Default Hyundai confirms development of new ‘halo’ sports car

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hyundai...alo-sports-car

A new halo model that will sit within Hyundai’s N division is in the pipeline

Hyundai’s new N performance brand will develop its own standalone vehicle, the company’s Vice President of high-performance and motorsport Thomas Schemera has confirmed.

The launch of the i30 N hatch and fastback, along with the Velsoter N, which will not go on sale in the UK, is the “completion of the first phase of N vehicles,” according to Schemera.

The next step in the development of the N brand is a bespoke, standalone model. Schemera added: “The whole idea is to strengthen the Hyundai brand, to bring more emotion.

“I can tell you Albert Biermann [Hyundai engineering boss] and myself are interested in hot things and have some ideas in the pipeline for a halo model - rest assured we are coming up with something.”

Auto Express understands there is still an internal debate going on within the company as to what the ‘halo’ model should be; whether that takes form as a two-seater sports car or performance saloon like the Kia Stinger is still being discussed. The model, as a result, is still several years away from production.

Biermann has also spelled out plans to be involved with the development of new models from the very beginning so the process of engineering Hyundai’s core products into N models is streamlined. That process is expected to begin with the next-generation i20 supermini.

Hyundai launched the N brand with the RN30 concept (pictured) at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Default Hyundai N division 'halo' car could be AWD and Hybrid

Quote:
Hyundai N division 'halo' car could be AWD and hybrid
All-wheel-drive, petrol-electric power under consideration for performance brand flagship, according to bosses.

Hyundai is favouring an all-wheel-drive, petrol-electric powertrain for its upcoming ‘halo’ car, according to sources at the Korean firm.

Set to represent the pinnacle of the N brand model hierarchy, the mystery range-topper was confirmed by bosses in July last year.

Company insiders have suggested to Autocar that hybridisation is currently on the cards, alongside a price positioning that would likely undercut the £115,000 Polestar 1 as well as other electrified performance GTs.

Vice president of Hyundai’s high-performance vehicle and motorsport division, Gyoo-Heon Choi, said: “A halo car remains in our plans. It won’t come for a while yet but we know we have to make one. We are now looking at some alternative powertrains and some different options on what kinds of vehicle we might deliver and when.” Hyundai N brand insiders suggest that it’s unlikely that any halo car will be on sale before 2022.

“We’re developing more powerful combustion engines for future cars,” Choi went on, “but also more powerful electric powertrains; experimental performance fuel cells, too. Conventional four-wheel drive is an option for the [halo] car, but it is very old technology. I would prefer to think about a front-engined hybridised platform with a rear-mounted electric motor; it’s an appealing direction for us.”

Klaus Köster, director of high performance vehicles at Hyundai’s European Technical Centre, added more detail about the halo car, saying: “Our challenge is to make the product affordable but also credible in the way we define any Hyundai N car. It cannot only be capable of just a handful of laps of a track before losing power – but also cannot be pitched at a price of hundreds of thousands of euros. The people who buy those kinds of cars are not Hyundai customers; not yet, at any rate.”

Even so, through a combination of Hyundai’s existing N-brand four-cylinder performance powertrain driving the front axle and the Kona Electric’s electric powertrain at the rear, the potential already exists for a four-wheel-drive Hyundai N-car with close to 500 horsepower.

“Ultimately, we will only ever respond to customer demand,” Köster added, “and we will only ever deliver something fully resolved, with a driving experience we’re really happy with. So we must be careful that, whatever we do, we create a car that N-brand customers will buy.”

The chosen bodystyle for Hyundai’s halo car has yet to be revealed. Insiders have previously suggested that a high-performance four-door, in the same vein as the Kia Stinger GT, and a two-door sporting coupé are the most likely candidates.

The N division, headed by former BMW M boss Albert Biermann, was established to produce high-performance versions of the Korean firm’s line-up, in the style of Volkswagen’s R brand or Mercedes-Benz AMG.

The brand has been testing a mid-engined, Veloster-based ‘RM16 N’, a component test mule that is thought to be part of the development process for the halo model.

Looks great in camo. Too bad it will likely be released with lack of wide body and more generic looking.

Every single time these prototypes come rolling out (see Supra), people love it and say "hell yes, i'd buy that." Then the manufacturer releases a dulled down version that leaves you flaccid.

This is one place I am not sure that will be true.

If they make a limited run of less than 1K, they can make it as wild as they want.

Test mule is power train not bodystyle. A high dollar AWD hatch as a halo is not a good idea. A sexy two or four door is the better option.

While I'm not going to disagree, most mfrs don't apply camo like that to test mules... Camo like that is reserved to hide body lines of future releases. Maybe those photos are of a totally different car (ie, not the halo)?

