1. Rough idle at startup, feels like a cylinder or two is not working. Severe hesitation during acelleration.
2. While driving car it loosses all power for a split second like either fuel of spark has been cut off.

Didn't experience any problems driving car after check engine light illuminated. Check engine light turned itself off ~100 km later.

Dealership will flash ECU. Very easy, no arguing needed.

12000 km - (P0303) Misfire cylinder #3
15000 km - (P0303) Misfire cylinder #3
Westboro Auto Imports, Ottawa.

Both occured after having used the car for about 10-20km and then turning the car off and then restarting the car withing 10min of shutoff. Both times happened at idle and i did notice the car was idling a bit rough both times. Both times dealer reset ECU.

Last time (10/23/01) they told me it might have something to do with the "aftermarket" alarm system which is tied in somehow in some fashion to cylinder#3's wiring. They siad this could be causing the problem as it an aftermarket alarm (even though i ordered the car with the alarm and they either installed it themselves, or shipped it somehwere to have the alarm installed) They said the will be contacting Subaru to determine an appropriate course of action.

CEL on at around 5700

Codes: 0301 and 0303.
Dealer cleared codes and did 4 driving cycles. Said there wasn't any thing else wrong. That they were erroneous codes.
Dealer: Frederick Motor Co., Frederick MD

The CEL has come on 4 other times since.

once around 7000 ( I took off gas cap and then put it back on, light was gone when started it up again).

once around 8800 ( could not get it go off, so I tried the 4 key cycle)

once around 10000 ( again it would not go off. did the 4 key cycle).

and the last time was around 11500 ( this time around 11600 it went off after it had sat for awhile).

Unfortunately I didn't get the exact mileage and haven't had the codes pulled yet for the other 4 times.

what action the dealer took = service appt scheduled for 11-9-01 to have the ECU reflashed, said that SOA is so backed up reflashing the ECUs that they don't want to see it for a week. The dealer also stated that they have seen a few of the same problem with the 6cyl legacys. My wife is not pleased with the check engine light having been on, especially since the WRX was purchased to replace an Outback that she thought was a "death mobile".

CEL popped on while crusing at 60mph, scanned with pocketlogger.
Will call Carter this morning to see what the game plan is and how
they are addressing this problem. Hopefully they have gotten smart and have replacement ECU's instead of pulling the ECU and sending it away for reflashing which means no WRX for a while.

*~7000 miles, three times so far
*2nd time, P0303, Misfire - haven't checked for the 3rd time. This apparently was the only code stored, even though it was checked during the second CEL.
*Purchased at Dwyer, haven't returned for CEL
*A friend pulled the code while the CEL was on the 2nd time. All three times the CEL came on when the car was started hot, and operating less than 5 minutes. The CEL is on right now, but the first two times it went of after a couple driving cycles.

I did get the P0303 after hot-starting my car, but I had not been driving hard any time reasonably near that time (maybe not driving hard was the problem! )

Post Exxon-Mobil

Since Exxon now owns Mobil, I wonder if they'll keep separate gas refineries? (things that make you go "hmmm")

CEL ON: ~1000 mi 11/30 after KK meet driving around 70 mph on the Freeway, tank about 3/4 full
Code: P0453 (Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Circuit High)
Dealer: Irvine Subaru (only one open Sat, 12/1)
Dealer suggested poor quality gas and recommended Chevron and 76. Cleared code and test drove.

Filled up with Chevron 91 12/3. Light went off after fill up; CEL came back on after about 50 mi of driving (1200 mi), again on the highway. Taking it to the dealer Friday (next open appt).

Always used 91 oct. First fill up @ Shell, second @ Chevron.

UPDATE 12/7: Light was off, ASSAEL pulled code, got P0453, did emission test, found no defect.

UPDATE 12/10: Filled up gas with Shell (service director at ASSAEL said I can put any gas brand I want, as long its 91). Light came back on after about 50 mi. Took car to dlr on Tues. 12/11. Dlr claims there is short somewhere, and they need to keep car. Got Chevy Metro rental (just shoot me now) w NO POWER STEERING! I want them to fix the CEL, but I don't want to drive a POS metro.

UPDATE 12/13: Dlr called and told me something is loose in the ECU, so they ordered a new ECU. I'll get the WRX back till they get the part.

UPDATE: 12/27: New ECU is installed, 12/28 Check engine light is back on. Had dealer check it again!! This time they think it's a Fuel Pressure Sensor. New Part is ordered.

UPDATE: 1/14/02: Fuel Pressure Sensor part has arrived. 1/15: I took the car to the dealer. He quoted me 2-3 hours, but the technician says, "No Way! That sensor is in the fuel tank. We have to drop the rear driveshaft, and the fuel tank to get to it. It'll be at least a day to do it. The dealer didn't want to give me a rental for 2-3 hours, but agreed to get me a rental. Enterprise didn't have any Chevy Metros (thank the lord!) and so I got a Park Avenue. It's a far cry from the WRX, but it's nice. Hopefully this is the end of my CEL woes.

UPDATE: 1/26/02: The car hasn't been driven much because I'm driving my old MX6 to make sure stuff still works. CEL is back on today after putting gas and driving about 60 miles. AARRGH!! Those idiots at Assael are quite incompetent at fixing this problem. SOA is going to get an angry call from me Monday AM.

Date On: 12/01/01 (8367 miles - came on when I started car)
Date Off: 12/04/01 CEL reset (8409 miles)
Code: P1443
Dealer: Morristown Subaru
Action:

- Reset CEL and ordered new vent valve. They will let me know when it comes in. Service manager indicated that nearly all the WRXs they have sold generated this code. They have made SOA aware of it but to their knowledge SOA was not going to issue a recall.
- 12/10 : Reset eliminated CEL, dealer cleaned out evaporative canister and sealed with silicon. Found lots of cob webs in canister and hoses. Dealer said this was a common problem with Subarus. Retested ECU and found no further codes. Did not replace vent valve.
