OMGHi2U Daily Driving Etiquette

Been reading a lot about how other drivers are bad drivers. How about we list our daily driving etiquette and maybe we can get an idea and learn on how to be a better driver from a more experience drivers.

Random Facts: 98% of the driver thinks they drive better than other drivers.

This is not a thread and bash other drivers because they drive 40 MPH on the passing lane. We have too many of those already.

For now, here's my short list.

- If i'm on the far right lane of the freeway/hwy and someone is coming in from the ramp to merge in my lane. I'll usually try to change lane, if it's safe, to let them merge smoothly.

- I also change lane (if it's available/safe) or slow down when a police/towing/cars have their blinking/hazard lights on, whle on the shoulder.

- Change lane, if it's safe, so people can pass.

- I give people a wave (other than waving at suby owners) when they let me cut in front of them.

What are yours?

I can answer this because I taught my son how to drive recently and still continue to offer help.

2 hands on the wheel unless you're actively doing something with one. (You're shifting RIGHT NOW).

Directional for every turn.

Stay in the right lane if you're not passing.

When turning or crossing a road, commit and get across quickly.

Look ahead to where you want to be.

Brake before you need to.

Be very aware of other drivers and always leave yourself a way out in case **** happens.

I was a HPDE driver instructor for 12 years. Of the newbies I brought onto the track for the first time, with exception of very good autocrossers or very good ice racers, most drove like crap. I'm not talking about lack of heel & toe. You don't need that on the street. I mean looking 40 feet in front of the car (what most drivers do), hand on the shift knob, bad seating position, bad hand position.

I don't consider myself to be the best driver. I've ridden with Bill Prout (look him up) when I interviewed to be an instructor for SCDA. HE is a good driver. I'm several tiers down. The average driver on the road sucks compared to my 16 year old son. I'm not even kidding. I'll include my wife at sucking at driving.

The biggest PITA thing I deal with here in NH are the state highways that are one lane each way, but then have occasional stretches with an extra lane for passing. There are signs that say "slower traffic keep to right", but what most idiots do is stay in the left lane and speed up so anyone trying to get by them has to go WAY over the speed limit in the right lane. Then when it's one lane again, they slow back down to below the speed limit with a line of cars behind them. So freaking annoying!

Moving out of the right lane on the freeway for cars that are merging is a big one for me. I drive slow, and like a person who's not a douchebag, I keep my slow driving in the right lane, as others should.

Since I sold my wrx I find myself driving the speedlimit (or at least closer to it) more often and allowing many more cars to pass me.

Those are my biggest two. Esp in NJ when theres an onramp every mile, you kinda get used to it.
The second one you have there, i always try and do, esp with police. I found out that PA has a law that you HAVE to move over if there is police on the shoulder, and im sure some other states do too. So probably good to always get in that habit.

-Navigating a Circle (becoming less prominent here for some reason) Always yield to the traffic on the left before entering.

-Four way stop- It always seems like no one ever knows what to do at one. And everyone just looks like a deer in headlights if there are four cars present, and normally will end up with everyone beeping or waving someone along.
Typically the first vehicle at the intersection should move forward first. If two or more vehicles reach the intersection at the same time, the driver on the right would have the right of way.

-Motorcycle in area etiquette- This is more of a just be more aware of your surroundings idea. When spring approaches, the crotch rockets come on out of the garages. Now i'd say atleast more than half of the riders are typically douches who don't know how to ride, and then proceed to think they own the highways/roads.
If you hear one approaching on the highway, just be aware of where they are before switching lanes. Alot of times, they are very easy to be in a drivers blind spot, and that person will end up cutting them off, or running into them. Sometimes a quick glance over your shoulder (if safe too), can end up saving you from smashing into a bike, even if that rider deserves it, you know we'd be the ones at fault.

Lastly if someones tailgating you on the highway, go slower and blast your wiper fluid so it completely soaks them, works best if they're in convertible.
i do not condone the last one lol

Hmm, sounds like I-90 to me. Except its USUALLY people in the right lane going 79 mph, and people in the left lane (with his front bumper eating your rear bumper), 80 mph. Then usually people pass on the right.

I am in no way saying I am a good driver, but respect for others people's space is important, especially when on the expressway. By law in NYS we are suppose to accomodate for people coming on to the expressway, by either speeding up or slowing down. And as for cops, if they're pulled over of hte side of the expressway, I always look for a safe spot to merge into the next lane over.

I only use the left lanes for passing or if I have a left turn coming up.
I signal for every lane/directional change, even without other cars around.
I let others merge, and acknowledge with a wave.
If another car behind me, whilst in the left lane, I merge to the right to let them pass.
Always stop completely at stop signs and stop lights.

I live in an annoying spot in MN, actually rated as having the worst drivers in the state in some news article a few years ago. It's a combination of a college town with dumb kids, and senior citizens (no offense, only stating fact). There's essentially no middle aged people in this town, which leads to the following commonalities:

People drive 5-10 MpH under the limit 95% of the time.
People drive in the left lane, under the limit, and will not change lanes to let you pass.
No turn signals a substantial part of the time, considering this is the Midwest.
No stopping at stop signs, not even slightly, just powering through.
Running red lights so late that those with green start moving and have to slam on their brakes.

I never had road rage until I moved to this damn town, lol. Actually, I don't get pissed...I just shake my head at them or signal what the speed limit is (assuming they can count on fingers).

Except that the state highways in NH (like Route 16) have looooong sections that are just one lane each way. It's not uncommon for 20 or 30 cars to be lined up behind someone who is driving slowly. Then when you finally reach the two lane section, the snail up front guns it and tries to keep people from passing for some reason. There's a mad rush and only 1 or 2 manage to get by on the right before the passing lane ends and the road goes back to one lane. Then the jerk slows back down to 5 mph below the speed limit. This happens all the time.

Just because I drive a fast car doesnt mean I have to drive the car quickly
drive in "pockets" on the high way (where cars are 10+ car lengths in front and behind you)
always change lanes (as long as safe/possible) when another vehicle wishes to merge onto the highway (probably a reason why we dont have lane merger issues here but why californians are complete re's)
leave windows untinted to make haters mad jelly

In Delaware, the law states that you must pull over to allow traffic (when five or more cars get behind you). As you may guess, this law is not enforced.

- provide plenty of space for the car in front of me
- always use signals
- not afraid to use a polite horn
- headlights on at all times
- two hands on the wheel

I DO NOT, however, change lanes on the highway to allow others to merge from on-ramps. They have 2 options, speed up with traffic and get with the program, or slow down and allow me to pass before merging.
