Default GM to revive Hummer name with electric pickups, SUVs:

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - General Motors Co (GM.N) will revive the Hummer name to sell a new family of electric pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles and will tout the return with a Super Bowl ad featuring NBA star LeBron James, two people briefed on the matter said on Friday.

The vehicles will be sold under the GMC nameplate. Reuters reported in October that GM planned to build a new family of premium electric pickup trucks at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant beginning in late 2021 and was considering reviving the Hummer name, citing several people familiar with the plans.

The Wall Street Journal reported GM’s decision to move forward earlier on Friday. GM declined to comment.

The electric truck and SUV program is the centerpiece of a planned $3 billion investment in the Detroit-Hamtramck plant to make electric trucks and vans, and part of a broader $7.7 billion investment in GM’s U.S. plants over the next four years that was part of a new contract signed with the United Auto Workers union last year.

The investment moves the automaker into a part of the EV market that is largely untested and where GM has a higher likelihood of turning a profit, analysts said.

Reuters reported GM plans to first build EV pickups in late 2021 and then an electric SUV in 2023.

Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk in November unveiled an electric pickup called “Cybertruck” it plans to build starting in late 2021.

Rivian, a start-up electric company backed by Amazon.com (AMZN.O), will begin building 100,000 electric delivery vans for Amazon starting in 2021.

Hummers were rugged civilian utility vehicles with low gas mileage that were inspired by military vehicles and were popular with such celebrities as actor Arnold Schwarzenegger but derided by environmentalists as gas-guzzlers. GM shut down its Hummer brand after a deal to sell the SUV-line to an obscure Chinese machinery maker was blocked by Chinese regulators in 2010.

Michael Harley, executive editor for Kelley Blue Book, noted “the original Hummer was ostracized out of showrooms for being heavy and ponderous with an insatiable appetite for gasoline. An all-electric powertrain essentially exonerates the truck on all charges.”

Electric pickups and SUVs - the heart of the U.S. market - could help Ford Motor Co (F.N) and GM generate significant sales of EVs needed to meet tougher California emission standards and electric vehicle mandates.

The Trump administration is moving to roll back those standards – and eliminate extra credits that automakers receive from EV sales but electric trucks are a hedge if California prevails.

Arnold concerted his H1’s in EV’s and its pretty bad ass. That said, GM will **** this up and it will look awful and overall be pretty stupid.

Default Hummer Is Making A Comeback With A 1,000 Horsepower Electric Truck!

Quote:
Hummer Is Making A Comeback With A 1,000 Horsepower Electric Truck!

After being defunct for a decade now, the Hummer moniker is making a comeback; this time under GMC’s umbrella as an EV. The rumors of the Hummer-revival were surfacing the internet for quite some time, and now the company has confirmed the same. GMC has announced that it will debut the Hummer EV truck on May 20, 2020. However, the company will be airing a 30-second commercial during the Superbowl; during the second quarter of the game, to be precise. How exciting is this?!

This Would Be One Of The Most-Anticipated Revivals

The legendary hardcore brand is all set to be electrified. GMC announced that it will be building the Hummer EV at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly. This isn’t going to be a one-off vehicle or a concept by any means.

GMC plans to mass-produce the vehicle, and the $2.2 billion investment into the resurrected brand is a testimony to that.

Hummer EV’s motto “Quiet Revolution” seems fitting of what is on the cards. The GMC Hummer EV will be a monster of a truck with some mind-blowing specs. The truck will produce 1,000 horses and 11,500 pound-feet of torque! It will sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in three seconds flat. GMC also said that the Hummer EV truck will retain its fantastic off-road capability while having zero emissions and reduced noise. This is the exact opposite of what the Hummer is known for. The long-gone first-gen Hummer had a V-8 gasoline engine and it was known to be a fuel guzzler! Nice to see GM being bold to change the brand’s image and adapt to changing times.

