Default Canada’s First Eco-Friendly Rally Car wins Ontario Championship

Quote:
Friends of The Garage, Chris Martin and Phil Narini completed a stellar season at the 2009 round of the Rally of the Tall Pines. Their win at Pines brought it all together as they won the 2009 Ontario Performance Rally Championship (OPRC) Overall Driver, Open Class Driver and Novice Driver.

“It feels great to win the OPRC championships!” says Martin. “Winning our first rally in April at Shannonville and now finishing the season with another OPRC win, and the Ontario Championship, it has been a great year, with the points coming down to a battle at the final rally. The competition has been great, and we look forward to another battle next year.”

Their car of choice was a 1993 Subaru Impreza, fueled by E85 bio-ethanol fuel rather than the race gas chosen by most other teams. Theirs is the first car in the Ontario Rally Championships and the Canadian Rally Championships to use this fuel.

“We were really looking forward to showing people what we could do using ethanol,” says Martin, “My win demonstrates you can be environmentally friendly and still win. I hope that other drivers will see this as the perfect opportunity to use less racing fuel and help the environment at the same time.”

If the car looks familiar, it could be that we showed pictures of it last year at the Subaru show we organized.
Great job guys!

ohh...eco-friendly. like a basic Suburban.

Seriously, anyone who says "It runs on E85!!" and claims it to be a champion of eco-friendly is just silly. there is almost no difference between an E85 motor and a normal gas one. It's just bigger injectors and different plastics in the fuel system so they wont break down.

motorsports and eco-friendly shouldnt be in the same sentence. motorsports should be left alone. its a minority of the pollution that is caused everyday compared to regular transportation. like the great george carlin once said about pollution," the world isnt going anywhere, we are!"

Motorsports research trickles down to consumer cars. If they can make an "eco friendly" car that competes at that level, I'm all for it. It's not about pollution it's about the technology.

George Carlin was not funny, and was not smart.

Apparently you have never heard of eletric motors powered by capicitors, the latter only making practical sense (currently) in racing application. Given the 2.0L displacement limit I am surprised we havent seen more hybrid applications to provide significant power boosts. But for the weight of these cars a turbo or two can usually do the trick. Nevertheless, eletric motors really put down torque nicely.

They are getting more than enough power and torque out of the 2L motors. Adding the complexity of a hybrid system and weight of batteries isn't worth the effort. As far as rallly goes, having a ton of instant torque on a loose surface isn't always the best thing in the world.

To me running E85 in your rally car and calling it eco-friendly is a bit of a stretch. Sure you aren't running leaded race gas like the guy next to you and I suppose you're more eco-friendly than he is, but E85 hasn't shown itself to be eco-friendly.

I agree e85 isnt eco friendly since it takes more energy to make than it produces. E85 is great in a budget racer though ~$2 a gallon compaired with 6 dollars a gallon for 14-108 race fuels. E85 is about 40% less effiecent for long term use but it is about the same as 108 octane making it a great race alternative.

Ethanol can be made out of a lot more than just corn though. There really is no reason to no further development, make production more efficient.
