Default Coventry University seminar launches Merrit un-throttled spark ignition system

20th Febuary 2008

The British Midlands Development Corporation announced on 19h February the launch at Coventry University on February 15th of a new combustion system, MUSIC (Merritt Un-throttled Spark Ignition Combustion).

The MUSIC engine promises a 20% improvement in CO2 emissions, with a 4-cylinder prototype under development and in-vehicle testing now underway. The MUSIC technology has proved itself to be capable of delivering numerous benefits of throttle-less, ultra-lean burn configuration. Some of the key features include:

- True un-throttled running

- Ultra-lean burn capability (in excess of 100:1 AFR)

- Near Diesel levels of thermal efficiency

- CO2 reduction by 20%

- NOX reduction by up to 50%

- Operates over the whole speed/load range

- Requires no other support technology

- Potentially cost neutral

- The MUSIC technology can be used in any and all gasoline engines.

The February 15th seminar featured details regarding the MUSIC technology and panel discussions from the team of engineers involved in the project.

Doesn't Inifiniti already use a throttle-less intake system governed by valving? Or is this something entirely different?

I'd love to see what this tech could do for a chronically rich turbo engine.
