How are you guys checking the trans dipstick? I put the scotty mix in a couple days ago and I filled it til it was showing just below full and then I checked it in my driveway the next day and it was just at the low mark. So today I put the car in the street which is pretty much flat, it was above full, wtf?
I had let it drain for like 3 hours before I put the scottys in and I put in about 3.5 quarts so I doubt its over filled.

FYI - NAPA can order you a ~$6 T70. These are being used on Ford truck brakes now....

If you have something with an even surface, thats ideal so the lubricant doesn't flow everywhere. On ramps the way the lubricant leaks is going to be unpredictable and it will eventually shift and some of it may not come out. Jackstands on a level surface, both raise to the same level, is ideal. Even more ideal is a lift. ...and best yet if you're a small guy like myself, then just crawl under there and the car will naturally be level. |

A little back on topic: Is there a more synchro friendly version of this? I just switched from unknown to Scotty's mix and I can hear an occasional (very quiet) grind into third and shifting to second is rather slow.

I just put this in my trans about 2 hours ago and have been driving the whole time since. I bought the car used and have NEVER been able to get into 1st without going into 2nd, then 1st. But instantly I was able to and with a fair amount of ease. I am hoping it will only get better after a few more miles and a few more days go by. This is awesome!!!!! -mike

I had grinding in 1st gear at a dead stop with the clutch pedal on the floor. I could never shift into 1st unless I was completely stopped as well. With the cocktail, I have NO grinding and can shift into 1st at 20 MPH if I rev match. I am another very satisfied customer. Thanks Uncle Scotty!

Ok...I've almost read this entire thread and it seems like this cocktail is pretty amazing, but if I didn't want to go to the effort of locating each of the different ingredients, what would the single best tranny fluid be that I could buy...if I'm not worried about saving every penny?...I'd rather just place one online order or go to one store and just be done with it. And by the way, I have a 04 WRX (5MT) with about 6K miles.
Thanks |

I couldn't get the LW shockproof.
So I got Heavy Shockproof and MT-90 2qts of each. The thing with the shockproof oils is their ability to coat. They stick and coat everything. The heavy coats so well in fact that if you add just what the tranny calls for (3. something quarts) and drive, it will read low later. I actually have a full 4 quarts in my tranny and my level is right on. There is that much coating the inside of the tranny case, gears, etc. I changed over because my 2nd gear stop engaging. A little too late to do it if you ask me. Pretty sure the syncho hub had failed. When I drained the oil it looked like sparkle paint; silver glitter everywhere. Put in this oil and I can now find second... most times. But it's just what I need to keep this tranny going until I can afford to get it fixed. |

I am trying to put together a kit with all of the necessary ingredients for those who can't find them. I won't know more until next week, but I will keep you posted.

I couldn't shift into first unless completely stopped either and would grind everytime I would shift into 2nd no matter what load. Switched to the cocktail and all my dreams came true! No grinds and shifts easily and effortlessly.
Uncle Scotty's Cocktail worked for me!!! |

Sorry...I'm reading an entire thread on tranny fluid, where else am I supposed to look? I figure the people who know the most about the subject are commenting in this thread. I just wanted to know what the best fluid for my car would be if I didn't want to go scavenging for 4 or 5 different things....why is everyone on this site so damn irritated all the time...if you don't want to be bothered with a question then you don't have to respond....it probably took more effort to reply the way you did rather than just giving a brand of fluid or saying nothing at all.

yaggi, the reason nobody can give you a straight answer as to which is the "best" single gear oil you can buy is because one simply doesn't exist. If you were to start your own thread regarding it or if you did a search you will only find replies such as "I really like X-brand X-weight oil!" or "X-brand worked really well for me!" But there will be so many different brands that people "have a good experience with" that your head will spin. To complicate matters further, about 1/3 of the replies to any given brand will be "X-brand sucks! My transmission b0rked because of it!!1!"
That said, people often have bad experiences with full synthetic gear oils in general. I, on the other hand, have had quite a good experience with Valvoline SynPower 75-90. Take that for what it's worth. And Uncle Scotty? His job is to add some flava to the boards. Don't worry about it, he doesn't bite. Ben |

Ok, so I changed my tranny oil out about 100 miles ago. My old fluid was really low! So I was glad I changed it. At first I didn't notice much difference, but now the car just feels waaaay smoother all around. Before it was also hard to shift into each gear, it would take awhile for the syncros to match, now it works great. Overall, it made my car just feel much smoother to drive.
