Default 67 mpg Honda Fit Hybrid due in 2010

Quote:
According to AutoCar, Honda will be adding a hybrid version of the Jazz - aka the Honda Fit on our side of the world - by 2010. The publication reports that the hybrid version of the Jazz/Fit will use the same mechanicals as the upcoming Honda Insight Hybrid which will make its debut next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Sources say that the 1.3 liter gasoline engine mated to Honda’s new hybrid system should deliver around 67 mpg. Honda announced yesterday that it has teamed up with Japanese firm GS Yuasa to develop lithium-ion batteries for future Honda hybrids. We’re not sure if lithium-ion batteries will be substituted for the nickel-hydride batteries for the Jazz/Fit hybrid.

Honda says that it is hoping to sell 500,000 hybrids annually by 2010. Joining the Hybrid Insight, Civic Hybrid, and the Jazz/Fit Hybrid will be the CR-Z Coupe hybrid, which is also due out in 2010.

Awe-some.

I love the Fit and having one to get that good of mileage for hopefully $18k would be an awesome DD.

OK, Fit starts at $14,750. Fit sport is $16,260. Civic ranges from $15,500 to $20,000. Civic hybrid is $23,000. I think the Civic hybrid is spec'd out more like the upper end Civic, so you are looking at a $3k premium for the hybrid. The Insight is supposed to be sub-$20k. I see no reason why they couldn't bring the Fit hybrid for around $18k. It would have to undercut the Insight on price since the Insight will likely be Civic sized (or larger). They should also have economies of scale on their side when they are offering 3 different hybrids versus just one low volume hybrid.

But the Insight is built on the Fit platform, modified to be an inch wider and 3" longer.

I have to think that the Insight will be positioned as the "image" hybrid while the Fit Hybrid would hit the "utility" market.

But then I've also seen reports that the Fit Hybrid is not destined to come to the US, because Honda's sales figures for the Accord and Civic Hybrids shows that US consumers want hybrids to be "distinctively styled."

Personally a Fit Hybrid (magic seats, tall roof, big cargo area, etc) is what I really want, but I'll settle for an Insight. I can't wait yet another year to replace the ol' Forester...

Yup, that's why the Prius did so much better than the Civic hybrid. Its all about image ...

But I thought the new 35 MPG CAFE standards were impossible to meet!?!?!?!
What kind of magic or trickery is Honda using to get those numbers???

Here is a sub $20k that DOUBLES that new CAFE standard - standards that are still years and years away.

...which is interesting to me, since it's not like the Prius is a great-looking car. I guess its look has become synonymous with being environmentally friendly, which is perhaps why the new Insight has a lot of the same visual cues.

A lot of people assume Fits are hybrids already, or that they get astronomical gas mileage because of their small size. A trim that gets more than double the mileage of the current one for a few grand more is awful tempting, even though I'm still not a fan of the GE.

More bad news for the Prius if this car makes it to the US. I wonder what Toyota is planning to fight the these 2 Hondas?

A buddy of mine has one and doesn't get great gas mileage. I'm sure it doesn't help that he floors it all the time because it has no power though.

City, I get 28. Highway, depending on how I drive, is roughly 35. Not bad, IMO, but not great.

I think the Fit could definitely use more power, but I think 200hp stock is too much for a car like this. I think around 150hp sounds right (similar to the 00-era Si B16A2s), which would be just over a 20% power increase over the 09. This would make the Fit Sport a lot more appealing to people instead of it being mainly an aesthetic/creature comfort upgrade.

The Fit isn't even 150lbs lighter than a Civic... and the Civic Si is fairly slow by today's standards. 200hp in the Fit would be very, very far from 'too much'.

Good luck with 40mpg.

The 5spd Fit is rated at the same highway mpg as the 5spd Civic (28/34 mpg vs 26/34 mpg).. and the Civic Si is rated at 21/29. At best I would expect a Fit Si to be rated at 24/32. Being tiny actually hurts aerodynamics on the highway.

You must have missed the hybrid part. Sounds like a sweet idea to me.

I thought he meant that they should build a Fit Si as well as the Fit Hybrid.. not a Fit Si Hybrid. Oops.

As long as it is not much slower than the current Fit, highway passing takes too damn much effort. Current Fit's MPG is just ok (we get about 30mpg mixed), otherwise my wife and I both love it.

I'd love to see a Fit Si with the 160hp K20 from the RSX/last-gen Si, a distinctive body kit/wheels, and sport suspension.

Beaverboy: true if comparing the non-Si trims, but the Civic Si is about 500 lbs heavier than a Fit. IIRC, I think a K20 would only add about ~100 lbs over the L15A. Power to weight would be close to STI/Evo territory if my Friday afternoon mind math is working correctly. OK, fine, I'll admit it... this would be cool!

Yep, gimme some wider fenders while you're at it so that I can fit more than 205s under there.

Are you getting this, Honda? I will swear on a stack of holy books, if you bring a 160+ HP Fit and keep it light and nimble, you have a buyer.

Oh, and considering the torque characteristics of electric motors, a fit hybrid *could* be more entertaining than the current iteration...

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Figure the electric motor is going to add anywhere up to an extra 150 ft*lbs in the low rev range. I suspect it'll be quite engaging enough to drive at up to 60mph or so.

As for how they doubled the mileage, it's almost guaranteed this is on the Japanese 10-15 test cycle, which is very gentle. Say, mid-40's EPA08-highway?

The 5-sp Fit gets lousy highway mileage because of the gearing. For some unfathomable reason Honda made the gearing even shorter in the redesign.
