Tire Noise
I searched, but couldn't find any similar description.
I have a 2002 WRX wagon, stock wheels and tires until a few days ago. I bought 2004 STI BBS wheels from someone here, and they had Hankook K106 tires on them, in 225/45/17. Plenty of tread left. They had balance weights on them, so I had them put on at a local place. The problem is that they are really loud. It's not just a slightly deeper growl like those made by snow tires. It's more like a deep whirring wind noise, like when you used to by one of those plastic tubes that you would swing and would make a doppler wind noise. (found a clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOuYvaT8-iE). The noise I get is much deeper than this, but similar in that the sound goes in and out quickly. It really reverberates in the wagon cabin. Loudly, but worst between 10 and 40 mph. Definitely changes with speed. I can't isolate it to a corner of the car. There's no vibration in the steering wheel, and they are solid at 75 mph. Anyone know what this could be? The wheels look to be in good condition. Thanks.

The tires are directional... would it help if I switched the front to back on one side of the car?
Safe to drive on for two weeks until I get my snow wheels put on? Thanks for the info btw, I was worried that there might be something wrong with the wheels. I don't see any bends, but I'm far from an expert. |
