Default Shelby Super Cars Tuatara just ran 331 MPH

The pull from 200-300 MPH was insane. And having the car so stable that the driver can drive with one hand and check his belts at 200+ MPH.

Just wow.

Now my six year old is going to want one of these more than he does a Bugatti, can't wait to break the news to him.

The two way average is 316, the 331 is just the peak speed it hit in one direction; deceptively written as usual. Real talk though, 316 is no freaking joke.

Yeah, that 200-300 pull was just nuts. Im wondering if he went easier at the lower speeds so that the tires could reach appropriate temp before going HAM from 200-300mph.

That thing was so stable and smooth, he could have enjoyed his Starbucks Latte.

Interview with one of the designers.

He was there at the 330mph run, says the driver got out of the car and said, "Nope, not doing that ever again!" after the car jumped a lane due to 7mph crosswinds

Also note, the car supposedly does 250mph in a 1/2 mile run

I wish he had taken off with a good launch so we know what the 0-331 time is.

I wonder how much more speed is in that particular car though, with the way it was still pulling after 300mph I 'd imagine it's capable of more.

Probably. The question in my mind would be how much more can the tires take.

During the Smokingtire interview, they discuss how the driver accelerated in "Stages" to check and see how the car was operating at certain points and how conditions were effecting it.

yep, tires have been the limiting factor for top speed record attempt cars.

Im aware.

But when did supercars break 250? Much less 300?

I just never caught it.

Or was this it?

I think the Chiron and Konigzzzzzz were in the 260 range. But yes, this was a HUGE jump!

IIRC Buggati had a recent 304 or 305 record that was in contention.

It started in 2004 when the Koenigsegg CCR took the McLaren F1's 8 year held record (221mph) by hitting 241mph. The next year the original Bugatti Veyron debuted and that car is the one that answers your first question (252mph). The following 15 years or so has just been a revolving door of speed records being broken alternatingly by mainly SSC, Bugatti, and Koenigsegg (with the help of tire manufacturers).

Now it's pretty much out of hand, it's only a matter of time until someone dies. It feels like the three companies are now just racing to see who has a tire blowout that violently kills a test driver. The danger at those speeds is absurd.

I think Bugatti had stated they weren't going to keep going for records anymore for this very reason.

They will keep going for it. Only difference is it will be VR remote controlled in some form.

World's fastest RC car? Not sure if that brings the same wow factor.. something about trusting technology at the edge of life brings excitement to some.

In that case, I think Richard Hammond needs to be the official driver for all land production cars achieving a top speed record. He's nearly died twice, maybe 3 times. Only makes sense for him to go out that way.
