2.5 RS Airlock/losing coolant?
ok, so my '00 RS has been overheating lately and today i was told by a mechanic that it's got an airlock in the coolant system.. So i was curious as to how to bleed the system to get rid of the airlock! this nearly ruined my trip to go snowboarding today (took a truck instead).
also, i've noticed that it seems to be gradually eating up the coolant.. would a head gasket be the cause of both of these? My dad noticed today that the exhaust was putting out quite a bit more smoke than it should be (cold weather, about 15 degrees).. so burning coolant + airlock, bad head gasket letting air in and burning coolant? or could the airlock be created from the coolant level becoming too low in the first place, then more coolant being added on top? I'm just trying to get this thing fixed and then it may end up getting sold in the next few months... its going to be sad to see it go if we do sell it. Thanks!

That version of EJ25 is known to leak coolant, externally. Not like the really bad internal leaks from the earlier EJ25's. A new set of headgaskets is the best fix, although subaru did try to pawn that radiator stop leak crap on us, and we bought it, hook, line, and sinker.
If you follow the air bleeding procedure subaru has, you should be fine. IF it is just an air bubble. When you think you have it all out, with the engine warm, fill the overflow tank up and let it cool back down for a day or so. Then did it all over again, and squeeze the radiator hoses to move coolant bubble around to the radiator. Or pick up a wrench and learn how to do your own headgaskets....not too hard. Just gotta order the parts, and pull the engine. ~Josh~ |
