Need Advice on New Helmet
In preparation for some SCCA races this July in the "Texas Gran Prix" at Texas Motor Speedway, I need to buy a new helmet for the SA2000 rating. I am presently using a wonderful Arai helmet with M95 rating, it fits and feels great, but now I have to "bite the bullet" and buy my next helmet. Everything else I have done from a safety perspective has been "top of the line" in approach. The two helmets that seem to be the top contenders are the Arai GP-5 and the BELL Dominator. Do you have any thoughts to share on either or both of these helmets? Are there any others you would recommend?

I like my Bell M2. Fit is great, and has great visibility with the large eyeport. Doesnt break the bank at $300 either.

GoodFinder,
I use a Bell Dominator helmet and I really like it. However, I bought it because high speed open wheel cars were lifting my other helmet off my head and I needed something that would be more stable in the airstream. If you are going to be in closed cockpit cars (or at least have a windshield) there's no reason to go with an expensive aero helmet. I used the Bell M3 for many years and liked it a lot also. It's much cheaper than the Dominator. Gary Sheehan Motor Racing www.teamSMR.com |

Thanks for the advice.
Especially the aspect of only spending money where it makes sense to spend the money! GoodFinder |

I really like the Bell Sport II as well, and use one myself. If I had to do it again, I might get the M2 model since it has a larger eye port.... http://www.soloracer.com/helmets.html

Bell has a new version of the M2 helmet, called the M2pro. Same big eyeport as the M2, but made of Carbon fiber instead of fiberglass, so it is a couple of pounds lighter, but it's about $150 more than a glass M2.

Thanks again everybody for the helmet advice. I've tried on several different brands and types, and I keep coming back to the Arai fitting my particular head the best. Unfortunately, the Arai also seems to be one of the most expensive helmets out there! So, alas, I "bit the bullet" and ordered an Arai GP-5 this morning. I know I'll love the helmet, and perhaps "over time" the pain of the expense will go away. Now I just gotta get in gear and sell my current Arai RX-7RR4 helmet!
Cheers, GoodFinder |
