That should be fun then, hope you guys have a good time. I'll be ~60 miles north (as the crow flies) around Elk Park/hwy 19E, or else I might take you up on swinging by.

I am in the market for a light 2 person tent like the ones you and Strider posted. At the moment, all I have is a crappy Coleman 4 person "car camping" tent. It probably weighs 8 or so pounds and has it's own large pack, so it's completely overkill for what I need. I've previously just made my own lean-to out of tarps when hiking, but had a bad night on top of a bald with something like 50 mph wind gusts.

Man, let me tell you, these things put just about every 2-person I've had to shame in the quality department. I use it car camping and BP trips. Well worth it if you are a serious camper. I got it on sale from the outfitter at harpers ferry before the latest price increase. Doubt I would pony up the msrp, now.

Hope you see some elk. Spotted this on the way up to Balsam mt campground in July.

Walked right by our car and gave us a sniff.

thats definitely no good!

i couldnt be happier with the firstlight. it weighs 2lbs 13oz, i have a western mountaineering 35 deg bag - oh, and WM is ****ing awesome. I will never own a bag by another manufacturer - period. but it weighs 17 oz. add the reactor stove at 17oz, and i'm all set (tent, bag, stove) at under 5lbs.

sleeping bags - i dont have time to write a review, but WM, hands down warmest lightest bag ever. from 20 below, to 40 deg, i have slept in their bags, and NEVER been cold

How much do you want to spend. It's a big market.

I did pick up a Cats Meow by The North Face which I think is rated right around 20*F and weighs 2lbs 10oz. I tend to fidget and wriggle a lot in my sleep, so the mummy'ness of it is something I have to adjust to, but I'm pretty happy with it overall.

I'd love to catch something on a sale, but I don't see myself spending more than $250-$300. I watch a ton of reviews from nutnfancy on youtube about what to look for in a tent and all sorts of other useful information. When it comes time to pony up, I'll just cruise around different sites to see what deals are out there.

I want:
-2 person
-Light weight (under 4lbs total)
-Vestibule
-large dome like O'sin's (I'm 6'3")

Found the BD firstlight on sale.

It's a good choice for your needs. You could also consider TarpTent (double rainbow).

Aw man, thanks for the link. You didn't need to look around, as I'm not in a position to buy one at the moment, but I do appreciate it.

The BD looks almost perfect, but I think I want a little more ventilation. The double rainbow just sounds a little phallic, so I might not even search for that one at work.

If you are looking for a easy backcountry experience. Head on up the Pretty Hollow Gap trail (at the end of the road) to #39 (fill out a permit at the ranger station). It's about 1.5 miles or so of mostly flat walking. I usually head here if the cataloochee CG is full.

Oh, well in that case... never mind.

I lost my upper half of NC map of the AT. Time to get raped at REI, not only on the map but I'm sure there will be other crap that I 'must' have.

i thought the same thing, but I had it in Nevada, Iceland, and summer in NC, and i have never thought it was too stuffy. i know it sounds crazy - i listed it in the 'pro' section of the review. its really a delightful tent it might be because it has the same headroom as boxered's hilleburg

but there are no doubt a hundred other options out there.

I'll come back and look at this thread when it's time to buy a proper tent for sure.

So, REI didn't have the map I lost (well, they did, but it came in a set) so I picked up another large, way overkill map. Oh well.

And I was suckered into picking up a Petzl Tikka XP2 headlamp. I've never had one before but have always heard they beat the hell out of carrying a flashlight in your hand.

Now I just need to pick up a roll or two of 35mm film, pack up some fishing lures and get ready to hit the road in the AM.

Are you kidding me? A good headlamp is an indispensable piece of camping gear. Especially in the backcountry. I'm a freaking HL junkie. Wear the thing around the house, too much.

...maybe I'm just old school?!?!

I have been wearing it around the office. Turned all the lights off and have been humming the Mission Impossible theme song.

Petzl make good stuff. My first headlamp was from them. I switched to Blackd Diamond Spot a while back. I have three of these (one for car/camp/home).

That's the one I was trying to decide between.

Camping equipment? Heck I bought mine for camping originally and I now use it for nearly everything. REALLY handy for working on computers and cars.

Oh, BTW, I have used Petzl and Black Diamond headlamps and they both work well. The Black Diamond head band seems to hold shape a bit longer, but that may simply be the model I bought (the Spot).

I just think petzl is a better more inventive company. They are probably completely the same.

The tikka has been around (though updated) since the 90s so has the cats meow

That's why I have kind of a soft spot in my heart for both pieces of gear
