Help! Engine misfire after boost gauge install...SOLVED ;-)
UPDATED: Probelm Solved! Took my wagon to DS1...took out spark plug #4...and the insulator was cracked. Double checked compression (tested out fine) and replaced that spark plug.
Now its running just like new!! Background info: -Grounding Mod -Snorkle delete -Short shifter -no other mods Car has ran rough before. One time got CEL = misfire on Cylinder #4. Swapped coil packs #4 and #2. Ran perfectly after the swap. I have also previously changed the spark plugs several thousand miles prior to the above CEL. Car has ran fine ever since. Yesterday: Installed OEM boost gauge. I took it out for a test spin, ran rough (flashing CEL - misfire). Thought I migh have the T-connector on wrong, switched it around. Still misfiring - thought that T-connector was too small = swapped in a bigger one... Still ran rough, and I got a CEL (steady on). -I know, I am going to get the CEL read later this morning - will update! CEL = P0304 - Misfire on cylinder #4. Same cylinder that had the misfire last time. Since I swapped coil packs, I know it is not the coil pack. Check the gap next? Any other ideas? Although, now I know that I am running at full, steady boost at WOT This morning on the way to work, the car seemed to be running better... Pic for reference of T-connector below. QUESTIONS: Is there any reason why I would get an engine misfire after installing a boost gauge? This is not boost leak, correct? Recommendations? Time to take it to the shop? Pic of T-connector: (PS - I did search and I did not find much on this topic...) CLIFFS: Installed boost gauge, now have CEL. Could it be related to install of boost gauge??

I doubt the gauge install has anything to do with the misfire. Your connections look fine. Only thing that may be possible is a vacuum leak but I would think you would have a lean code as well.
Find out what cyl misfired. If it is 4 again then the packs are ok. What plugs are you using? What did you gap them to? |

Well misfire came from same cylinder as the last time. Probably not the coil pack since it has been swapped.
It is just weird because the misfire comes and goes... Check spark plug gap? anything else? |

Since the miss fire only happens under wide open throttle, and its always been cylinder 4, could it be a fuel injector? Can I replace just one injector and not all 4? Maybe its the fuel filter, but I guess that wouldn't always cause the same cylinder to misfire... Last edited by wrxsomeday; 09-02-2009 at 11:28 AM. |

if it was an injector then you would have a rough running engine all the time

Take the 'T' back out and put it back to normal. Check and see if it's still running rough and misfiring. My bet is you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

What would cause a misfire on just one cylinder? |

Faulty injector, bad coilpack, bad sparkplug, blown intake manifold gasket near that cylinder, low cylinder compression....

So I guess I'll check the gap/spark plug...and god I hope I didn't blow an intake gasket. I can check compression when I check plug as well. |
