Default Smog check stalled because second computer cannot confirm VIN number

Hi community,

I own a 2005 Impreza Outback Sport. Has almost 200k miles on her be still runs great.

I recently went to do a smog check, but as the guy was setting up to start the test, he told me that the test will fail because "the second VIN check doesn't pass because the second computer is down."

I'm not 100% sure what this means, but I gather there are actually two control computers in the car, and the smog check program tries to communicate with both to confirm the VIN nr.

My next step is to take the car to a mechanic, but I don't want to go in blind so thought I would bring this up here first in case anyone has some insight.

Would it be worth it for me to buy a cheap obd2 scanner to see something for myself? Would a cheap scanner even pick up this issue?

Having to replace a computer sounds like an expensive undertaking and it would be a shame if it's too expensive since I would think that would almost write off the car, which still runs great

Thanks in advance
Michael

I read this to mean the testing facility second computer. Is this what the mechanic meant?

Hi,

No, the car's second computer. He said the car has two computers.

So, I took my car to a dealership, and after spending $190 for an inspection fee, they told me there is nothing wrong with the car.

I then went to another smog check station to get a second opinion, and the car passed no problem.

So, after wasting a morning and almost $200, what I learnt is to rather go to
a better smog check station and get a second opinion. The vague description from the first place I went to should have tipped me off that maybe they don't know exactly what they're doing.

Maybe this helps someone in the future.

Cheers
Mike

Did the first place charge you?

Perhaps contacting DMV and registering a complaint?