Hummer Electric Specifications
Horsepower 1,000 HP
Torque 11,500 LB-FT
0 to 60 mph 3 seconds

Hummer will be teasing the truck during the Superbowl ad slot. The company has reserved a 30-second slot and will break the cover (sort of) during the second-quarter ad slot of the most-watched U.S. television broadcast. It revealed a series of short commercials that focus on the words “Quiet Revolution” while retaining its hardcore specs. In all likelihood, the price will breach the six-digit figure in the mid- and top-spec trims.

Final Thoughts

The Hummer EV is expected to go up against the Rivian EV and the Tesla Cybertruck.

But, if it plans to launch a cheaper base trim with “regular” specs, it will face a lot of competition in the form of the upcoming electric Ford F-150, Lordstown Endurance, and so on. In the top spec, it could go up against the Bollinger B2. Wherever it slots itself, the Hummer EV will have competition. I would’ve suspected the Hummer EV to be a niche, premium offering, but since the company is looking to mass-produce the truck, it could very well be cheaper than expected.

Default Why Hummer's Massive Torque Number in Super Bowl Ad Is Misleading

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Why Hummer's Massive Torque Number in Super Bowl Ad Is Misleading

By the measurement we suspect GM is using to arrive at 11,500 lb-ft, a Chevy Silverado 3500HD pickup would make 14,129 lb-ft.

Quote:
Quote:

GMC claims in a Super Bowl ad that the new Hummer EV truck makes 11,500 lb-ft of torque.

This number sounds impressive, but it's misleading because we suspect it was calculated using a non-standard way of reporting torque.

The GMC Hummer EV will make its debut May 20, 20220 and go on sale in late 2021.

In a buzzworthy Super Bowl ad for its new Hummer electric truck, GMC is bragging that this new model makes an insane 11,500 lb-ft of torque. But this is like your doctor telling you that you have a 313-degree fever—in Kelvin. Although GMC isn't providing more details about these braggadocious claims at this point, we suspect that this number was generated using an atypical way of reporting torque.

Torque is a measure of the amount of rotating force produced by an engine—or, in the case of an EV, an electric motor (or multiple motors). It is calculated in either pound-feet or newton-meters, as measured at the crankshaft. But this 11,500-lb-ft number is almost certainly referring to the amount of torque measured at the wheels, meaning it is multiplied by the Hummer's gear ratio (or ratios).

Applying this same method to other conventional gasoline-powered trucks would generate equally shocking numbers. The Chevy Silverado 3500HD's 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8 engine makes 910 lb-ft at the crank, but multiplying that number by its first-gear and final-drive ratios results in an insane 14,129 lb-ft, more than the Hummer's claim.

Hummer is not providing the new electric truck's gearing at this point. But based on the light-duty Silverado's gear ratios—which range from 13.8 to 16.1 depending on engine, transmission, and final-drive options—we can guess that the Hummer's real torque number is somewhere between 715 and 834 lb-ft.

Vehicles like this illustrate why GM is so out of touch. Rather than come out with something that rivals what Tesla is doing or even Ford with the Mach E they bring back this pretentious abomination of excess that went out of style over a decade ago.

Who are the morons at GM that thought this would be a good idea? I can see lawsuits for misleading consumers. Just use the standard method of measurement for EV torque, etc. They want to revive a brand / vehicle and start off on the wrong foot by not being ethical is presenting specs but using a bull**** method.

This already tells me it's going to have **** range, likely inferior power to Tesla, Rivian and probably Ford.

Pathetic

Depending on how it looks, I'd be down to buy one. I always wanted an H1 but they are still really expensive.

Glad they are bringing Hummer back!

You do realize that this is the same company that thought numbering their Cadillac models based on the torque output in Newton meters rounded to the nearest 50 made sense.

They are also good on bastardizing names and brands. They can't even be creative enough to come up with a new name.

The name doesn’t need to change. If it looks like a hummer, call it a hummer. Just because it goes EV doesn’t mean the name needs to change.

Based on GMs recent past with new vehicles I predict the Hummer will not reach GMs unrealistic predicted sales figures and they will piss away $3+billion, give up and end production after 2 model years....

