Default Need help connecting utec to lap top

I have a utec on my o5 wrx
i finally got an adapter for the serial cable extending from the utec to make it a usb so that i can upload the stage 3 map from my laptop(it dosent have the right serial port in it). i was using my home pc before and using a 9v to power the ecu last time i uploaded my maps. So when i go to connect the laptop for the first time i can not get the utec main black screen to pop up on hyperterminal. I have had no problems before and even followed the instructions on the manual step by step just to be sure. The only thing i can think is that in the manual it says to set the port connection to "com1" but the only options my lap top gives my from the drop down menu that are even close is com3. Also another thing that might be the problem is that i am connectong through the usb this time and not the serial port so i might have to change the connections, some how?
Hopefully i was clear enough on my problem and i would aprreciate any suggestions so that i don't have to unistall the utec again and use the 9v again

what you need to do is go to your my computer icon, right click on it, then go to properties, then go under hardware, device manager and then find out what the com port is on your usb that you are connected to, it should say something along the lines of "usb to serial converter (com3)" whatever is in the ()'s is the com port you want to connect to.

PM me if you have any issues

Make sure you have to USB to serial adapter plugged into your USB port of your computer before you look at Device Manager, otherwise it will not show up.

Then, open HyperTerminal Properties and point the app to connect to the proper port.

Did you try hitting the Esc key in HyperTerminal? That usually will get you to the UTEC menu.

Or any UTEC command. Sometimes the buffer in hyper terminal gets confused, and hitting a UTEC command fixes that.

Also, make sure you have the correct drivers for your converter. I remember my Belkin connector needed drivers (which it didn't come with) before it would run.

They are buried somewhere in the bowels of the Belkin site. It takes me a solid hour to find the damn things. You have to find the product page for the adaptor (it'll help alot if you know the model number), and then there should be a link to driver downloads on it. However, it's just files and not an installer, so you have to manually uninstall the defualt USB device that windows installs (go to the device manager and look for the new USB device that pops up when you plug it in if you can't find which thing to uninstall), and then the next time you plug it in windows should ask if it can install new hardware, and you tell it to install from the folder containing the files that you downloaded from Belkin.

Yeah, it's a big pain in the ass, and I have no idea why they don't tell you you need to do it.
