Default '05 2.5i won't start / roll and then start??

Hey everyone I need some advice..

My 2005 2.5i has been acting up the past few days, It will start great and then every once in a while it will act like the battery is low dash light come on and then the starter won't engage. if I put it in 5th gear and push it forward just a bit to turn the engine over it will then start. I thought it may be a relay in the starter but its not being turned when I push it forward because its not engaged. the battery is charged and the connections are clean. is there a relay/sensor anywhere else I'm over looking?

any advice would be great. thanks

David

Sorry guys.

2005 2.5 RS 5 spd 33K miles

Battery is in good shape.. I thought it was a battery issue at firs too. acts just like the battery is low. but after putting it in 5th gear and rolling it forward it will start. it acts like there's a dead spot somewhere. or a neutral safety switch not working.

I was hoping it had been talked about on here from someone else but a search turned up nothing.

Any Idea's?

This sounds difficult to diagnose, but I'd look at the neutral safety switch, or clutch switch.

When it doesn't start, does it not do ANYTHING? Does the starter solenoid click? Does the starter try to turn but sound like it's jammed/stuck? Are you trying to start it in gear or in neutral?

Why would it be the neutral safety switch? The ECU shouldn't use it for anything. All the neutral safety switch does it let ECU know if the car is in gear or not. One a five speed the car will start in or out of gear. If you think its the clutch switch just unplug it from the pedal and put a jumper on it to connect the two pins. If it works then replace the clutch switch if not look for something else.

What does it do when it doesn't start? Does it make some sort of noise? It sounds a lot like the start id getting jammed for some reason.

I think I'll run a jumper on the clutch sensor.. It acts like the clutch is not pushed in but after I roll it forward in gear "5th" it starts..

when it doesn't start. it doesn't do anything.. the starter does not engage.

there is no click from any relays, Just acts like the clutch isn't pressed.

Having to push the car and turn the engine over manually is a mystery this makes no sense.

I did a 5MT swap into my originally automatic car, so sorry if I provided bad info. I had thought that some cars were set up so that the vehicle had to be in neutral for it to start. When I wired mine up I could have it set up either way. I actually never hooked up my neutral safety switch and just used the clutch switch for the starter relay.

OP, can you verify that the car acts the same (same dash lights, etc.) if the clutch is NOT depressed? I seem to remember mine having weird lights on the dash if I turned the ignition to start without having the clutch in, and doing absolutely nothing as far as engaging the starter solenoid.

Let us know what the results are from bypassing the clutch switch.

*Update* Yesterday Morning I planned on running a jumper wire in the plug that goes to the switch on the clutch pedal. I looked up under the dash and noticed there are two sensors that work with the clutch pedal. the first one is easy to get to and can't be the switch that tells the ECU the clutch is pressed. it engages if you barely touch the pedal.
The second one is hard to see but its above the first switch and is pressed when the clutch pedal is completely engaged. Naturally this has to be the main clutch safety switch. So I bent the metal tab that pushes against this sensor thinking it may need to be pushing a bit further to work right. Started the car and all was well, through out the day I still parked so I could roll out if needed. 4 starts latter all was good and then after I was finished working a few hours later it did it again "nothing just dead". So Now I know the sensor is being pressed in when i push the clutch and now today I'll run the jumper. The only thing I can think of is the this sensor or the ignition has a short.

When I turn the key to engage the starter the lights go out on the dash so I know the Ignition is working. this is what is crazy!

The neutral switch is in the transmission.

The clutch switch is on the pedal box.

I believe that first switch is wired to the cruise control to tell it to 'cancel' if the clutch is depressed at all.

The second one is the correct clutch swith, that is wired to either the starter interlock or the ECU.

*Update* I bypassed the safety switch on the clutch pedal and so far so good. I only started the car 6-7 times today but it was without a glitch

I'll update in the next or so.
