SWAY BARS FOR STI

Default The STI JDM Pink springs vs Prodrive 04-05 springs , owners give your feedback.

After spending some time in both our 04 STi and 05 shop STi cars, one with pinks the other with Prodrive springs, I think the Prodrives have improved alot. But I still prefer the JDM STi "Pinks" over anything. The pinks lower the car 20mm and after 46k on my set , I was sad to see them go. I think for the new STi owner and or the occasional track day and or autocrosser, these work very well. But dont discount the PRodrives, as they have made some changes to the STi version springs and they are great as well.

Myles (or other readers with this experience),
How would you compare/contrast the advantages/disadvantages of these 2 offerings? Significant difference for rough tarmac daily-driven? Any difference in "booble-heading"? Any opinion on best match for the stock struts for occasional auto-x or driving schools or rally-x?
thanks,
Rik

Yeah, I would also like to know. Both very reputable springs, and such a toss up as to which are better.

We get ALOT of calls from people in areas of the US and CANADA that dont wanty their cars lowered AT ALL . So the Prodrives I think serve that purpose very well. Even thought the pinks dont lower the car but 20mm...its still 20mm. For the weekend autocrosser/ track goer. and husband with easily piss-off-able wife or GF.....the pinks allow you to lower the car a conservative amount, have a firmer ride and yet, get rid of the bobble head of the stock springs.

I have jumped my car, tracked my car, had 5 people in my car, run into pot holes that left the subframe ON the ground flat !!!............The pinks rule !! ...But the Prodrives are right there...........

Carrera GT and a ENZO......( Enzo doesnt come with Demi Moore ).......its a close battle............

So are you saying the Prodrives (with Group-Ns) are just as adept at eliminating the bobble-head factor?

What is your availability on the Prodrives?

I'd venture to say that its almost an aesthetic decision between the two. If you want to go more in the direction of the even fender gaps the Prodrives are the way to go, if that isn't a priority, go with the STi. I think out of the box the edge is with the STi but a small tweek to alignment or swaybar easily brings the prodrive to the same level. You can't really go wrong with either.

Myles - perhaps you can dump a couple of your zeal pics and substitute them with a couple of good side shots of your car with the Pinks and a car with the Prodrives ( I think Mike-creowrx- has a couple of good shots). it would be great for reference for folks interested in either.

Myles,
What changes have been made to the Prodrive springs? I still vote Pinks.

I have a set of prodrives in my 04 sti and drive the car in Long Island as a daily driver,I prefer the drop vs the pinks and felt the pinks would be too harsh. I recently helped a friend install his pinks and then did some testing. The spring rates felt slightly higher with the pinks and more linear. The prodrives are a progressive spring and absorb road imperfections better than the pinks. Both cars had hotchkis front and rear sways, steering rack bushings.
I would say if you drive mostly on the street go with the prodrives or if you drive mostly on the track or track conditions go with the pinks. I previously owned an S2000 and loved the handeling as long as the roads were smooth, but hit a bump in a high speed sweeping turn and look out, skip and hold on! I just didnt want those characteristics in my next car.
As for the grpn hats ,I never swapped mine but my buddy did with his pinks. The prodrives definately smoothen out the ride, less bobble headding. So experiment like me. After the prodrives I think I'll try a set of whiteling G4's.

We've noticed that the Prodrives are just a bit less harsh on poor road surfaces then the pinks as stated above. It is definately due to the fact that they are progressive. However, when they are thrown into corners from quick turn in don't discount them as the stiffen right up.

Biggly, they don't seem to drop the car as much as the first sets that were on the market. The pinks actually look lower. I believe that the rear sits taller with the Prodrives then with the pinks, and the front is pretty close to the same.

Pictures to come soon.

how much are both of them supposed to lower the car (WRX)? I think Pinks are like .8 drop?

Jeff, did Prodrive switch to a progressive wind with the 05 STi springs? till now the WRX springs were always linear. STi has always been progressive (in the rear). Not quite sure what you are saying regarding how this affects ride quality.

I'm saying that it feels a bit softer on rougher roads then the pinks do, and I believe it is because they are progressive all around, unlike the pinks (linear). But I've noticed when "throwing" the car around that they do firm up pretty quick.

Jeff - Thanks for your quick input. the STi pinks are progressive rear, linear front. The Prodrives, till now have been linear all around. So you are saying the revised Prodrive is now progressive all around? Any pics of the current Prodrive that you can post (just the springs uninstalled)?

I was told by Prodrive that the revised versions have a more progressive wound,................but at any rate, the Prodrives are better than they were in the beginning "IT SEEMS"............So now there is an alternative for the easily pissed off wives and girlfriends....

Thanks. I was considering the JDM Pinks but I also live on Long Island and think that linear may not be the way to go.

Myles. judging by the various pics posted online it appears to me that the prodrives settle quite a bit and the drop becomes more pronounced over time, have you observed the same thing or is this my imagination at work. I think some pics of the closeups for pinks vs prodrives would be real helpful

thanks!

I had Kings on my 04 STi first, and they were low and even both front and rear.
Then came the Prodrives, low in the front, higher in the rear(almost stock in the rear)
Now I have the pinks and Group N's. Even again, and not as low as the Kings.
Ride is to my liking so far, need more seat time to form an opinion.
One odd thing about all three sets( which leads me to believe it's not spring related),my car is .70 lower on the drivers side rear.
What's with that,and how can I compensate?

Mike
