The speakers aren't horrible for what they are, but the magnet on the stockers are about the diameter of your thumb and maybe 3/4" long. Not much there to keep the cone in check. One of the Kicker speakers are heavier than all four of the originals by a significant amount. The stockers really are a weak link. For PNP, the Subaru upgrades are pretty decent. With adapters and a little more work, aftermarket is probably better and perhaps less expensive as well.

I rarely play the head unit louder than 28 (usually at 16-24), and that's with the rears shut off, EQ and loudness turned off, and bass at 0. The 6501s are comfortable at that power level, but the head unit doesn't have much left in reserve.

If you're listening at 30-32 with the default rollercoaster EQ, I'm surprised the speakers lasted as long as they did.

If you don't want to drill holes, chop off connectors or route wires, the Kicker pieces are it.
I just bought a pair of the Polk DB651 off Amazon. When you say "effort" what are you referring to? Is there soldering and drilling involved to install the speakers?

I plan on installing these sometime in the next few weeks with some sound deadening materials I purchased also. Thanks for any suggestions.

You'll need some speaker spacers: http://www.subaruaudio.net/subaru-speaker-spacers/

I drilled when I installed mine. No big deal.

I used these connectors just in case I want to throw the stock speakers back in when I sell the car (yes they work perfectly in the Impreza):

I was referring to the db6501 component set.

Thanks!

No clearance issues with the window? I'm assuming I don't need the spacers that Angelus911 suggested.

Thanks again.

Can't hurt to use them if you don't want to drill, but you don't need them.

What he said.... There's no clearance issues, I just made sure the speaker wires were out of the way.

Sorry about suggesting the speaker spacers, I thought I've read of others on here who have used them. I bought them anyways just to make installation easier (so I won't have to drill holes into the door). I think I paid $30 for them and the guy who makes them is a member on this forum, so for peace of mind and installation ease, it made sense to me.

I made my own spacers, but for mounting reasons rather than needing the extra depth.

Nothing wrong with using spacers. This is the first car I've drilled, and it was only because I wanted to get it done NOW, rather than be patient and wait for spacers to arrive.

I have tweeters up in the dash, but I don't know if that means I have the upgraded speakers or not. Are the stock speakers coaxial?

Premium trims and above have the 6 speaker package (tweeters in the dash)

Unless you specifically ordered the kicker upgrade (I did for the tweeters only) they are just the factory installed ones

So the 6 speaker package is not necessarily the upgraded speaker package?

They make the install much easier, ensure clearance at the window, and don't put the screws at a weird angle like the adapters that come with the Polks.

Try turning your stereo off pressing an holding the 1&4 button. Double tap tune and it should say through mode. Made my speakers sound a lot better an not crack as hard under bass.

Btw http://www.subaruaudio.net/subaru-speaker-spacers/

It's $55 for front and rear speaker spacers with the awesome NASIOC discount =)

Just ordered mine! I know they're not 100% needed, but I didn't want to drill into the metal.

I ordered the spacers from him for front and rear as well as a dash tweeter adapter for aftermarket tweeters. I bought all new speakers and the adapters and it still cost much less than buying the speaker upgrade kit. (this was in a '13 btw)

^What's the tweeter adapter like? Is it needed for the Polk DB6501 component install?

Doing this made a difference in how my stock speakers sound. I can live with them a little longer till they are replaced with something better! Thanks!!
