You have to clean snow off it to see it?

As far as I know,Carbon Fiber can be treated like any other piece of painted (or non painted) sheetmetal.

I know that wax/polish is the exact same since carbon fiber pieces have layers of clear coat, like paint/body panels.

Weight of snow is most likely very bad for expensive/non weight bearing CF.

although it is hard to damage.

I heard somewhere that CF is almost impossible to damage.

That was my point exactly... all I had to do with my hood was wipe the snow off if I wanted to see it. It would have to be some seriously sh**/fake carbon fiber to crack because of snow/cold weather. Fiberglas hoods on the other hand...

Don't do it!
I bought a VIS CF Hood last year to replace my hail damaged one ( And I thought VIS was one of the higher quality ones ), and drove it through the winter. This summer, I have 3 cracks in it, all around the hood scoop opening.
Oh, and there is no warranty, so I am screwed

p.s. its the clearcoat, not the weave itself.

Huh... My hood is from Fiber Images... maybe that's the difference?

Maybe...
I didn't have a garage to park in as well. So what I'm thinking is the course of the seasons was too much stress for the clear coat.

The other issue I have with my carbon fiber hood is it shakes violently when I am in "dirty air" (following someone). For the first couple of weeks of ownership, I thought my hood was open all the time.

GAH! That sounds more likely to be the source of your cracking issue than a temperature thing. Ok... VIS is definitely on my list of BAD CF hood makers... that's terrible. My hood showed no signs of any flapping even before I installed the hood pins...

Sounds like you and I both need hood pins.

Anyone have suggestions on who to source some decent ones from? (Non-locking though--the barrel locking types seem to be too thick to go through the CF without splintering).

Had my CF hood for at least 2 winters now and no problems with it cracking due to snow, cold, or anything like that. I will say that the clearcoat has scratches and chip, but due to rocks and **** like that. The actual weave is fine and the clearcoat can be re-sprayed, i would think... but I don't really care cause i still have the OEM hood and I didn't pay for the hood (it was a trade for oem wheels). But I would suggest hoodpins on it though! but that's just me and it's your car that might get flucked up if that hood pops up on your windshield.

Vis hoods?
Kaminari?

On another note: CF is pretty strong...IF the weave is tight and the fiber bonds are good it can be VERY strong. I've snapped CF hockey sticks in half a few times and it's kinda cool to see when they do. CF seems to get more brittle in the cold just as most metals tend to do...they usually design things like that to break within a certain impact range aka my hockey stick can only take so much abuse/pounds per square inch of force...they don't want it to break someones leg in half because it's so strong. I'm sure the hoods are the same unless it's some cheapo company. :shrugs:

Fiber Images make one of the best CF hodds on the market. check their website out. I used to run one on my civic. they have the video of a car running over the hood and some guy jumping up and down on top of the hood. No cracks just scratches on the clear coat and resin.

Sparco hood pins are worth the money..if you buy the slider type...mount them to so the pins slide horizontal.

Carbon Fiber is very hard to damage. IF you made your entire car from carbon fiber, it would be indestructable.

That is not true at all. If you made a car out of c/f if would be light. If you were in an accident it would crack and shatter. It's not magical, it's light. It can handle loads very well but cannot handle impact.

Default Cracked cf trunk

I have the seibon carbon c style trunk and it has like 6 huge cracks in it from the cold. Does anyone know why this would happen? I contacted seibon and they said it shouldn't happen
