It's nice, you'll relax easier. Yes i've got anxiety and I took it before bed to help me unwind.

Heh, good ole' Klonopin. I was on that for like 5 years, though I never took a high dose. It does work pretty well though.

It's pretty mild compared to stuff like Xanax or Adavan. It's effects are maybe a bit more akin to librium or valium then something like Xanax. It takes the edge off of the anxiety. It can tend to make you a bit tired/lethargic as well.

I'll pass this on to my girlfriend who is a pharmacy tech and could probably answer your question.

I have discovered that, because of my allergy to certain insect bites...mostly ants, and 'horse flys' and 'hay fever'...that ATARAX is a good one for me...
I have every'weird' side effect there is, it seems...and this one just makes me 'a little' sleepy.
My DR. and I tried 4-5, before landing on ATARAX.....I gotta get some more...I just realised I only got a couple left...DAMN...

Good luck, and keep your DR. informed of problems you have.
Most important is the $ex one, to me, anyway. I had a gf break up with me, because she thought I was 'getting some' on the side, and it was my 'blood pressure' pill that made me 'uninterested' in $ex....

Xanax or Adavan......mmmmmmm.........

I took it a couple of years ago. Makes you real tired. I hated feeling so tired all the time, I switched to something else.

ok I'm to second that..

I'm not going to say take it or not but it was a bad idea for me.. just make sure you have a doctor that knows you well enough and looks at your problem close enough to catch any other possible disorders or lack there of.

Klonopin messed me up big time about a year ago. Dr. prescribed a good dose to me. I think 1-2 grams a day as needed.

the initial effect that it gives you is decent but there are much better drugs out there and it really depends on your problem. 9 times out of 10 the problem with anxiety is can be mostly remedied by therapy.

Klonopin also made me feel worse after a period of time.. either I couldn't get enough of it to relax me or I was so relaxed I was lethargic. Hell its closly related to some date rape drugs iirc.

my biggest mistake was not going to see a therapist before I went to go see a pyschiatrist. It ruined a good 2 almost 3 years of my life.

Brad
drugs are bad... mmmmkay?

Dude, please take this response very seriously. I was addicted to the stuff for three years. It helped with my anxiety but it was just a cover up, also your body builds a tolerance to it so you need to take more and more. I tried to get off it about 6 times.....it is HELL trying to get off this if youve become addicted and arent on anyting else. Finally I got on a good SSRI (effexor) and after a few months I was able to ween off klonapin w/ no problems, then after a few more months I stopped taking effexor w/ no problems.

I do not condemn the use of this drug, but really caution it. But I do think it is ridiculous for a doctor to put you on klonapin w/ out an SSRI or something along those lines. Klonapin is not long lasting, it will most likely stop a chance of anxiety for a few hours and then you have to take it again, keeping it constantly in your blood steam.

Klonapin may be your best choice. But I would do some serious searching before you make that choice. Talk to some other doctors and get some more options. I spend years wishing I had dealt w/ my issues in the beginning rather than covering them up and making them worse.

good luck

Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor,

lots of drugs fall under this category:

paxil
prozac
effexor
etc etc,

they are for depression/anxiety, i recommend trying some and being patient.

Correct, except Effexor. That has actions at the serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine receptors... thus, it is not a SSRI.

Back to the point of this thread, Klonepin is probably one of the better benzodiazepines (BZD) to use for GAD due to its long half-life, but you can still get BZD addiction and dependence. However, BZD's are falling out of favor because of abuse potential and potentially fatal interaction with alcohol.

Back to Effexor--this drug is first line now for GAD, along with Buspar, and SSRI's. In my personal experience, Effexor tends to work the best for GAD, but the others work well also.

PM me if you have any questions about any of these drugs or your therapy.

what are they currently using as mainstream treatment of anxiety and paranoia?

Brad
just curious

edit: I'm not reffering to paranoid scitzophrenia(sp?) just mild paranoia? my cousin was taking stuff for scitzo and it didn't work so they tried treating it with anti-depressents

Anxiety and paranoia are symptoms, not diseases or disorders. Drug therapy is tailored towards diseases/disorders and not to particular symptoms.

Schizophrenia is usually treated with an antipsychotic (also known as a neuroleptic). The current trend is use of 2nd generation atypical antipsychotics (aka "atypical atypicals"), such as Seroquel and Geodon. If the schizophrenia is refractory to that treatment, usually Clozaril is the next antipsychotic used.

If the patient has psychosis secondary to a major depressive episode, SSRI's are often used. As the depression clears, the psychosis also clears.
