Default 04 Side Splitter Install!

OK, I was asked to post in another thread how to install the side splitters, so I figured I would start a new thread to make it easier to find for everyone.

Here goes...

For the side splitters to go onto my wrx, I cut 3 holes per side for the tabs to go into. Here is a picture of the 3 holes:

To cut these holes I carefully lined up the side splitters with the car to determine where the hole should go, and then used a sharp knife to cut the holes. It's more than a slit. The is actually a little bit of plastic missing...

I then "adjusted" the splitters to be used on a WRX instead of an STi. In this picture you can see the 2 splitters. The top one has had the white tabs removed, as well as the black plastic pieces that held them in place. To do this I used the same sharp knife. (Actually a steak knife):

You then pop the 3 tabs on each side into the hole you cut in your bumper, and use the metal tabs and bolts that came with the splitter to bolt the rest up under the car. That is the easy part. The only tricky or hard part of the whole thing is cutting the whole and more becasue you have to cut a whole in your nice car...

Here are some finished pictures:

Good Luck, and feel free to post any questions, or additional help in this thread.

Those are really nice! Wish that stuff was availbe for the 03' but just not as expensive... who is gonna pay $400 for the stock front lip/strake on each side of the front of the bumper... that's outragous!

Yours looks really nice! Should come from the factory like that other than the STI :-)

Can you take a closeup profile shot of your wagon for me... I know yours isn't as wide in the wheel well arches, but I wouldn't doubt that you could get them to work...

like most small subtle aerodynamic parts... it'll probably work, but only noticeable at about 2x the speed limit. =)

EDIT: i see the brackets are an option. i think im gonna do the 3M mod anyway.

Bump for some uber-n00b notes that might help others like me.

I just did this install last night and I've got a few tips that may help other complete mod newbies. These are not in any particular order!

1. After doing one side, I found it was easier to remove the 3 black plastic anchors before starting. I haven't seen anyone else talk about removing and reinstalling these during the install, but I think they're intended to be used with the splitter. So in the end, you have the splitter attached by the 3 tabs on top, the 3 black plastic anchors, and the 3 bolts/clips included with the splitters.

1a. Make sure you know how to work those plastic anchors. They're made up of two parts: a center nail-like thing, and a outer molly-like anchor piece. It's easiest if you take out the center portion first, then pull out the molly-like anchor portion.

2. I found 8 places (4 on each side) that could use a bolt and clip, even though only 6 are included in the kit. It's fine though, 3 each side is enough. I put two in the two forward-most positions on the underneath and one at the top position in the wheel well. Considering the locations of the other anchors, I found this to be a good balance.

3. I used a small drill bit to get a start on the cuts in the bumper. I just had to be careful not to let the drill get away from me and chew up too much bumper... cause it kind of wanted to.

4. It would be easier if you had ramps or something, just a little more space to work with. But I did it just fine with the car on the ground.

Hopefully this helps someone, I imagine most people won't need these.

i tried the knife way when i did mine. it didnt work. unless you have like a samurai sword. so my addition is that a dremel + router tool + your steady hand is your friend.

brought back from the dead. Have fun with the install. Real easy to do. I was indecisive on cutting the tabs off or cutting the bumper. I went with the tabs coming off. Easy to do just make sure you get the right 3M tape. I went to like 7 places before finding the right stuff at a true value. Been on for 7 months with speeds upto 110 and no problems at all.

no it would look the same, but youd have to drill holes in your bumper for those snap fasteners. Since they are an OEM replacement for the STI tabs, I would assume the sti bumper has those holes underneath in stock form.

instead of removing the mounting, i'm just going to remove the white tab and put double sided tape in it...
