Subaru XV Concept teased ahead of Auto Shanghai debut
By Tim Beissmann | April 11th, 2011

A teaser image of the Subaru XV concept has been released ahead of the vehicle’s debut on April 19 at Auto Shanghai 2011.

Few details are known about the mysterious XV crossover concept, although it is likely to provide us with an insight into the design of the upcoming Subaru Impreza hatch.

Subaru says the XV concept “blends practicality with fashionable form, fun and comfort” and will feature the brand’s famous symmetrical all-wheel drive system for “genuine crossover ability”.

Subaru Australia currently sells a variant of the Impreza called the XV: a high-riding hatchback with a unique body kit designed to offer enhanced off-road ability and outdoor practicality. The teaser image reveals a vehicle with roof racks and flared wheel arches, suggesting it could be designed for a similar purpose.

Subaru Australia managing director, Nick Senior, said more information about the XV concept would be revealed at Shanghai next Tuesday, two days before the unveiling of the all-new Subaru Impreza at the 2011 New York International Auto Show on April 21.

I like the looks of it in the picture.... I just worry that in better lighting, it might not look so good.

Subaru, I'm impressed, which is saying a lot. I'm hoping this thing is more Outback sized than Impreza sized. Makes me think of a slightly beefier Infiniti FX which has long been on my list of beautiful crossovers.

There already is an XV version based on the current Hatch, this is the new XV based on the 2012 Hatch.

Sounds like it will debut at about the same time the Impreza will debut in NY. The 19th in Shanghai will the 20th here, due to the time difference.

I hope we get it here to replace the Outback Sport (or just make this the Outback Sport).

This is a concept car for the Shanghai auto show - it won't feature in NY.

Subaru hasn't put out a decent looking car for the past six years, so i'd say you have a legitimate concern.

If you put that picture above the picture of the new impreza released by Subaru and look at the line where the hood connects, the line where the A-pillar connects, the slope of the grille, etc. I believe we are looking at a concept version of a (lifted) new 5-door impreza

Ditto here. I much prefer the current-gen Impreza XV to the Impreza OBS we now get in the States. Let SOA marketing can call it an OBS, as it's a well-established name in the North America, but give us the XV.

Addendum: I think I'm liking the wheels but won't know for certain until they turn on the lights.

I'm sure the wheels on this concept will never make production. Judging by this image I'd say they're at least 19 inches, maybe even 20 inches. The production model most likely will have 17 inch wheels. The current XV uses 16 inch wheels.

That should be our new OBS. It's time for it to be more than just a paint and content variation of the Impreza 5 door.

Looks MUCH better than the sedan. Almost looks like a new Tribeca concept but smaller...

Sorry, Bob, I love the wheels!

Don't have to be sorry. I like them too. I just don't think they'll see production.

My wife and I each have an outback and when we are ready to replace, this(OBS?) would work for me and she can get the bigger outback.