No way. The first year it will slay sales so they ramp up more. Year 2 it’s tapers, year 3 it craps the best. On year 4 they release the H2 (has a small bed) and it all goes to ****.

You were close, just need to tack on 2 extra years .

I’ll be cautiously optimistic. If they can give it a nice interior like Tahoe or Denali and have it be comfortable, I can see it doing moderately well in the Mid West to the south. It’s probably going to cost out the ass though.

Pretty sure the H2 was built a few years after it was scrapped. The rumor at the time was that the oil companies pushed GM to produce more gas guzzlers. Had a buddy then who was excited that it was a “crushing blow to all the hippies” because he wanted an H2. He never did buy one lol. Nobody wants 10mpg.

The sad part is it only guzzled gas, it wasn’t quick, it towed like ****, ride quality was worse than their trucks. It was just a complete hunk of turd. Didn’t GM pawn the Hummer brand off to some Chinese schmucks?

Default Ultimate Off-Road GMC Hummer EV Coming In 2023

Quote:
Ultimate Off-Road GMC Hummer EV Coming In 2023

The party is just getting started.

There was certainly some risk involved turning the Hummer nameplate into an all-electric vehicle, but General Motors decided to take a chance. Within just 10 minutes, every 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 had sold out, each fully-loaded example costing nearly $113,000. An SUV variant is expected to debut next month as well. The online enthusiasm remains solid and more Hummer EV variants are planned through 2024. GM clearly made the right call.

According to Hummer Nation, one of those variants will aim to prove that EVs and off-roading go perfectly together. The 2023 GMC Hummer EV truck will supposedly be offered with an Extreme Off-Road Package that will include goodies like 18-inch wheels, 35-inch OD mud terrain tires, front and rear e-lockers, heavy-duty ball spline shafts, full underbody skid plates, underbody cameras, and more.

It's still way too early to know package pricing details but it's important to point out all of those features are already standard on the Edition 1. The 2023 Hummer EV, priced from $99,995, will essentially make them optional via the Extreme Off-Road Package. It is very possible that additional features will be added to the list closer to launch.

The 2022 Hummer, all of which are Edition 1s, packs a total of 1,000 horsepower and subsequent model years will have slightly less power. The 2023 Hummer will be rated at around 800 hp with its three electric motor setup while the 2024 Hummer will have two motors producing a total of 625 hp.

Given that it appears GM plans to create a separate off-road package following the release of the Edition 1 begs another question: will it also be available on the less powerful 2024 Hummer? We honestly don't see any reason why not and given that the Hummer EV isn't exactly cheap, buyers are highly likely to tack on additional packages; what's a few more thousand bucks on top of the cheapest Hummer's $79,995 base price?

Hopefully, more details will arrive regarding optional packages throughout GMC's multi-year Hummer launch plan.

It's amazing what a year will do. Now people want a Hummer EV and folks are wondering why Ford is so behind the times with the Bronco.

How if Ford behind the times with the Bronco? I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar there is an EV Bronco within 5 years time and we will see a decent amount that bought the ICE variants trade them in for EV. Its actually a pretty damn smart play.

As a new ICE-based platform the Bronco is already far behind the curve of the Hummer (assuming EV Hummer isn't eventually vaporware, of course).

If Ford does drop an EV Bronco it will need to be based on a skateboard (or other bespoke EV chassis type) like the Mach-E. EVing an ICE chassis leads to all the downsides of every other half-assed compliance EV on the market. Poor packaging and limited range compared to the competiton. Folks can go to EV West with their old Bronco if it's a retrofit they're after.

All I know is they threw a lot money around/at the Bronco. Oh course it was Pre Covid and Stock market was like NASA rocket, orange man could in DC.

So far There's going to be a bronco truck
Race Bronco Truck
2 door bronco
hybrid Bronco is already out and about spy shots
Might be right hand drive for Europe etc, they did patents in Europe anyway
You hot the removable roof and door versions
They already stated it will used on the Ranger chassis and others.
So full EV version is a go
