As a non-car enthusiast, I really appreciate the ample reading material here on behalf of OP and I'd to add "Because Racecar"

What kind of gas mileage does a heavily built or fully built STi get, ballpark? Is there an "economy" tune to switch over to when wanting to save on gas and keep her running a little slower?

You don't buy these cars if your worried about spending money on gas. I was getting about 16mpg on E85 with my WRX in mixed driving. Slightly higher running 91. The worse I ever got was 4mpg while canyon carving. You can switch maps to be more economical, but it's not going to be a huge improvement. The best way to save gas is to stay out of boost.

The STi will be my play car, but it'll also be my daily driver. So, I gotta kinda keep gas in mind a little bit. On a DD basis though, staying out of boost wont be a problem. I'll drive like a grandma going to and from work/school/store. I mean, granted, I'll punch probably at least once a day, but I'm usually really good about that sorta thing. |

*That is for a 16bit ECU (02-05 WRX), with the whole STi shebang..again minus the ECU and AVCS. |

^basically nothing left of the OEM long block except the casings, otherwise completely forged/performance aftermarket internal bottom and upper halves. ...also includes air and fueling.

Update: 420/380 on 26psi tune. Ragging on my car pretty hard to see what pops this stock motor. No breakage yet after 12k miles daily driven. Full boost several times a day, 1/8 runs, 1/4 runs, highway pulls, thrown several codes sorting out minor issues, and driven in all conditions including crushed gravel daily.
Even hammered it for a few miles to see how high my EGT would get. Pegged to 1800F with no ill effects, usually pulls got to 1600-1700 in a second or two then flatlined. Should really drop off the spare motor to the machinist so its ready when I succeed |

I get 14/21 and that is with 272 cams, GTX30, 91oct, full catless exh, open loop idle, P&P, ID1000's, etc. BTW - how can I load the specs of my motor, etc into my profile so I dont have to type them out all the time **Should note that the 14/21 was achieved on my 'econ mode' which is 310/278 for power numbers, I dont have gas mileage numbers on the higher power modes yet. My friend's 06 STI made 387whp on a dynopack and got about 17mpg mixed.
As far as the power level it was fast but it wasn't uncontrollable like some of the posts here say. Wasn't very hard to drive at all when I drove it. My 330whp Spec V was harder to drive with all the torque steer but even that wasn't that hard to drive. Then again I've been to the strip many times and autocross my car a decent amount. |

Dave's point about the uncontrollable power is very valid. You have to understand that his point depends on the driver. A "green" driver won't have the same ability to control the pull 400awhp has. Plenty of totaled WRX and STI out there with stock power already. Now up the power, chop a couple seconds off the 1/4 times and you've got a recipe for the tree mod.
Still the same issue with experienced drivers but the driver mod is more important with more power. |

good stuff
i can relate to this for the longest time ive wanted close to 400 but after spending close to 10gs on a rebuilt 2.5 forged pistons and a lot of bolt ons the cost just adds up. so what ever my car makes ill be happy.

A 400 hp subaru engine will probably only last one week.

Oh you're right! Subaru must have outsourced 95% of their engines. The other 5% were reserved for jackasses who can't change oil or drive below redline.
Seriously man plenty of us pushing well over 400whp, more like 500hp at the crank. Another month gone by and no signs of this 80k mile oem longblock letting go. Still daily driven at 420/380 to the tires. |
