Default Need Advice re: Warranty Work on Tranny in Socal

Hello all:

I've had a bad first-gear syncro for a very long time. I've taken my 02 Rex to three different dealers (Irvine, Timmons and Santa Monica) who claimed they could not replicate the problem, or claimed that a small amount of grinding when shifting into first is normal. One of the guys at Suby Specialties (I forgot which one) opined that I definitely had a warranty issue with the syncro.

I decided to drive the car for a while to see if the grinding got worse, and it has. I'm nearing the end of my 60,000 mile drive train warranty, so I took it into Rennick. I just got off the phone with George over there who told me there was nothing wrong with the car. He said that it's normal to grind shifting into first at a stop if you don't shift into another gear first. He added anecdotally that every car he has driven since 1976 has required a shift into another gear before going into first.

I told him that was rediculous. I have never driven a car that required me to shift into another gear before going into first. We got into an argument, and I decided that this is not the guy, and this is not the dealership that I want to fix my problem.

Now I don't know what to do. Every dealership I've gone to so far refuses to fix the problem, and 60,000 is coming up fast. Any advice? Does anyone know particular mechanics at particular dealerships who won't dick me around?

if you're up for a road trip, santa cruz subaru fixed my syncro problem.

shifting into a differnt gear and then to first gear does make sense. it will re-allign the gears for you so that first will go in. also applying the clutch and then letting go and letting your car roll forward a little can help with that problem too.

now. if the dealership sees that your 2nd gear is in bad shape, they probably won't warantee the work. also i suggest taking engine mods out before bringing the car into the dealership. soa has been cracking down on this. it would be an expensive fix otherwise.

when i took my car in, the first dealership dicked me around saying it was my clutch just because it was aftermarket. bla bla bla. so i let them replace the clutch so that they'd fix my tranny. BUT i took the car to another dealership (santa cruz) who knew of my problem, promised me it would be fixed in a week and gave me a rental for free. not only that, but when i went in the following friday, even though it wasnt ready, they took me to the car, showed me the transmission and what parts were broken. they talked to me like i knew what was going on with the car (which i do) and treated me with respect. i couldn't ask for more.

anyway, good luck.

yeah. i'm sorry. tranny's a hard part to mess around with. i'm sure the dealerships are either making an assumption or are being lazy. you may try calling SOA and telling them about your problem and asking them which dealership they recommend.

i know some people don't like irvine subaru, but i know that their service department manager is a really good guy. you may want to talk to him directly. just remember to be respectful to the people you talk to. you don't want to give them a bad first impression.

I had the same problem... took it to dealership after dealership, only to be told to bring it back in when it became "worse". considering it would grind every say, third time I shifted into first, I asked exactly what "worse" would be.... "well, like EVERY time you shift into first would be 'worse'...." umm okay.... then not only would it happen every time, it also started popping out of second around corners. NOT fun for a canyon runner... So I took it into T.O - They agreed to replace the syncros, but since I was at 40k, they wouldn't cover the clutch, which they said was "weak" (and they also wanted $450+ to replace). I told them just to do the syncros and that I would have my mechanic replace the clutch. They gave me a loaner car and a week later I came to pick it up. While reading the invoice I realized they had done a lot more than just the syncros. According to the list I was reading, they actually replaced ALL the internal tranny parts AND gave me a new clutch and pressure plate. The difference in it was incredible. I guess I had been driving on a bad clutch for so long I just forgot what a good one felt like! It took a little getting used to, but I am so happy with the outcome. And I can only imagine what the cost of everything would have been if I had to pay it all out of my pocket. So I know you are discouraged... but be persistent. This is not something you want to blow off until you start popping out of gear. And it FOR SURE is not something you want to pay for yourself!! Good luck to you -
