OP - looks like some great information here - can you please update the photo links (maybe these photos were hosted on photo bucket)?

Short of that does anybody have the photos for this and the engine removal saved? If so it would be great if they could be zipped up and posted to sendspace or some other file hosting service along those lines.

I know this is ancient, but...

The first reply in this thread says:

3) You need to get the sealing surfaces for the head gaskets way cleaner than that. Those little dark areas are sites for potential future HG leaks. Subaru HGs are stupid fracking picky about how well you clean up. All around the sides of the shortblock, all under the heads, needs to be spotless.

I've been cleaning with a plastic razor, a rag and brake cleaner for 3 hours, and those little dark spots stubbornly persist!

Many seem to advocate using a razor blade, and others say never use anything sharp or abrasive. I can understand why, and it seems much safer not to, so I've erred on the side of caution. Is there any solvent that will help loosen them up?

I use a roloc white head for my head gasket and mating surfaces. It cuts everything like a hot knife in butter and won’t risk any damage to the soft aluminum.
