think Honda will spend the money to put a minautre/watered down NSX hybrid solution in the rear of the Type R. That would make too much sense. They are happy to spend millions on the NSX and it's hybrid drivertrain only to see 1 NSX per year. Bringing that technology to the Civic platform would help them recover the R&D costs, that's too much of a simple solution for the bean counters of Honda to understand.

There is hope that the new smaller car in the Acura lineup will get AWD to compete with the likes of the Audi A3/A4 BMW 2/3xi variants.

the msrp is sort of irrelevant. you can buy the ctr for msrp and sell it a year later and only lose a little in depreciation. 99% of the cars out there have a much higher depreciation rate.

I think this is the first time I have ever seen someone say MSRP is irrelevant. Whether you keep it for a month or 10 years the MSRP is extremely relevant as you need to have the cash or financing to purchase said vehicle.

i'm not really sure what we're even discussing as i just wanted to point out that these cars depreciate very little.

these cars aren't expensive. it's in line with the cost of an avg new car being sold. you could argue that it's not as functional as a mainstream SUV, but that just depends on the buyer's goal.

msrp is only one way to look at the cost of the vehicle. need to factor in total cost of ownership, which a big piece of that is the depreciation schedule.

you could argue teslas are overpriced for what they are. most of that cost is the battery. people still buy them. what are we trying to argue here?

At this point, FWD limitations are well known and understood.
Some people know how to drive and some don't; regardless of drivetrain layout.
The only thing working against the CTR, IMO, is not really its MSRP or its FWD layout: it's ADM.
It's so bad around here than *used* CTRs are selling at MSRP and above.
That's what pushed me to get a 2019 Golf R for the time being.
But, make no mistake, I wanted to buy a CTR. Very badly.
But, there's no way I'd shell out $50K for a CTR before tax (nearly $55K OTD).

that's just supply/demand. you could have paid $1k to have one shipped from Iowa or something.

in general, enthusiast car ownership isn't very long. people get bored and move on. there are hundreds of other reasons. it's not necessarily because people just realized the fwd limitations.

Yeah, you're right, I could have worked with an out-of-state dealer to get it shipped over here.
I admit I didn't research out-of-state dealers too hard on this one. The Golf R was next on my short list; so I moved on.
Interestingly, the 2021 Veloster N was also on that list, but it's in even shorter supply than the CTR.

Type R continues to sell at MSRP and above near the end of it's life, so hard to argue it's overpriced.

I don't think the turnover is any higher than any other car either, unless someone has proof of that. The extremely high resale would certainly make it tempting when it's a couple years old and the new car excitement has worn off.

Sold my 2017 WRX today and bought a CTR.

As people have said, even the 'normal' (not Limited Edition) cars are selling for MSRP+.

And they really are selling. I had an appointment at 1:30 Sunday to look at one at a local dealer. About noon, they called me to say it just sold. Same thing happened on a Limited Edition. That sold for $55K about an hour after I talked to the salesman.

Mine is Blue Boost in color. The dealer (75 miles from home) had two, that one and a white one. I thought I'd like the white better, but looking at them side-by-side I decided on the blue.

I liked the WRX, but this should be fun, too.

Plecain - Congrats. That blue they offer on the TypeR looks real good. That would've been my color choice too had they came with SH-AWD..

White is a classic CTR color, but the light blue was the better choice IMO.

My neighbor has a boost blue one and damn is that a sharp looking car. Nice choice.

Awesome, congrats! I did buy a 2020 Si sedan last July after all, love it.

Of course a month ago my wife saw a Boost Blue Type R and said I should have bought that.

IMO Boost Blue is the best color for these cars. It works with the black plastic better than the other colors. Championship White is okay but it's so played out.

Seems like cool cars are suffering similar fates to GPUs currently. What I don't get is.. I thought everyone was poor and doing horribly, losing their jobs and desperate for dat government money how are there so many people with so much disposable income? Or is it really that there are just *THAT* few of these things such that even the incredibly small number of diehard fans are willing to jump higher to get what they want?

What you don't get is that people WITH money haven't been able to spend it on expensive travel and other things. Plus folks working from home are saving big money on commute/etc. expenses. The collector car market skyrocketed last year because the rich just sat home browsing car auctions buying stuff.

The poor and lower class are just as screwed as before if not worse considering used cars and the housing market both skyrocketed.

Yeah I like the new blue. I feel bad that I couldn't get this nice color back when I bought.
