i would say the flywheel, i've heard of lighter flywheels doing some weird stuff with the knock sensor.

and that CEL flash isn't a misfire... its a knock.... could be misfire, could be detonation, could be preignition... all you know is something is ****ed up inside that cylinder wall... maybe you need new spark plugs or something i dunno i'd go check it out |

From numerious reports here, ltw flywheel isn't a good combo with a ltw crank pulley.

I heard somewhere that too light of a flywheel will make the timing belt jump a tooth. Don't know for sure, just thought I'd chime in.

Per federal (or at least California) requirements, the Malfunciton Indicator Lamp (MIL or CEL) will flash when a level of misfire has been detected that is deemd to be high enough to cause immediate catayst damage. Basically, this means the OBD software thinks you're misfiring bad enough to get catalyst temps up over like 1100 degC or so. (see http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/download...ro_to_obd2.pdf)
This could be "real" misfire, but it is more likely that the combination of lightweight flywheel and pulley threw off the OBD system. Misfire is detected by measuring very small variations in crankshaft RPM. Lightweight flywheels and/or pulleys reduce engine inertia, which will directly increase the "cyclical" variations in engine speed. (i.e. small changes in RPM with each cylinder firing). It has been reported on various scoobys that this can cause false detection of misfire, although it is typically a problem at idle I believe. Since you don't have any cats (you did get rid of the uppipe cat, right?) cat damage isn't an issue so it was probably a false detection. If you feel any hesitation/miss/etc. I'd grow more concerned and look at your ignition system first (most common misfire cause). For more info than you ever wanted to know about misfire, check the "Diagnostic Trouble Code Detecting Criteria" section of the service manual. Of note is the fact that some older (pre-OBD2) vehicles did indeed flash a light based on various other feedback mechanisms, including engine knock detection... Edit -- found it in the service manual under "Malfunction Indicator Light": 3) If the diagnosis system senses a misfire which could damage the catalyzer, the malfunction indicator light will blink at a cycle of 1 Hz. I just took my car in for inspection, and for the first time Im showing a misfire on all 4 cylinders, I feel like it was because I set my UTEC, to an un-normal stage ( what I thought was valet mode.) Because when I run it with UTEC in 6 it does run a little sluggish and weird....I normally run it on 3(which is Stage III)
anyone heard of a tuning change throwing up a misfire on all 4? also, my check engine light isn't coming on because of it..... odd someone help...ahh I have a lightweight flywheel (fidanza), but like I said, my car hasnt thrown the Misfire out before |

I'm sorry...cant let it pass...Destroy? STI's? Come down out of the clouds son, do you want help? Then why a statement like that? Did you have the car dynoed? did you do your own mods? maybe thats the problem?
If you've been in there...check your vacuum hoses and intake hoses...pay particular attention to the pcv hose, it couldve popped off. Next time you want to play...come my way...I'll show you how its done. |

did the car buck at all? if it was really missing at that kind of RPM i'd think you would notice it for sure.
I have a LW flywheel. I get misfires on all four... all the time. |

Back in the day, I got solid CELs (misfires in all 4) at idle/near-idle with an ultralight flywheel. They were apparently just the crank angle sensors getting confused by the change in deceleration that the lighter FW allowed.
It wasn't really a big deal, and there are reports here that SOA is now reflashing the old ECUs to make them less sensitive. Flashing CELs are usually a more urgent indicator of a malfunction. |

CEL flashing light is not a mis fire, its engine noise, either caused from pinging, detonation, pre-ignition, or just plain and simple engine noise. UTEC can be set to pick up the slightest engine noise and report it...

A tuning change can definately trigger a misfire in all four cylinders. I went from a Perrin fmic to a process west tmic on my 03 and before I had a chance to retune it I had to drive it. The tune was way too rich which led to 4 fouled plugs and misfires
