Default Disable A/C on Defrost?

Anybody disable the automatic A/C turn on with defrost in the WRX.

I would assume there is a switch in the climate control console?

Anybody do this, it is kind of annoying to have it turn on all the time in defrost.

Thats how the defrost works. By turning on the AC... "Dries" the air.

On older vehicles the driver had to decide if he wanted it on or off. In order to clear the windshield you dont have to turn on the AC. On humid day it helps but you dont always need it.
I want control.

Agreed. The driver should be able to kick the a/c on by hitting the... a/c button. Subaru should put a blurb in the owners' manual about running the a/c to control fogging, and then leave the control to the driver. This is what Honda/Acura, VW/Audi, and I'm sure many other companies do.

So, has anyone defeated the auto a/c?

I'd like to know how to do this too. Cold air may be drier, but it actually fogs the windows in most conditions. Fogging windows are caused by condesation on the glass (warm/humid air, cold glass). I've always found that hot air clears them the fastest if you can stand the hot air.

The auto AC on mode also works with the floor/def setting. This is annoying to me as I like to use the floor and def. dash vents for general ventilation. I dont usually want the comp. on in that mode.

The easiest way would be to put an inline switch to the compressor clutch wires.

BRIGHT BLUE!

Angry Not easy..

I've also looked into doing that modification, but the switching is inside the fairly well sealed heat control panel. Removing the control panel is somewhat a pain since one need to then reconnect and adjust the cables that run the air doors. Then one would have to get inside the panel and find the connection that is made when the control is rotated to the defrost position. Sigh.

Default easiest way

For get about the wires to the magnetic clutch. Just pull the fuse to the AC! The AC will never turn on once that happens!

For a reference point, 1g Talons (DSM) had the manual control, 2g Talons (DSM) had automatic.

On the 2g's, there is a microswitch on the knob assembly, all you need to do is disconnect this, but not sure if the suby works the same way.

I don't mind it. If I get too cold AND it's fogging up in the windows, I just turn the temp dial to warm or hot, turn on defrost, and poof, it's gone! (the fog) It's still nice and toasty on cold days.

Thats the best short term Fix. Its winter now so I dont need the AC on unless of course its raining hard and really humid out....

Im pulling the fuse untill a good permenant fix comes along.

OTOH, running the A/C through winter helps keep the seals in your A/C system/compressor/rubber-joints fresh and lubricated at all times. During winter, seals may shrink/harden if the PAG or POE oil (or whatever lube is used) settles due to less use.

In cars with A/C that comes on with defrost, (at least with what cars I have dealt with), the A/C in general seems to last much longer (10+years vs 6 or less years). May not be an issue since R134 is so cheap, but still, lubrication is a good thing (and compressors are not cheap)

Can we bring this thread back from the dead to see if anyone knows how to make the A/C not come on automatically with defrost (other than pulling the fuse)? I would like to still use A/C with defrost manually via the A/C button if possible, but generally I know that just air blowing on the windshield will keep it from fogging and I don't like the performance loss from the A/C running. I know Alan said it's not easy. Maybe someone has an easy was to do it since it's been 7 years since this thread has been updated (it was the first one to come up when I googled nasioc for this).

I did this on my 04 wrx and it was about as easy as it looks, just have to remove radio and loosen center console to be able to move around (not quite remove) the center panel. There is a mechanical switch that engages when the climate control selector is in either of the 2 defrost modes. Remove those purple wires and you can choose when to engage ac.

BTW, I don't imagine this will be the same for MY05+ when they went electronic with the climate control, so good luck!

On my 03 WRX there is microswitch that is activated when you move the distribution knob to the defrost setting. I simply removed the trim around the controls and cut out the switch. Now the AC compressor is turned on only when i press the AC button. It took about 20 min to do the whole thing. I have manual controls, I'm sure it is not that simple on cars with automatic environmental controls.
