Default Downpipe Selection

I'm looking to purchase a downpipe for my 2011 wrx hatch. I plan on getting the downpipe coated so I been taking that into consideration. What downpipe should I get? Also I have a Cobb catback

Cobb
Or
CNT catless
Or
Grimmspeed catless or catted (once they make it)

First you should decide on catted or catless, then figure out which ones mate with your catback (or get an adapter).

The new Grimmspeed one looks really nice, I've been very happy with my Cobb one though.

Is there a difference in performance from cobb bellmouth design to grimmspeed divorced design?

Dear lord, please do a search! This has been covered enough times to earn its own sticky! Unabomber authored it. It will have all the info you need.

If that isn't enough, go for a Cobb catted bellmouth dp, because the bell-part is investment cast = long life/durability.

As for the coating, go with Swain Tech white lightening coating, or nothing at all. It is a genuine ceramic coating, not a tinted paint with some ceramic material mixed in.

Run no downpipe since you cannot utilize the search function.

I came in here expecting the normal crap Nasicoc (and I) give people for not searching. I did not come in here to learn something new. I had never thought of Swain Tech for coating exhaust. I had heard the name, never thought of their ceramic coating though. Thanks for that car_freak. Do you have any personal experience running that coating?

Found the estimate downpipes at $40 per ft.
http://swaintech.com/race-coatings/a...s-price-sheet/

Now what would be cheaper, going used and getting their coating or buying brand new and their coating.
"Used parts can be coated. Stripping paint, rust or a previous coating may require an additional charge." Once I decide to go stage 2 I may be giving them a call.

Yes I have a little experience with it. I was clued into it about 10 years ago by Sport Compact Car magazine. Sadly, their plug was pulled several years ago. Very techy mag with lots of independant testing and imperical data and engineers moonlighting as writers. Www.Motoiq.com is the online reincarnation, and I. LOVE. THAT. SITE.

Mike Kojima used it all over the engine in his beast of a Z32TT.

Anyway, I had my Cobb 625 uppipe coated for a little under $70 total. Only have 8k miles on it at this point and haven't taken any temp measurements yet, but I fully expect it to outlast the chassis.

I have firsthand experience with SwainTech. I swear by their White Lightning coating. I can't compare spool time to myself, but 750-1000 rpms faster than a same car, roughly same mods, same fuel, but uncoated header and up pipe. HOWEVER...I don't see much if any benefit to coating the downpipe. The ONLY thing that I could see it helping with is underhood temps and heatsoak. Even then, a turbo blanket would be better.

The benefit is that you are keeping heat (i.e. energy) in the exhaust flow, keeping the gas column velocity higher than if the pipe was uncoated.

If cost were no object and all out performance was the OP's only goal, I would have suggested coating from the manifold to the exhaust tip...

There are theoretical benefits, whether or not that would net you any measurabe gains, I can't say.

Another benefit of coating the downpipe is to protect the passenger's side DOJ boot. I've seen a lot of Subarus of many generations with torn boots near the dp, even with the stock exhaust/dp. There is just a TON of heat in that area. Anything helps, coatings, wraps, heat shields, etc. some more effectivly than others.

I agree that if cost was no object, coat the entire exhaust, but I just can't see that helping anywhere NEAR as much as coating up to the turbo.

Darwin Award winners, for sure...

As for coating, before the turbo will help get the energy to the turbo, but there IS an advantage to coating after the turbo too. Once again, it's all about the column velocity...

Thanks drew and car freak for all the info. Have you guys ever run anything coated by grimmspeed? Wonder how the two would compare.

Grimmspeed is just powder coating. No heat retention at all. Just for looks.

Essentially the same thing. They don't have a truly heat retentive coating, yeah, it may do a little just as painting an intercooler black may dissappaite(sp) heat better. In theory, it works, but in practice...well there won't be much difference at all. I will ONLY get my exhaust coated by Swain. If I had known that they also coat turbos when I had more time for my motor, I would've sent it to them. I also want to have them coat my intercooler.

Just to give you guys an idea of how much faith in their coating I have, I would GLADLY spend $800+ to have JUST my header, up pipe, and turbo coated by them. That stuff is pure magic. I ended up spending about $320 for coating my header and up pipe. That's the best $320 I've spent on my car.

These header coatings are shiny or colored and really will not improve performance, but they do look nice. Swain Tech Coatings is the only company to offer a true insulating thermal barrier for exhaust parts. This external thermal barrier is applied approximately .012***8243; thick, has a white matte finish and does a tremendous job of keeping the heat inside of the pipes to improve scavenging and reduce under hood temperatures.

About halfway down the page right after the pic of a coated exhaust manifold and muffler.

Invest a small fortune into coatings.

And anything that isn't spark silver is ugly. Lightning red... more like period red.
