Default 2008 STi - Rotate All The Things

What's up guys? I am new to the STi scene but not new to modding cars or driving Subarus by any means. A little bit of history, I owned a 2005 WRX back in 2007 but it didn't last long as it was totaled after less than 6 months and I also owned a 2016 Impreza hatch for a year that is now my wife's daily driver. Aside from those I have owned 2x Acura RSX-S(1 Turbo, 1 All motor), a 99 Mustang GT(full bolt ons), a Neon SRT-4(450whp), a Yamaha R6(full bolt ons), and my current toy car, a 1999 Corvette(single turbo, meth injection, roll cage, 950 whp).

I bought the STi(57K miles) as a daily when my wife took over my 2016 Impreza and it came with what is essentially all the Stage 2 bolt ons and a Surgeline Protune making 310/345, according to the previous/original owner.

Updated Parts List:

BACK TO STOCK

I didn't get a chance to take any pics before a tractor trailer backed into me at a redlight in my own office complex. At that point I decided I would do the facelift since I prefer the 2011-2014 look anyways.

Finally found some time to lift the rear and pop the subframe inserts in and I must say that it is amazing how much of a difference bushings/bushing inserts make to this car. Since purchasing the car I've added the Kartboy shifter bushings, Whiteline diff inserts and subframe inserts and the car feels much more solid. I can feel the road better and the car inspires much more confidence when throwing it around corners. Now I would like to try to steering rack bushings and control arm bushings to finish out the bushings in the suspension.

Thanks Ian. I'm ordering my adjustable FPR and Cobb fuel pressure sensor today so that I can get it on the dyno in the next month and then I'll be going to lay down a baseline before I install the header and get tuned. Still not sure if I am going to go through Cleo or JR @ IAG.

Wasn't able to get a baseline put down before installing the header but I will still post results of the dyno tune.

I got the MAPerformance EL header, Mach V header heatshield and Radium Auto FPR w/ Cobb fuel pressure sensor installed last night. I ended up making the fuel feed hose out of the Redhorse Performance lines and fittings I had laying around since the fittings that came in the Radium kit would not stop leaking. The header and heatshield went on very easily and the fitment was perfect.

Here are my thoughts on all of the parts I just installed thus far:

MAPerformance Header - Very easy install, I had absolutely no fitment issues. The header did eliminate about 90% of the boxer rumble but I don't mind because it also seems quieter at idle and cruising which was one of the secondary goals when I bought the header. One note, if you are waiting to do an oil pick up install, do it before you install a MAPerformance header as you will have to remove the header to remove the oil pan anyways. I have not been tuned yet so I haven't gone WOT but I have noticed a bit more lag but nothing that I would say is a night and day difference.

Radium FPR - Install was very easy except for getting the 5/16 fuel line disconnect tool inside the OEM fuel line connectors. The kit was sold as the STI stumble fix but it came with the wrong orifice installed, no big deal as they include all 3 orifice so swapping over was easy. Fuel pressure is stable and I have not witnessed and dips or spikes. Also, I did have a noticeable stumble around 3100 rpm which is no longer there. Overall, I'd say it was a successful install.

Mach V Heatshield - Not much to say here. High quality piece and bolted right in place of the old plastic heatshield after it fell apart in my hands. Looks like it will do it's job well.

I have to say... after doing the turbo inlet and fuel injectors on this thing I am much more fond of working on my Corvette. That said, I made a bit more progress this weekend(although it was not painless).

I have a tune with Cleo @ IAG on 1/17/18 so I spent my weekend installing the FIC1000 injectors which really werent all that bad. I did not have to remove the drivers TGV motor to remove the GBOD and I did not reinstall the GBOD after finishing everything up. The passenger side wasn't so bad but I did have to disconnect the passenger TGV motor and AVCS banjo bolt to remove the 12mm fuel line retaining bolt on the front of the head but other than that it went together easily.

While I was removing the AIR pump the electrical connector on the pump itself snapped off so I decided to do an AIR pump delete while I was in there. I also figured that if I was going to pull the intake manifold to remove the solenoids than I better buy a turbo inlet and knock that out at the same time. Removing the bolts under the intake manifold proved to be the only real PITA part of the inlet install. The biggest issue I had through this entire process was one of my air pump pipe bolts broke off in the back of the passenger head so I had to get creative with my air pump block off but here are some pics.

Engine bay all buttoned up after the FIC1000, Mishimoto Turbo Inlet and Mach V Air pump delete plates.

Little close up of the Mishimoto Inlet. Be warned, the barb provided by Mishimoto for the EBCS is too large and you will need to use 3/8" hose to slip over that barb. I wrapped the barb on the EBCS with electrical tape until it was large enough for the hose to barely slip over and then it was zip tied on both ends. Aside from that the fitment is good and the silicone looks nice and thick.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/F6...=w1319-h989-no

Since the passenger side GBOD supports the TMIC brace and the coolant reservoir I did not want to completely remove it but I did not want to reinstall the front bolt in case I have to get back under there anytime soon. I cut it in half and then spent some time on the belt sander smoothing out the cut edge.

Mach V Air Pump delete plate installed on drivers side port.