Why can’t one company be different? Maybe if someone would make that super hot hatch it’d cascade down and lead to more performance options for hatch fans instead of us having to pick peanuts outta dookie.

It will be a global car though, and just cause Merica isn't big on hatches (which isn't necessarily true BTW) doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.

I have read very good things about the Veloster N, it seems like Hyundai is on the right track here (no pun intended).

I'd buy a Hyundai super hatch.

Default Hyundai Plans To Turn The Hypercar Market Upside Down With New Halo Car

Quote:
Quote:
Hyundai: Rimac Collab Will Yield Game-Changing Electric Sports Car

These two automakers could be a match made in heaven.

Take one of the world's most successful automakers and pair it with a company with plenty of forward-thinking vision. What do you get? Apparently, a game-changing all-electric halo sports car that could become a halo car for the Hyundai N performance brand.

We're very excited about the prospects related to the recently announced partnership between Korean automaker Hyundai and Croatia-based supercar maker Rimac Automobili. This is primarily due to the fact that Hyundai's European design chief Thomas Beurkle revealed that an electric, high-performance halo car is in the works.

Hyundai/Kia will invest some 80 million euros (~$90 million USD) in Rimac. This is all part of an initial push that will lead to a Hyundai N electric sports car and potentially a Kia fuel- cell vehicle. Beurkle told Automotive News Europe:

"We have to speak to people who want to be advanced, who want to lead in terms of taste and style and also being less conventional. It will be a real challenge for the design department to work on this."
However, it's still very early in the game. Thus, no official decisions have been established at this point. The article admits that Beurkle didn't specify if this car would be a true hypercar/supercar, or something more mainstream.

Despite the fact that this partnership is brand new, and its publicized plans are sparse right now, what do you think? We'd love to hear from you in our new comments section below.
Hyundai says electric sports car developed with Rimac will be 'game changer'

The electric sports car that Hyundai is developing in collaboration with Rimac will be a "game changer" for the South Korean automaker and will influence the way it creates cars, said Hyundai's head of European design, Thomas Beurkle.

Hyundai Motor announced on Tuesday that it was investing 80 million euro to take an undisclosed stake in Croatian electric sportscar developer Rimac

Two models will result from the investment: a sports car for Hyundai's N performance subbrand and a fuel cell car, likely for Kia.

The new sports car will be a benchmark that would "influence the thinking in the engineering teams in the design teams in the marketing teams," Beurkle told Automotive News Europe at a Hyundai UK press event on Wednesday.

"You could say it is a marketing instrument on the outside but it's also a game changer on the inside," he said.

The design of the car needs to make it very clear it has a different drivetrain, rather have onlookers think it's powered by a big combustion engine, Beurkle said.

"We have to speak to people who want to be advanced, who want to lead in terms of taste and style and also being less conventional," he said. "It will be a real challenge for the design department to work on this."

Beurkle said no decisions had been made as to which of Hyundai's design centers globally would design the car, although he pointed out that traditionally its studios in Europe, Korea and the U.S. compete to have their design picked for new models.

He would not be drawn on whether the Rimac/Hyundai car would be more a hypercar priced more toward Ferrari territory in the manner of the Ford GT or would be more attainable.

Rimac is best known for electric hypercars, including its recently unveiled C2, which produces about 2,000hp.

The Croatian automaker also has a partnership with Automobili Pininfarina, owned by the Mahindra group of India, to supply the high-performance electric powertrain and battery technology to the Pininfarina Battista, a supercar unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March.

Rimac was also responsible for adding an electric drivetrain to the classic Jaguar E-type used at last year's wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and is also supplying the battery-electric system for Aston Martin's Valkyrie hybrid electric supercar.

Last year Porsche bought a 10 percent stake in Rimac.

Hyundai was impressed with Rimac's work balancing high-performance with the need to keep battery weight down while ensuring a usable range.

"That's the big obstacle on performance EVs at the moment," said Tyrone Johnson, the ex-Ford performance engineer recently hired as head of vehicle development at Hyundai Europe. "Rimac is doing things are a bit novel with respect the amount of energy you can store and the mass of these vehicles. That's part of the reason for the cooperation," he said.

Hyundai plans to offer 44 electrified models by 2025, targeting annual sales of about 1.67 million units. Kia aims to have 19 electrified vehicles in its range by 2022, comprising six full-electric cars, six plug-in hybrids, six full hybrids and one fuel cell vehicle.

New Hyundai N sports car 2021: What we know so far about South Korea's Porsche Cayman rival
Hold onto your hats: Hyundai is preparing to take on Porsche with a mid-mounted, electrified sports car.

