They look like they literally have -6 degrees camber on the front wheels.

Yeap thats why the "road course ringers" can't beat the regular nascar guys on the road courses.

That is the only time I have ever enjoyed watching NASCAR, they usually get the first turn right and then POW there's another and they are like deer in the headlights - into the wall they go

quoted for truth.

Having been on road course tracks with some of those 'roundy round' boys they are seriously fast doing anything in with wheels and a motor. Car control is car control and all of them have it

i was watching the practice today on speed. One guy (i have no idea what his name is) was making a left hander, and downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and lost control. The commentators called it "wheel hop." Where the rear wheels actually were bouncing up and down. But it seemed like their 'wheel hop' is what we would call a bad downshift. Also another theory could be the brake bias. Not too sure. What do you guys think?

T'was Boris Said. You could hear the chattering transmitted thru to the motor sound on the in-car.

Not at all surprised that Marcos Ambrose - having made his career on Australian road courses - would own this race.

Wheel hop = axle tramp?

I don't know much about those things, but isn't that a symptom of a live rear axle?

Yeah.. still like that Marcos kicked ass. And Boris Said was the one who had the "wheel-hop", in whichever session that was..

Are people even remotely aware that NASCAR drivers usually do a lot of road course races on the side? Jeff Gordon won the 2002 ROC and finished 3rd in the Rolex 24 hours; both events were his introductory races in each series.

I'm looking forward to it. I wouldn't say it's the driver's fault as much as the fact the cars have some limitations. Watching people adapt to the situation's always fun.

Here's to hoping there aren't too many cautions.

Because of the solid rear axle suspension design they have to use, these cars are very suceptible to wheel hop. They could run a stiffer shock in the car to help reduce that, but the more extra shock stiffness they run, the further away they get from the ideal shock damping for the springs to make the car faster overall. It's not so much a bad downshift as much as they run everything so close to the ragged edge that a slight issue that could be caused by something like a small bump in the track at teh wrong time can cause it, and because it's a harmonic problem, once the first "hop" happens, it gets worse.

I was looking forward to watching this race, but I'm gonna miss it since I'll be at work tomorrow (no Tivo for me ). Didn't the Nationwide Series run a road course race in the rain last year? Why not the Cup guys? I would think wipers could be adapted. Have they not done enough testing on rain tires, are the cars too heavy? I could see this being an issue on a high speed banked oval, but not so much on a road course.

If this was Boris Said, he has some serious road racing cred. Maybe he did make a mistake but it's not like he can't drive a road course.

Quote:
He first began racing in 1987 when he began racing in the SCCA. He got his big break with a ride in the SCCA World Challenge series in 1991 driving for Baer Racing, later to become Baer Brake Systems. Upon Baer's withdrawal from the series to focus on the manufacture of brakes in 1992, Boris got another big ride driving in the IMSA series in 1993 driving a BMW M3. He won the 1997 and 1998 24 Hours of Daytona and 1998 12 Hours of Sebring in IMSA. He also became the first American to win the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 2005 driving a BMW Motorsport-entered BMW M3 GTR with co-drivers Pedro Lamy, Duncan Huisman and Andy Priaulx.

Not exactly correct. Ambrose has won Watkins Glen 2 years in a row now and he is a "road course ringer" who has converted to NASCAR

If he can manage to be picked up by a team with more reliability and more speed he will give those "roundy round racers" a go for their money

Leslie.

He's beating the lower level guys, he hasn't won in Cup yet.

Years ago, the Nationwide/Busch Grand National series consisted of "the lower level guys", but it's less so these days.. at least a third of the field is "Cup" regulars.

Ambrose's oval experience was virtually nil when he came to NASCAR, which is why he's not threatening the top 10 on a regular basis/at all/in the majority of NASCAR races. But road courses are his bread and butter.

My point still stands, he hasn't won in Cup, which is where all 42 other drivers are the top level guys.
