Topics to carry over from the January thread:

SS brake line local GB.
Austin and his wacky rear brake idea
Jaxx's new car break in.

I think that is about it.....

BTW studded snow tires suck.... I get this feeling that I am riding in a Vietnam era helocopter....

Anyone know a cheap place to buy a GC GrpN bushing kit? Just thought I would ask.

Jared-

Congratulations on the new car. Looks good. Any remorse for the RS?

Jeff-

I'll have to look back at the other thread to get a price. Might be interested in the brake lines.

Haven't been around much, working my arse off. Course doesn't seem to promote job security as another round of layoffs hit a couple weeks ago. Pretty indescriminate, one guy in my group got hacked and he was busy for the next 4 months. So now we are short on manpower in my group, been working 10s plus weekends. Suppose i'm making some cash but i'm scared to spend any of it. All I need is something, anything to make me think i'll be employed longer than a week and i'll unleash the bank account on my car.

Headed to NY Sunday, 4 days of training in Albany, going to spend a day in NYC and try to get mugged. Do the tourist ground zero check. One day at Mount Snow Vermont. See why they got the X-Games two years in a row. Should be interesting.

Finally got DSL at home here so I can check the thread in the evenings now.

Haven't done crap to the car, but I'm thinking about whipping up a intercooler sprayer for kicks. Figure i'll drop 4 bucks at radio shack and design a circuit to run the sprayer based on a few different variables. Have an off, full on, and auto position. Not 100% how i'll factor in the TPS, boost and whatever else i might need to compare, but that part will be easy mostly just deciding how I want it to work and something I won't have to do in the cold outdoors.

Anyway I'll try and throw out some random and stupid comments a little more often around here.

Shawn....

If you dont want to look back at the other thread, the price for the brake lines is $65 for all 4 lines.

Jeff..

So, anyone got a lift I can borrow? How heavy can a tranmission be?

A subaru transmission? couldn't weigh very much. I've packed around the 4-speed in my pickup and it's way the hell bigger than a suby tranny. I just used blocks of wood to drop it out, never had access to a tranny jack. Suppose yer just looking for another floor jack to use for it?

DO you think I can get the car high enough to use a floor jack to drop a tranny? I am pretty sure this year will be the last on this clutch. I guess that is what I get for letting friends drive my car.

I am really looking forward to the work we have to do this spring.

Jaxx's pile of parts for the WRX
lots of brake lines
Dan's turbo kit
My bushing kit

it will be interesting to see what else we add.

shawn i have been thinking about the intercooler sprayer ... the most logical trigger would be post-intercooler temp.. can ya do that .. if so i want a setup too...

Oooohhh... I'm still in need of auto control for my IC spray system... just haven't really had any time to think it through. I'd be interested in whatever you come up with Shawn.

You failed to emphasize something back there...

DAN'S TURBO KIT

I've made the decision that this will become more than just a turbo install with goodies (rrpfr, fpr, fuel pump, fuel lines, etc)

Now we are looking at replacement ECU and the test and tune extravaganza!!!

I figure it will take more than a weekend for us to do the install... and by 'us' I mean Jeff, of course.

Dan

Ooo... and I NEED that new g-tech...

Default Intercooler Sprayer

Is there a TE on the outlet of the intercooler? If so it will be simple, if not it's still no big thing. Type-K TCs are pretty cheap. One AI through a comparator to the switch and voila your IC sprayer turns on at the set temp. Add in a potentiometer and you can select what temp you want it to go off.

Approximate electrical cost including the thermocouple couldn't be more than $10.

oookay there engineer boy what is a TE outlet
i assume a Type-K TCs is some sort of temp sensor

so if were only at $10 we need
an lcd to display the temp (could we use the lcd from the stock clock?)so that we can set the pot
some thing to decide how long to keep the sprayer on
also need to find the factory switch

TE - ISA Symbol for "Temperature Element" sorry I probably got a little carried away there.

The Type-K TC is a Thermocouple, measures temperature by the dissimilar metals theory. Heat two metals one will get longer than the other, blah blah. Anyway I think the Type-K would be the right one, unless you think that the intake air would see numbers lower than 32 degrees F. Sure maybe when you start up in the cold but it won't be long until it's much higher.

So is there a temperature probe/element, what have you, on the outlet side of the intercooler? I would assume yes so they could control that temp by modulating boost. We MIGHT be able to tap off this sensor and get a reading, although we can't pull that crap in my line of work so we might want to put another sensor in ourselves or figure out how to make a cheap loop splitter so we don't introduce error into the signal. If no, then we will need to put one in. Don't have to use a TC, but its cheaper. There are several other ways. As for the groovy readout of temperature I suppose, yes I could do that, and have a user defineable setpoint. This would require another $10 bucks i'd say at radio shack to get the cool LCD display, I was just going to use a variable resistor and hide it somewhere out of the way. But a LCD display with some cool buttons, maybe a horn and flames might be something i'll look into. Seriously though, that shouldn't be too hard.

As for how long to leave the thing on, there are a few ways of doing this as well. What I'm thinking is having the thing kick on at say 100 (merely an examply value) then have the thing kick off at say 90. Sadly I can't remember what the hell us I&C engineers call this, sensor lag, deadband, some crap, I just know what it does and don't worry about the names. Or, we can have a timer, or a programmable lower setpoint value.

Funny thing is, what sparked this whole thing was something I was doing at work. A piece of industrial equipment that I put the I&C for a sprayer on, yep, a big-ass intercooler sprayer...heh. Course my budget on that was a little more. Something like 15,000 for the hardware alone. Hoping to sneak under that number on this budget.

Shawn

p.s. The $10 listed was merely for the electronics, not the other stuff, pump, hoses, nozzles, etc...course by the time i'm done dreaming this up and building a working version, you can buy one for 39.95 off my website....heh.

FWIW, I used four Arizona Mist spray nozzles, a $7 generic washer fluid pump, and a couple switches for control. The Arizona Mist nozzles make a super-fine mist - if you run your hand through their spray field, you won't feel wet... just cool. Right now for control I have a momentary-on pushbutton switch, and a push-on/push-off switch, but no auto controls...

This sounds interesting - what do you want for a TC? I can make them at work and can get you what you need... (that's just the TC, not the controller). Let me know what you need/want.

I got my 11.4" rear rotors installed today. Since I have no numbers to back me up, all I can say is I like how it feels. The back definitely feels settled, and I don't think the rears hit abs any sooner than the fronts did...

as there is really no need for an intercooler sprayer in the winter a 32 F should be fine

in addition to the set point the lcd would be intersting to see if it is actually working

still not sure what should trigger shut down .. or if it should only be a pluse ( or series of pulses)? if i recall the one on the cobb car was based on TPS..

i think vivid had a pump+hoses kit for like $35

jeff and i installed my boost gage yesterday... looks pretty good...

Default Thought

Ok, how sick am I? Did I even mention the hot tub? No just the shop, but then again Jeff didn't either. Hmmm, what does that say about us?

I dont think the shop is tall enough for a lift. We might be able to talk jaxx into digging a pit, but that would be the max.

I need to know who is in for the SS brake line deal?
So far I have:
Me,
Jaxx,
Dan,
John,

anyone else?

Jeff

PS hot tubbing with a bunch of subaru guys just dont cut it for me.... either we get more girls in the "club" or no hot tubbing.
