Default Cobb 09 WRX Stage 1 Results

Just finished tuning our first 09 WRX, we are very pleased and impressed with the results! I think we will be seeing a lot of trade-in's in the near future... I'll let the graph speak for itself and have Mr. Bailey chime in a bit later This is all done on our in house Mustang Dyno.

Mods:
stock + SPT Catback
230 whp
238 wtq

Stage 1:
AccessPort stage 1 Tune
268 whp
290 wtq

We just finished some initial testing with a new 2009 wrx. The results indicate that this car is a whole new beast and is indeed MUCH more capable that the 2008 version of this car.

The first major fact to relay regarding this car is that the turbo is bigger. The 2008 car was left nearly impotent with a tiny little turbo that was done before the fun started. Like many fans of turbo cars I think that bigger is better and in this case the choice for the new 2009 is perfect. In almost every regard this car performs as though the turbo is similar to an STi.

Now onto the specific results of our testing:

Baseline runs - Stock car with an SPT cat back exhaust
- Air Fuel Ratio: Note that the stock car stays near 14:1 at full boost until nearly 4000 RPM. This is a risky tuning strategy that best meets the standards of increasingly stringent emissions tests but by all rational standards has a negative impact on torque, responsiveness, and engine longevity. This "lean under full boost" tuning strategy has become the standard for all turbo Subaru's.
- Boost: The stock calibration is a nearly flat boost curve of 14 PSI tapering to 12 PSI. This is a very flat boost curve in contrast to the 2008 car which peaks and tapers heavily.

Stage 1 testing - Stock car with SPT cat back exhaust and Cobb AccessPORT beta calibration

- Air fuel ratio: Lean under full boost is not acceptable. For this beta calibration I first changed the open to closed loop delays and switch points to allow appropriately rich Air to Fuel ratio's as boost comes on. This richer AF ratio allows more consistent ignition timing. Under these conditions power and torque abound. In fact, I was able to make considerably more power and torque under these conditions with stock boost levels.
- Boost: With the fuel and timing strategies in place I began to raise the boost. After some trial and error I settled on a peak boost of 16.5 psi tapering down to 13 psi. The torque and power gains are impressive and in fact I was able to make MORE power and torque with slightly higher boost.

The next series of testing will be conducted after we install a Cobb Tuning downpipe. Overall I am absolutely impressed with this car and the performance is more STi than any prior WRX. Since the 09 wrx can be had for 24K, it represents a huge performance bargain. I'd be willing to bet the stage 2 tune will yield results VERY similar to a stage 2 STi.

Best regards
Tim Bailey

As an aside its worth noting this turbo might just be the best upgrade option available for all you 2008 wrx and legacy owners.

sorry hard to read. Does that say 269 whp? with only spt catback + Tune? That's very impressive!

This was tuned by Tim Bailey. Added numbers in original post for those having a hard time making out the #'s

Initial driving impressions:
The top end on stage 1 is phenomenal! This easily feels like a stage 2 WRX from the previous years.

I didn't get a chance to drive the car with the stock suspension, it's running Cobb springs right now but the ride is very smooth and refined. Definitely daily driving friendly and suitable for spirited drives.

Braking is responsive and more than enough for the stage 1 setup, time will tell if pads would be recommended on a stage 2 setup.

Stage 2 I would guess another 20hp/tq added. Impressive! Stage 2 + meth would be a monster -- 11's?

Brandon, can you throw up an '08 WRX sheet or even an '08 STi dyno graph for comparison on your dyno??

Would help to see how well this turbo actually performs.

Wow looks great. Seems like some high numbers for a mustang, but other than that 09 WRX's seem great.

Brandon or I will put up some comparisons from 08 WRXs and an STi or two.

I agree, this will be a great way to see the relative differences

Tim, did you make any timing changes when you tuned it or did you just tune for fuel and boost targets?

Wow the 09's look to be quite promising. Does anyone know specs of this new, larger turbo? Is it still a mitsubishi turbo or is the WRX also equipped with an IHI VF series of sort?

I assume the size is right between the old TD04 and the STI's VF-39,43,48...

Can you post up a graph of the stage 1 2009 WRX versus a stage 1 LGT? Us LGT owners have been waiting to see if the VF52 is a nice upgrade over the VF40/46.

Also, what size injectors and fuel pump does the 09 WRX use comapared to an 05 LGT?

This might eat into Subaru's STi sales a bit. Good for us Bad for them.

That is until they bump the STi's power

Ok so I have an 09 WRX, and an SPT exhaust. So could I buy one of those $160 Tactrix cable setups and go down to my local tuner then? Forgive my ubernoobness.

Thanks.

Also, would it be safe to assume the car would be capable of a high 12 second E/T when we start seeing Stage II setups?

when does the accessport come out for the 09 wrx?? I told myself when I bought the car that I wouldn't mod until early to mid 2009, but with results like this ITS A MUST LOL. Those numbers are insane and can't wait to see stage 2.

any idea when the maps will be released? or do they require more tunes before they decide what will work for a one size fits all map?

Or until they just get rid of the STI... You never know with the US market.

Unfortunately it "shouldn't" eat into STI sales at all, but too many buyers sit and focus on magazine times and HP figures, especially true in the US of A

Hell, all you have to do is read all of the 09 WRX is the greatest threads to figure that one out

I am HAPPY with the 09 WRX, great car for the money but put me in the STI any day. I had my 03 WRX for 6 years and that car really impressed me over the years, and since it was modified to near STI power I did not notice much of a difference there going from 03wrx to the 08sti. I for one HOPE they bump the power and go direct injection for 2010. I have to decide if I want to trade in the 08 sti for the 10' or keep the STI and throw down on a 08/09 M3... Decisions... or a house I guess
