Glad I found this. The gears on my 207 are broken off and my vice grips barely hold the core of the gear at all. I'm definitely doing this tomorrow!

1. Remove valve cover
2. Get 1 1/8" wrench
3. Crank up air compressor
4. Place and hold 1 1/8" wrench on end of cam inside of head and firmly hold steady.
5. Apply good 10 mm bit and an ass slamming impact gun to cam bolt ( hold straight)
6. Tell your self " damn i'm good " because you easily removed that bolt.

Dont assume any impact will break these free. A good slammer will free those bolts up in a matter of 6-10 hits. And as someone said " get a good bit". Look into nitro-cat impact guns. They're a bit expensive but a few more dollars will save you lots of dollars.

This is an excellent way to shear the head castings which locate the cams fore and aft. (thrust clearance).

Do not use a manual impact tool on the cams.....it is not even close to the right way to remove these pain in the butt bolts.

Ive only done this once, but at first i had issues removing the cam bolt with the valve cover on...

If you have the motor on a stand grab an adjustable wrench with a good length handle (you'll need the torque. Put in on the hex part of the camshaft inside the valve cover and hold it still while another person takes a breaker bar to the cam gear bolt. Works without failure every time. Now hopefully you WONT strip ur cam gear bolts anymore

Very creative BUT BEFORE YOU USE 10mm ALLEN TOOL, guys, make sure to use SNAP-ON ONLY! The problem with the cam bolt is not the bolt itself but cheap auto parts store quality of the tool. I purchased 1/2 inch drive 10mm Allen from SNAP-ON and it works like a champ! No more problems, and I rebuild lots of EJ motors. Good luck! everyone!

I just came across this for the first time now that I'm a subi owner. Bolts were installed by Zeus himself I'm sure of it. Either way, I used an Irwin bolt extractor. Hammered that puppy on used 1 1/8 wrench on cam and HWAMMY. It's all she wrote. I like this method even for bolts that aren't stripped because you can reuse the bolt and only use Allen for torquing on install not removal. P.s. I broke my snap on 10mm socket with a breaker bar.
