![]() Need help diagnosing a noise. It is a 2004 wrx with sti mods (intercooler, injectors, exhaust ...)
I swapped a leaking vf30 with a used vf34. The turbo did not have shaft play or sign of failure. I installed the turbo. It doesn't smoke, pulls nice but I get this weird noise. I am not sure if it is coming from turbo itself or an uppipe leak. I can hear the noise in the cabin when accelerating from stop (or accelerating after a turn) but can't hear anything in high boost when I step on the pedal. The noise is not there if I keep the wastegate open manually and rev it while idling. And it is not transmission, a/c, ps pump, alternator related. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKJM7gO4lx8

Yea, seems like it is common for vf34 turbos to make that whine. I searched "vf34 whine" on google and lots of threads showed up. It actually sounds cool, as long as there is nothing wrong with it. ![]() |

![]() I never heard that sound when I had a VF34 but then I never tried or had a need to look for it either in 100,000 miles.

![]() I never said that my VF34 was the only one that doesn't make that noise. I said
Quote:
Which also begs the question, " Why is the OP, or anyone else for that matter, revving the motor without putting a load on the engine like that just to hear their turbo whine? " One can find all sorts of " suspicious noises " in their car, all they have to do is go looking for them and then think they have an issue which never existed. We see lots of " What is this noise " posts when it is just a new owner panicking over something they think they hear / heard which turns out to be absolutely nothing.
