Default So i'm supposed to goto jamaica on sunday....

Yeah, getting hitched on saturday afternoon!

Supposed to fly down to Jamaica on sunday morning for 9 days of fun.....er....Hurricane relief work at Grand Lido Negril.

I paid for it on ym american expess blue like 6 months ago......so I am hoping that I can at least get my money back and get a voucher for the airlines....but I'm pretty sure we're going to either end up not going on our honeymoon or it will be craptastic.....

Any experiences?

we're staying accross the street from Hedo! But I think I am going to try and get my money back ASAP seeing as how 7 mile beach was pretty much destroyed and there is a lot of flooding/mud slides. They still haven't even opened the airport!

I worked at a resort on the West Coast of Florida that was closed down for about 2-weeks after Hurricane Charley. We refunded everyone who had paid deposits or pre-paid their stays for that time period. If you decide not to go and have any trouble with the airline or hotel directly, check what AMEX's policy is and dispute the charges through them. AMEX tends to side with the members in instances like this.

Also, try calling the airline to see what their policy is. For the hotel, is it a chain? If so, try calling their "main" reservation number. They should have some information on the condition of the hotel/resort and when they might re-open. Just remember to be patient when calling since everyone else is trying to call and some people "just don't get it." As an example, after Hurricane Charley I spent a little over 48 hours without electricity and phone. Once we got some services and we were able to access some of our guest information at the resort, I began to make calls (from my home phone because the resort still didn't have power or phones) to guests to let them know that the resort was closed and we wouldn't be able to accommodate them. I can't begin to tell you the number of RUDE ******** I dealt with who couldn't understand that an act of GOD had closed the resort, that we had no electric, no phone, and were under a "boil water" advisory. All they could do was blame me for ruining their vacations. (Please don't be one of these people!)

wow you scheduled your honeymoon in a resort in a prime hurricane region in the middle of hurricane season??? And now you want a refund when they actually got one? I hope they DON'T give you your money back. Why do you think the rates are lower down there right now???

Anyway, that's enough of me being a dick, but as for your vacation, sure it won't be AS nice as it might have been, but it will still be fun, NO ONE will be there, and it will be an absolute adventure.

GO ANYWAY!

I just got an email from our vacation planner. He said that the island did not suffer near as much damage as it could have. The power and phones are being restored as we speak and they are apparently going to continue with our current plans.

I'm still concerned that we'll end up eating MREs and that all the fun activities will get canceled. This is carp.

I planned and paid for this trip like six months ago. At the time I wasn't thinking about the weather and what not. We just really wanted a honeymoon to remember. I'll probably try and fight it to get our money back. This whole wedding process sucks.

We honeymooned in Jamaica. It was awesome. The last day we ate breakfast with a couple from TX. They were going to be there for ten days. They were going to have their wedding ceremony the day after we left. The day we left a hurricane Gordon was blowing in. We barely got out. I wonder what happened with their wedding.

again, you planned this during hurricane season, you shouldn't get your money back.

But as I said go anyway and have a great time. The people at the resort will cater to your every need because you'll be the only people there. You will still have a great time even if it's for other reasons, but I wouldn't recommend calling and asking for your money back because their seasons are set up this way for a reason. There is a huge price drop during summer because it's hotter than balls and it's hurricane season. For those 2 reasons a lot of people avoid making plans and or only go last minute to avoid this... The only person you can get upset with is if you used a travel agent and they didn't warn you, then speak with them, but don't call the resort. They need the money right now so there's no way they should consider letting you off the hook... Be realistic. Yes it sucks, but IMHO it should be a lot of fun.

Did you book a air/hotel package through an agent? If so, you'll have to deal with them. I'd push to change locations if I were you. It can take months to years for a small island country to recover from a hurricane. It's your honeymoon, you don't want to a bunch of closed restaurants, beaches and attractions. Nevermind closed roads and spotty power.

If you booked inedpendently, call the airline now. Usually, they give you an opportunity to back out in cases like this and hotels usually only need 24-48 hours to cancel without penalty.

Personally, I'll never book a package because any changes are near impossible.

I was in Jamaica on my honeymoon when Ivan hit. I figured out then that hurricane insurance is a huge racket, because it only applies if your vacation is cut short because of the hurricane. This means that if your travel agency sits on their ass and does nothing to get you out before the storm hits then the insurance company also doesn't have to reimburse you.

I could picture them high-fiving over champagne while I was lying in a room with no power with a mattress in front of the sliding-glass balcony door in case it shattered.