It sounds crazy but when you consider the impact the i30 N has had on the hot-hatch market and Hyundai's investment in electric hypercar creators Rimac, it may not be as outlandish as it first sounds.

The South Korean brand signalled its intent to get serious about performance cars when it poached Albert Beirmann from BMW's M Division to head up the N project before promoting him to oversee all performance cars across Hyundai, Kia and Genesis.

To be clear, this isn't speculation on our part, Hyundai has made it crystal clear this is its plan. In announcing its investment in Rimac in May, the media statement explained the reasoning, reading: "The companies will work closely together to develop prototypes for an electric version of Hyundai Motor's N brand midship sports concept car and a high-performance fuel-cell electric vehicle with the intent to bring them to market at a later time."

Project RM

Hyundai began telegraphing its plans with the RM14 concept way back at the 2014 Busan motor show when it modified a standard Veloster by putting the engine behind the driver - the first of four 'Racing Midship' concepts that have been rolling research labs, according to the company. RM15 saw more experimentation with new construction materials and techniques, while RM16 was focused on aerodynamics.

The most recent version, RM19, combined all three elements and a more powerful engine, taken directly from the i30 N TCR racing car.

However, the production version will likely feature a hybrid powertrain, combining the company's successful turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit with (likely) a Rimac-built electric motor. That will not only provide extra power, but it's also tipped to feature all-wheel drive and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to boot.

The most recent version, RM19, combined all three elements and a more powerful engine. The most recent version, RM19, combined all three elements and a more powerful engine.

N hero

While Hyundai has experimented with the Veloster as the basis for the RM concepts, this new model won't be based on an existing car. Instead it will be a standalone model, designed to be a halo for the entire N range. Think of it as Hyundai's answer to the Mercedes-AMG GT, albeit on a more affordable scale.

While Hyundai has plans to expand N with an i20-based model, Kona and likely next-gen Tucson as well as the facelifted i30 due in 2020, a bespoke N model would be a major signal of intent by the South Korean carmaker.

The expected specifications of this hybrid hero would pitch Hyundai against the likes of the Alpine A110, Alfa Romeo 4C, Lotus Elise and even the Porsche 718 Cayman.

Rimac investment

Every car company is investing in electrification in some way, shape or form, but Hyundai Motor Group's (both Hyundai and Kia) decision to take a €80 million ($130m) stake in Rimac is a clear signal of intent. Other investors in the Croation company include Porsche, because Rimac specialises in ultra-high performance cars.

It's upcoming Rimac C_Two boasts claimed performance figures including 1408kW of power, 2300Nm of torque, a top speed of 412km/h and a 0-60mph time of 1.85secs as well as a 650km range. That's performance well beyond anything Hyundai has ever offered but the transition to electrification creates an opportunity for the brand to move into previously uncharted territory.

Even hot hatches were new space for Hyundai three years ago, so as bold as an electrified mid-mounted sports car may sound, it's well within the realms of the company's capabilities now.

"We want to build high-performance vehicles that are not only fast and powerful but also meet the highest expectations of our customers as the car of their dreams," explained Thomas Schemera, executive vice-president and head of Hyundai Motor Group's product division at the time of the announcement. "Our goal is to popularise electric vehicles and to create social value through world-class technology and innovation in performance."

There's a huge wall of text, and a lot of it is conflicting... This is out of the portion about the high performance EV...

This is where manufacturers will fail. Early adopters, like prius and leaf drivers, wanted to be seen. If they want to try to steal sales of those cars, okay... But if they want to tap into the larger car market, they're going to need to stop this whole kitchy EV design thing...

Hyundai’s Geneva Concept a “Prophecy” of its EV Plans

The aptly named Hyundai Prophecy is expected to serve as an automotive crystal ball, teasing the direction the Korean carmaker’s electrification program is heading.

Hyundai Motor Co. is making big plans for electrifying its line-up, the automaker recently announcing plans to invest $87 billion during the next five years while bringing 44 battery and fuel-cell vehicles to market — and the concept vehicle it plans to debut at the Geneva Motor Show early next month will serve as something of a prophesy of what’s coming.

Make that “Prophecy,” the show car adopting the British spelling. The automaker has released this first teaser image and suggests that it reveals the concept’s take on the “Sensuous Sportiness” design language that has already begun showing up on new products like the 2020 Hyundai Sonata.

The announcement leaves us with plenty of unanswered questions, however. The first centers around the battery drive technology underpinning the Hyundai Prophecy concept. The Korean carmaker has an extensive internal development program underway, one that has provided products like the battery-based Kona EV and hydrogen-powered Nexo. But it also has an ongoing development partnership with Croatian supercar company Rimac, as well as a deal with announced this month with EV start-up Canoo.

