I have had an interest in this topic also for my 04 RS which does not have an illuminated key ring. In the last exchange I had on this topic I noticed that there was no existing wiring (this would apply to an 02 also). This was based on comparing the wiring diagram for an 04RS to the STI. Another poster argued that the wiring to make it illuminate and dim was a function of the ring itself. He said he was going to buy the ring and the two pieces of plastic above and below the ring (requires a larger opening than the existing stock plastic). I never heard back from the poster, although I may have missed some additional post.
If I was going to try this I would purchase the ring and the two pieces of plastic above and below it. Then I would assume I would have to power it independently from the dome light. I would use the positive brake light for a source of power since it is available when the car is off. Get in the car push on the brake and it would illunintae. This theory depends on whether the bulb can be powered by a 12 volt source. Yes the light would come on whenever you pushed the brake but so what.
So to answer your question no ones knows as far as I can tell.

I picked up a ring, the upper and lower pieces of the column shroud.

It works on 12V. Powering it with the brake light will light it whenever the brake is on - good idea. Powering it with the dome light will only make it work when the domelight is on, and for x seconds - also a good idea.

On those cars WITH this, how long does the keylight stay lit when the door is open then closed? Does it mirror the interior light for light duration? The magic box doesn't show anything on the 2004, different pinouts on the 2002, I have a 2003 and those pinouts are unknown to me.

Great . Good to know it can be powered by 12 volts.Hope you will post back as to the fitmeant of the of column shroud.

As far as I'm concerned it is not powered long enough from the dome light circuit.
Not sure what the reference is to a magic box or pinouts. If it is in reference to the keyless entry module there is no existing wiring that can be tapped into in order to power the keyring. I am basing this on a comparison of a 04 diagram of an sti to an 04 diagram of an rs , in addition to a visual inspection on the rs to confirm. There are no wires for dome light power as on the sti.
I currenty power from the brake light and much prefer it.

There is a module with a gray plug and a blue plug - its name escapes me - and that's what breaks ground on the 2004. It's under the dash under the steering wheel. Same "kind" of module on my 2003, different pinouts from 2002 and 2004. In a perfect world, you'd put one side of the keylight to power, and the other side to a pin on this "combination module" or whatever it's called....

Ok.That's called the integrated module. I traced the illuminated key ring power to the keyless entry module, or at least I thought I did. It was a year ago and perhaps i am just forgetful. I can re check my wiring diagrams later tonight.

Any further details on how to wire this up? As for how long it stays illuminted- my best friends says the ring stays lit while the doors are open and engine is off- as soon as the car starts- the light goes off. Basically, it is to provide assistance locating the ignition in the dark.

Installed the ring- just need to know how everyone is wiring this up. Looks like I am completely on my own on this install

Update...

Located an 04 STi repair manual and I see how it wires up in the car- but 2 things escape me:

1. both wires on the ring are green w/ white stripes
2. How to wire it up into the integrated module (which is dependant on an answer to question #1)

If you have a 2002, the integrated module has different wiring, so you're out of luck comapring it to the 2004. For 2003, I don't know - I don't have a 2003 wiring manual.. All it is for the light is power and ground, so it shouldn't matter which side of the bulb gets hot or ground.

Anyone figure out the best place to tap the power for the keylight??? I am trying to source the best place and I figure the dome light is probably best- although I cannot trace where to tap into it.

Finally just wired it up to come on when the running lights/headlights are on- couldn't get it to work with the dome light nor the door switches.

The dome light off the keyless is a switched ground. SO it will have power when the domw light is off. Which means you need to run that wire to one side of the light and then run a constant 12V source to other wire coming off the keyring. This makes it have a power and a ground when the dome light is on. The pinout on the keyless should be on the module itself or you need to use a voltmeter to check it out.

Part number for the keyring is: 84661FC010 comes to $30

Very cool. Wish we had a complete write-up on this. I guess I'll have to be patient.

If you have a 2003, it's easy to install the key light and make it work according to Hoyle.

If you have a 2002, you need to - either build a circuit, or tee it into the domelight.

I have a 2003.

Thanks, wagons_ho! I'll wait around and see if a diagram/walk through for the 02 shows.

Looks like I need to reverse the wiring to make it work with the dome light
