Default How To Part 1: Forester shift boot install in '12 up CVT Impreza:

Here are detailed directions of the install.

CVT with paddle shifters get this piece:
http://subaruonlineparts.com/subaru-...ot-p-3067.html

Base model without paddle shifters need this one:
http://subaruonlineparts.com/subaru-...ot-p-3600.html

The entire job should take 1/2 hour or less. (It took me a half hour taking pictures.)

Here is where we start.

Start by putting the car in drive and setting the e-brake. I did not disconnect the battery and it certainly is not necessary. You just have to listen to the chime for a few minutes.

Move the seats forward and locate the two plugs, one on either side, in the back near the floor.

Remove the covers and remove the screws with a phillips.

Now reach all the way down to the carpet along the side of the e-brake cover and lift straight up. It will pop loose.

When you remove the boot, you will find another phillips. Remove it and slide the console back just a little. Maybe an inch or two.

Across from where you removed the screw, you will see a black pin stuck into this:

Pull the pin out and re-insert it into the back part of the console where it came from.

Remove the shift knob by pushing the bright plastic piece down. Pull the C clip and lift the shifter knob out. Put it someplace where it will not get grease on anything or dirt in the grease.

To remove the front part of the console, start by lifting up at the back along the sides. A trim panel puller comes in handy but not critical.

Just work it loose toward the front and pull back to release the vertical part. Set it aside.

There are two tabs on either side that need to be released.

Lift the top part off and unplug the electrical connector.

Default Part 2

The next piece has locator pins in front with a light tab and a tab on either side in the back. Release the back tabs and lift up to remove the part.

Here is what you end up with. The red circles and arrows indicate where the pins and tabs attach.

Snap the new cover into place and reinstall the electrical connector.

The leather boot is next. The narrower part of the piece that fits up to the knob goes to the back.

Snapped onto the bezel.

Reinstall the shift knob but omit the piece you popped off the bottom during removal. (What I'm holding.) The new shift boot will snap up to where the other piece was. Don't forget to put the C clip back.

You can put it back in park and get the chime to stop now. Ha!

Bring the back part of the console forward and push the pin back in where you removed it from. Reinstall the phillips screw, and the screws in the back, along with their covers. Press the e-brake boot back into place and you're done.

Appreciate the time and effort to make this write up! I will definitely use this in the future.

Question: Is there a white stitching hand brake boot as well? I swore I read somewhere that this was available.

Question 2: Will the WRX (or STI, I forget) cup holder slider work on Imprezas?

Here's what it looks like. In this picture the person did the mod but decided to keep the silver base. I like the cup holder slider and think it makes things look really nice.

I don't know the answer to either question. If there is an e-brake boot with white stitching, I would also be up for that. It really would tie it all together.

For some reason, I am unable to see your pic of the cup holder slider. Do you have a link to any other pics?

John

edit: I'm coming up goose egg on the hand brake boot cover. I found one pic of an after market with white stitching but the link took me to something with red. I also found a factory red stitched one for a BRZ.

I also found a pic of the slider you mentioned. I'm guessing it would not fit although I suppose it depends on what parts would be needed.

Yes, I did this mod for my '13 Impreza. I used information from this page to get it done. Good luck.

Thanks for the link Edwin.

Looks like the sliding cup holder cover is part of an assembly. I ordered the parts from Heuberger Subaru just moments ago. Based on the link you provided, it also appears the assembly from an '08/'09 Outback/Legacy in ivory can be used for those wanting that color.

I ordered all the parts, including the mats for the bottom. Total including shipping came to $101.01. A nice mod to dress up the interior.

John

edit: As soon as I get the parts and verify the install, I will post part numbers and such in another thread. (Unless I find something already posted on the forum.)

Excellent thread! The information was very helpful. The only tip I would add is when you reinstall the shifter knob make sure the c clip lines up with the indentations on the shifter rod. The C clip flew off the first time I tried to install it, luckily I didn't lose it. Also, I used trim tools and it made the installation really easy.

Shifter boot and sliding cup holder installed.

Are they any models that may have a different cross compatible leather auto shift boot assembly that don't have the chrome ring?

any tips in helping me remove the bottom gear shift chrome bezel off? (its before removing the C-clip and lifting the shifter out) I've tried using a pry tool pushing down for the longest time and it just wouldn't budge.

No, you just need to push it down. Perhaps a flat screwdriver on both sides at the same time. It will go down and provide access to the C clip. There really is no trick that makes it easier.