Hyundai announced an investment in Rimac – the Croatian maker of the Concept_Two electric hypercar – in 2019.

For the moment, we’re left guessing as to the power source for Prophecy. It appears all but certain that the EV will use batteries rather than fuel-cell technology. And the emphasis on its sporty design appears to back up what a couple well-placed observers believe: that the Geneva concept will be the first clear showing of what’s to come from Hyundai’s relationship with Rimac.

The smaller company is based in a country not typically known for its automotive prowess, Rimac the eponymous effort of entrepreneur Mate Rimac who began tinkering with EVs when he was barely 20.

“Rimac is an innovative company with outstanding capabilities in high-performance electric vehicles,” Hyundai Vice Chairman Euisun Chung said in May 2019, when he announced plans to invest $90 million in the Croatian enterprise.

The Kona EV is one of several electrified models Hyundai fully developed in-house.

Hyundai isn’t alone, Porsche one of several other automakers that have invested in or otherwise linked up with Rimac during the last several year.

While Hyundai’s Chung called Rimac “the ideal partner for us,” the Korean manufacturer has remained vague about precisely what it expects to get out of the alliance. Adding to the confusion, Hyundai this past week announced it also is teaming up with EV maker Canoo. The California-based start-up recently unveiled the Canoo Canoo – really – a vehicle that looks like an SUV with its front end sliced off.

Hyundai is expected to use the underlying, skateboard-style platform for an electric vehicle expected to be similar in size to the current Hyundai Accent. But the flexible architecture eventually could show up in other products.

Hyundai has also teamed up with a third EV developer. Last month it invested $110 million in UK-based Arrival. That start-up will focus on commercial vehicles, however.

Hyundai has also invested in California EV start-up Canoo, with plans to use its skateboard system for an Accent-sized battery-car.

“The name,” the automaker says in a news release, “reflects the concept’s purpose, defining the direction of future Hyundai designs, while establishing itself as a design icon for Hyundai’s EV line-up.”

What we see is a boat-tail design, the rear quarter panels flowing into an integral spoiler and pixelated taillights.

“”Prophecy” does not follow trends. It accentuates timeless beauty that will stand the test of time,” said SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s global design chief. “Its iconic design stands to expand Hyundai’s design spectrum toward even broader horizons.”

There’s a bit of Porsche Taycan to the look, or perhaps a hint of what the German automaker’s planned all-electric version of its Macan SUV might look like. And, intriguingly, Rimac is widely believed to be participating in that development project.

We hope to get more answers in the coming weeks, and certainly lean still more when the Hyundai Prophecy makes its debut at Geneva’s PALExpo convention center on March 3rd. The Korean maker is expected to expand upon its electrification plans during its news conference and we’d be surprised if Prophecy were the only model it rolls out that day.

Hyundai hired engineers away from BMW. They're investing in EV. They're releasing nice cars under the Genesis brand.

I'm liking the chances of an affordable EV sports car in the near future.

Just stick the veloster pp engine in a normal body with a decent quality interior. Offer it with a manual and the supposedly coming dct.

Default Wild mid-engined Hyundai sports car spotted

Quote:
Quote:
Korean car-maker looks set to launch a production version of its gloriously unhinged RM19 concept, and it's rumoured to get 300kW of hybrid power

Hyundai is pressing ahead with its plans to launch a flagship mid-engined sports car that will see it challenge rivals like the Toyota GR Supra and even the Porsche Cayman.

Captured for the first time on the back of a flatbed truck by Korean car blog Bobaedream, the prototype sports ‘MR23T’ graphics emblazoned down the side of the mutilated Veloster N body.

Believed to be an official Hyundai test vehicle, rather than a DIY backyard creation, the mule pictured here features the same wide front wheel-arches and boxy rear fenders as the original RM19 concept, plus three large air-vents carved into the rear bumper to aid cooling.

According to reports, the prototype is said to be running around with an all-new 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain – hence the MR23T name – that adds an additional electric motor to boost total power to around 300kW.

It’s not known if the RM19 remains rear-drive, or if the electric motor drives the front axle, but it’s expected to be the former.

Hyundai has already hinted at a 0-100km/h dash of “less than four seconds”, while also touting “supercar-level handling balance and low-polar-moment-of-inertia agility for outstanding connection to the tarmac at all speeds and driving conditions” for the production version of its RM19.

Aiding the hybrid powertrain’s development, last year Hyundai bought a $90 million ($A150m) stake in Rimac.

It’s thought the Croatian pure-electric hypercar-maker will develop the RM19’s battery pack, inverters and control modules.

For production, it’s thought the RM19 will drop its butchered Veloster look in favour of a bespoke sports car body more in keeping with a Cayman fighter.
