Default OT IT gurus - need your help

So I'm simply trying to share a folder in XP on the network at work and people are unable to access it. I don't want to go to IT because they are not confidence-inspiring and will probably just re-image my machine costing me weeks to reinstall all the crap I have and need.

I believe it's some kind of user-based security issue because I can see folders on my machine from another machine when logged on as myself but whenever anybody else tries tehy get basically "can't find" machine error.

I've done the following:
1) tried using ip address instead of machine name
2) checked/double-checked/triple-checked file sharing is enabled in network connections
3) changed NetBIOS setting to enabled (originally it was "auto")
4) verified no firewalls running
5) I've also looked through Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy and changed a few things but am not sure about the stuff in there...

still no go...

anybody have any ideas?

have you tried mapping the drive with user credentials from your box

like

windows key + e to bring up the explorer

tools -> map network drive

folder: \\ipaddress\share

then click on "different user name"

and then for the user put

hostnameofyourmachine\user and then the password you use

I want to share the folder with other users at work though.. I don't want ot have to give everybody my username password to access a shared folder on my machine. The way its supposed to work (which is how it works on everybody elses machien) is that if you share a folder anybody in the network domain should be able to access it. I've got some tweaked setting somewhere preventing access I think...

right I understand what you want to do

but this is an alternative, and whats so bad about creating a user account specifically for that folder....

But, you probally just need administrator rights to share a folder.
i have no faith in our IT people unfortunately - this guy remote desktop'd to my machine and hit "Refresh" in windows explorer like 12 times in a row when I called in a ticket for the company network drives not auto-mapping...

I have seen co-workers share a directory and have accessed said directories with no administrator assistance so that's not it...

goto My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options - View tab -> scroll down to almost the last set of options.. one should be "Use Simple File Sharing". if it's enabled, uncheck it.. if its no checked, enable it. try it

It was checked - I unchecked and tried again and got the same thing...

Here is some additional info though:

My computer -> manage -> event viewer -> security is logging "Failure Audits" for these attempts.. here's what the description shows:
Reason: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this machine
User Name: coworker
Domain: CompanyDomain
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: Kerberos
Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Workstation Name: -

Sounds to me like you didn't bother to give them rights in the security tab to access the share you created. Also check the share permissions and make sure it is set as well (usually just set it to everyone with change access then lock it down on an NTFS level).

And if you were at my company circumventing my IT security efforts, you would be using an abacus and a steno pad by the end of the day.

I would be fearful if they want to reimage your computer based on a permissions problem...

Yikes

No it's not that... it's on the user-access to the machine level. The share permissions on the folder are fine.

Then check your local security policy if you have access to. They may have set it to where only you and administrators have "access this computer from the network", turned on.

Yup that was it... It's funny too because my boss sent me a screenshot of his local security/user right assignment page and his was set to "Administrators" like mine so I assumed that wasn't it... I guess he probably can't share folders with others either. The network admins/IT guys I talked to unofficially were surprised it wasn't working - now I'm wondering if that's the default setting and most people probably can't share - they just don't know it or are sharing with themselves (through the same account). I'll have to look into that.

Thanks!

The "default" for access this computer from the network is Everyone, Administrators, Domain Users, and a few others. So they are changing it somewhere, either through Group Policy or a forced security policy locally.
