Question Programming TPMS on 2013 Impreza

Not sure if this should go here or in the Tire & Wheel forum but I figured I would start here.

New owner of a 2013 Impreza Sport Limited. Purchased a set of 4 Blizzak winter tires and wheels from America's Tire and TPMS sensors from tirerack.com. So far, the only place that is capable of programming the car to read the sensors is the Subaru dealership, and they want $100 to do it (thieves)! I have contacted Les Schwab, Firestone, America's Tire, Walmart and Sears and no one is able to program the 2013 yet. Apparently it is different than the 2012, America's Tire could read the car but not write the new sensors to the car.

Anybody have any recommendations?

I hope you find an answer. I'll be dealing with this myself next year.

I've been looking into getting winter tires and everyone tells me I have to take it to a Subaru dealer to have them programmed.

WARNING EDUCATED GUESS:
ATEQ quickset, I haven't gotten around to emailing ateq to confirm if the quickset works with 2012 and up impreza.

EZ SENSOR and ez sensor pad: little bit pricier

IGNORE IT: free, I would assume only if you are going in to pass state inspection would you need the tpms light to be off otherwise put on oem wheels, pass inspection then take them off.

This is what I'm doing. I bought a used set of Blizzak WS60 snow tires with only 5k miles on them, mounted onto an old set of WRX wheels. These don't have TPMS sensors in them, so I ignore the light on the dash.

According to a reviewer of this item on Amazon, it does NOT work with a 2012 Subaru Impreza. http://www.amazon.com/ATEQ-QuickSet-TPMS-Reset-Tool/dp/B008SCWXN4

that was in comments after the 2012 user who posted it didn't work, I also saw mention on nasioc of someone else using it on
the 2012 impreza. I will test in spring lol.

Changed my tires and wheels for the winter. The TPMS light popped up on the dash on my 2012 Impreza. Used this device to enter in the serial numbers from the wheels for the winter setup and the light disappeared. Now I can switch between the summer and winter setup.
well that problems solved just gotta make sure you use the latest software version I am assumnig.

Carr Subaru sells winter wheel packages. You can choose steel wheels or alloys. The package comes without TPMS and they will install the winter setup.

Thanks for sharing. It's good to know it can be done. But I'll live with the light, and I check my tire pressure at least every couple of weeks, so I'm not too worried about it.

Ignoring it would have been an option if I wasn't forced to purchase the TPMS sensors to begin with. No tire places will mount and balance the tires for me without TPMS sensors installed. I figure if I have to purchase them then the better work!

are you in one of those states where a TPMS light is an inspection failure?

Do we have a list of those states? I wasn't aware of that some states fail inspection on TPMS lights.

What dealer wants $100? If it's Wentworth, then I suggest calling Carr. That's where I bought my car, and had the service department perform some add-ons for a good price.

I bought a gallon of super coolant for $24.38 at Carr, Wentworth wanted $44.00 for the same gallon.

Apparently, NYS does not fail an inspection due to the TPMS light:

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...estion-on-TPMS

And I read in another thread that PA is the same way.

The local tire dealer where I bought my rims said in NY State they don't require the TPMS light to be off to pass inspection this year, but probably will next year.

I swapped my tires and moved my inspection one month earlier (due in Dec, done in Nov) so next year I get my inspection then mount my snows (without TPMS).

I would ignore it for 4 months, but OP is in oregon so having the dash light on half the year could get annoying. call other dealerships. good luck.

So if you have 2 sets of tires do you have to get them reprogrammed every time you swap them? im guessing you could swap them without reprogramming every time, which means you can have as many sensors programmed to the car as you want?

According to my dealership, Gresham Subaru, the Impreza can hold only 4 sensors at a time in the programming. Swapping tires and sensors requires a reprogram of the car, so 2x a year @ $100 each time adds up quickly. None of the tire shops charge for programming but at this point cannot do it.

So you're willing to ignore the light for 4 months, but not 6? I think at the end of 4 months, anyone would be use to having the light on, and could survive another 2 months.

I believe the Subaru's factory sensors require dealership programming every time you switch wheel sets. This is why I didn't bother putting sensors in my winter wheels. This was an advantage of the TPMS system my 2010 Golf had; it automatically recognized the new sensors in the wheels, and accepted them without reprogramming the car.

I also believe I've read that there is some aftermarket brand of sensors that can be programmed to match the original sensors that came in your original wheels. But I decided I didn't care enough to pay the extra money for not only the sensors but also the programmer for the sensors, so I gave up and decided to ignore the light on my dash.

Yea I agree, screw that. That adds up.

Can you take the sensors out of one set of tires and put them in another without re-programming? thanks.

I guess the technical answer is "yes", but that gets expensive too. Most garages charge $20/wheel for mounting and balancing, and I'm guessing that charge goes up if you have TPMS sensors. My primary reason for having a dedicated set of wheels for my snow tires is so that I don't have to go to a garage 2x/year for tire installations.

I don't believe the DEQ inspection considers a TPMS light as a failure since it is about emissions here in Oregon.

My son will be taking his driving test for his license in a couple weeks and DMV here has said that any warning lights are reason not to use that vehicle for the test. I don't have a spare vehicle so I haven't put the winter tires on yet.

Regardless, tire dealers will NOT put tires without TPMS sensors on a car that came with TPMS. I have had 4 different places tell me that. I have already purchased the sensors and they are all mounted and balanced and ready to go on my car either after my son's test or when I can get the TPMS programmed, whichever comes first.

I've had no issues in NH. They don't care. In fact they don't even have to know what vehicle the tires are for and really - it's none of their business. LIVE FREE OR DIE MOFOS!!!!
