wtf.

Someone didnt measure right.
That's ours.

Well, not quite a ladder, but kids have to bring a chair in to use the microwave.

The door is about 5'3" (oldest kid finally doesn't fit under the door).

I'm 6'4", so I like having the extra space under it, especially since it looks into the family room. Funny part is the old couple who built the house (and who we bought from) were both really short.

I used random YouTube vids and drew my own up to fit my dimensions.

Then I built stairs that matched.

Once it’s warmer I’m going to refinish the door to match the grey.

Under pressure from my wife, I mostly finished my coat hanger shelf thingy. I still need to crown the top of it.

All plywood and pine. The beadboard is the vinyl type. The reclaimed wood is from a scrap pallet.
Nice!

too funny.

Has anyone tried plumbing their microwave exhaust to the outside? I'm pretty sure mine has the option to do this via. a knock out panel on the back of the microwave. I notice my microwave has a decent "suck" when I put it on high, the flame from the stove will actually be affected

I'm thinking it might not take too much work (famous last words) to punch a hole thru the wall (laundry room on other side) and run it out thru the exterior on the other side. I could build a box around the ductwork and paint it up to look like it belongs.

Hmmm, my microwave is against an outside wall, this should have been done at construction.

I think it’s limited by the unit itself. My last house had a dedicated 6” duct to the attic from the micro and it’s still didn’t suck.

It may have even been 8”. I know it went from a narrow/wide rectangle to round.

Interesting, that does sound huge. Curious as to any guesses as to how tight that house was air leakage wise? Wondering if the fan was struggling trying to draw air from a tight house. Totoal guess here....

My Samsung microwave does suck pretty dang good.....just wished it blew all the odors and grease outside.....
I know my house leaks air as I have to resort to putting rope caulk on the windows in the Fall to keep Winter breezes out. Windows and a front door are my next priority this Spring.

It's just not enough airflow. For my folks we installed a dual-fan Vent-a-Hood which included swapping out the 6" duct for an 8". While it is better, still not perfect.

Those beams are just getting a sand and seal. You guys were 100% right. They add a little character and we love it.

What. The. ****. How long until all of NASIOC just stops working.

This is my thought. The blower on the microwave is about as useful as most bathroom exhaust fans.

Although ours is a little better after I fixed the ductwork. Original install had the duct attached to the cabinet enclosure above the microwave. But the microwave didn't seal to the cabinet, so it would just blow around the microwave and down the sides. And it leaked cold air down around the microwave in the winter. Microwave became an extra refrigerator in Jan-Feb.

Now this thread has me looking at microwaves again.

Looks like 300 cfm is standard for smaller ovens (1.6-1.7cf), 400 cfm for 2+cf. Our "cutout" is only 16" tall, 12" deep, and 30" wide. Even the 1.6cf ovens are 15" deep, so they'll stick out more than what we have now. The 2 cf models look to be 17-18" deep...no way I want the oven sticking out 6"...I'll continually bash my head on it. I need a smaller oven with a high power fan. The exhaust is through the roof, probably a 15-20' run (two story, 10' ceiling + attic)

They look awesome! Definitely just seal them and just let them age naturally.

I'm still wildly jealous of your Sub Zero/Wolf stuff, lol.

I'm gonna need to get some appliances myself shortly, and my lack of baller budget saddens me.

Thanks! The windows replaced the old attic vents and I think it adds a great little touch with the ambient lighting.

Thanks! All in time my man.

I wouldnt have sprung for it if I didnt get the 40% off. I somehow convinced myself that I would end up spending similar money on lower end stuff so why not live a little. That wasnt the case. Especially when you start adding wine fridges and microwave drawers. Oh well...

Has anyone ever managed their own large scale renovation and utilized a google form/excel sheet to track the work flow? Would love to see how other people have organized the info and time line.
I need to do a reno and I'll be doing most of the work, so having everything laid down on paper would help keep things organized and planned out in advance.

So we ended up with another GE.

This one works fine after 8 years, but is falling apart. There's plastic trim around the door chipping off. The coating under the carousel flaked off where the rollers run around. And its got rust on it in a few minor places, mostly due to steam coming off the range below. But functionally its fine.

Having said that, if it broke tomorrow, I'd probably get another GE in stainless.

Both have lasted 2x-3x the normal expected average lifespan for a microwave.

My three basic requirements for a microwave are that it has a "popcorn" button, a "potato" button, and an "Add 30 sec" button.
Thanks to this thread, I ended up buying a GE to replace our 26 year old Whirlpool (which is still working).

Says it's for a max 13" cabinet, so should be fine in the 12" depth cabinet.

check out 'Gantt bar chart' templates for excel. That's the most common method for construction scheduling.

These little guys are surprisingly pricey but they are pretty handy.

Kitchen is looking good. You sure that monster fridge is gonna fit in that enclosure??

Glad you came to your senses and just finished the existing beams without trying to finagle wrapping them. It's gonna look great once it's all done.

More new home things. Anyone hired/used an inspector through the build process of a new home? It's a DR Horton home in South Texas, so I know they're pushing them out as fast as they can. We're up in NJ until at least 2 weeks before estimated completion. My realtor (he helped us buy there back in 2013) said that he'll go by whenever to get pictures/video for us during the process. But obviously that's not that in depth, and I'm thinking about hiring someone to make sure it's being done properly. Not sure about frequency etc. Thoughts?