Here you can see the broken bolt in the upper right threaded hole and the large M10x1.0 bolt that I used to seal the air pump hole after drilling and tapping with lots of Dielectric grease to catch any metal shavings.

And here are a couple more pics of the Radium FPR setup since I haven't seen much about it on the forums or facebook.

Had a good time at IAG Performance yesterday while Cleo worked his magic. Final numbers ended up at 328whp/352wtq on their Dynojet.

Took a couple quick shots because I was early to a "work dinner" and the lighting in the garage was kinda neat. Since the last ones I've added an ABS "STi style" front lip, IAG clutch reservoir cap, IAG windshield reservoir cap, Carbotech AX6 pads for autocross. I also finally ordered an AEM 320lph fuel pump for peace of mind.

I live 30 minutes from them and nobody else makes colored billet caps to replace those garbage yellow plastic ones. Move along if you don’t like it.

Thanks buddy. It's not like I even have a ton of IAG stuff.... Just the AOS, a couple of caps and I got tuned there...

That's not to say I didn't have a good experience with them because I did but it is quite a stretch to call me a "fan boi."

Edit: just noticed his profile says he has an IAG built STi lol

Finally got around to giving the STi a nice wash and wax. While I was at it I installed the black R205 fender badges. I still have the RCE black springs on in these photos but the Feal 441 should be here today and installed tomorrow.

Long time no update. I've updated the original post with the current mod list. These pictures show everything on the list except the ETS FMIC, GS EBCS and IAG fuel rails. Since my last post I've done 4 AutoX events and I've take 5th, DNF(broken end link), 1st and 3rd. The 1st and 3rd were against a C6Z06 and a Camaro ZL1 so I'm very happy with those results. I may have an even bigger update coming soon as I was down quite a bit on oil during the most recent change and I've been noticing a bit of smoke out the tail pipes on start up so I'm hoping it's the turbo but it may be the infamous ringlands. I'l be doing a compression and leakdown prior to installing the FMIC and EBCS to diagnose the oil loss.

Sorry for bad quality pics but I'm no photographer and these were just taken on my way into dinner.

Here's a little sneak preview of what's coming up next...

Picked up a used ETS 3" FMIC kit with stainless piping on ebay and immediately got the piping powder coated wrinkle red. Also, grabbed a used Blouch 20G XTR with 10cm turbine housing and 3" inlet that has zero shaft play and spins very smooth. While I'm at it I bought IAG fuel rails, Redhorse 205 lines and fittings, Grimmspeed EBCS, APS 3" inlet and TGV deletes to install at the same time. I decided to hold off on the flex fuel kit until next year since I've already spent enough on this car for this year. Retune with updated numbers should be coming early September.

I think your car can take the new STI's quicker steering rack as well. I forget the ratio for the 08 STIs, but the new ones are at 13.3::1, and still hydraulic, so it should be more or less a direct swap.

After the BRZ came out, Subaru really tightened things up with the WRX and STI suspensions.

That is in my plans for next year. Ill be doing the VA steering rack, whiteline rack bushings, cusco rack brace and a bump steer kit all around the same time. I'll probably be due to have my coilovers rebuilt around the same time so I'll be getting the road race valving and much higher rate springs.

So this is definitely an unexpected and expensive update but I'd rather post this than not post at all.

I installed the 20G XTR, IAG fuel rails, parallel fuel lines, Torque Solution TGV deletes, 8mm phenolic spaces, GDT Cylinder 4 cooling mod, Perrin 3" inlet, custom 3" intake and went in for my speed density tune. Made it through 6 pulls before the motor shut down when letting off at the top of pull # 6. Tried to fire it back up and guess what?***8230; spun rod bearing.

Before I get into what you're all waiting to hear I have some pics from the process but nothing great that I'll share first.

20G XTR vs VF48

OEM TGVs vs Torque Solution TGV Deletes and IAG rails

Pile of Parts getting ready to install

Turbo and AVCS Oil Lines

Bracket I made for the FPR and oil pressure sender

I've just ordered an IAG Stage 2 shortblock, Killer B Ultimate Oil Pan, ARP Head Studs, OEM oil cooler, OEM gaskets and a Dom 1.5 XTR. Mach V is doing all of the work, because I just don't have the time and space to be doing this for my daily while my garage space is still taken up by my full time race car, and they believe they should be able to knock it out in a few weeks(they had one Stg 2 block in stock) and get me back on the dyno in time to make my last event of the season and hopefully make the podium. I also had a professional photo shoot scheduled but that is on hold now as well until I can get the car back but atleast I will have quality photos to share with you all once I do get it back.

Did you decide to install the control arm bushings and steering rack bushings?

I've owned my '08 for about a year and a half and the stumble is annoying. Does this FPR really eliminate it? Is it a plug and play deal or do you have to adjust for the new FPR tuning-wise to fix the stumble?

I haven't done the control arm and rack bushings yet but I may have Mach V toss the rack bushings in while the motor is out.

It is highly recommended to get a tune after replacing the FPR but I drove for a bit without a tune with no negative results. After my tune it completely got rid of the stumble on my car. If you are going to run it without a tune(which I don't recommend for an extended period of time) just make sure you get the base fuel pressure set exactly where it should be.
