My 2008 STI just got out of the shop... Basically the guy that owned it before me 28k miles when I bought it, had thrown an aftermarket BOV on there and I immediately removed it..Turns out it melted the first CAT internally and caused my engine to stop breathing.. So FYI, get a tune if you choose to run a BOV.

so rallycars and racecars with bov's are ricers? dude to each his own. they sound cool and look cool and are alot cheaper and sometimes better than bpv's. just because thats what you think a ricer is doesnt mean its what we all think. i believe a rices is a rigged honda with a exhaust that the driver thinks makes the cars faster then a Rexx. im sure people with Lamborghini's think that Rexx's are ricers. just saying dude.

When I think of a "ricer" I don't think of a Subaru that has mods. I think of a honda del slow with a coffee can exhaust, or a honda civic with an intake and exhaust plus front wheel drive.

Or,

A car with racing stickers! LOL

Rephrase: You cannot tune for a VTA BOV, while keeping the stock MAF sensor. There is no way for the engine to account for the air being vented out without changing to a blow-through sensor.

thank u for the write up! currently have a turbo x's hybrid 50/50 bov on my 12' wrx. only vents when i open it up and drives without a problem afr's read great too. only problem with it is backfiring which seems to be common with any VTA bov.

have any suggestions/opinions on any other bov's (50/50) that wont backfire?? or any full recirc BOV that will give any sound??

rally cars seldom use a bov. Not one that anyone here would ever use anyway.

racecars, again, almost never. Unless its a show/race car.

No, you don't. Because you can't. Its 100% impossible to tune the ECU to deal with an arbitrary amount of already measured air being bled off at random times, in amounts that it has no way of measuring.

^ yup...

most race cars and rally cars do not use anything. crawford performance has made multiple statements on here as well as iwsti about there not being many if any negative effects to running without one, and they stated that they delete the bpv/bov on all of their race or rally cars.

the only way you could possibly tune for it would be to switch to speed density or blow through.

Default Bov

Speaking of BOV's any recommendations for my 04 WRX? I been doing upgrades here and there and I been wanting to get a BOV. SO far I have Got up pipe, dp, mp, turbo back and a cold air intake. Next thing I'm sving up for is a access port.

I didn't read through all 12 pages, but I'm just throwing out there that I love the sound of a good BOV. I also agree that ricer is a state of mind, not a clear definition.

For anyone out there looking for the best of both worlds, get a Go Fast Bits BOV similar to this:

You can change it by twisting the top of it for full recirculation or full VTA, or somewhere in between. Quite a thing I think

Davenow;
Thanks for the write up!
That said, I have a question. My stock recirc valve is starting to squeak (leak) and i've purchased a Forge adjustable BPV. this unit works with 3 choices of spring and shims to dial it in properly. I will definitely datalog, do pulls and adjust to make sure I have it dialed in according to the boost levels my tune allows. Is there anything else I need to do? other than your original instruction and cleaning it every oil change?

^ your wrx DOES NOT call for a VTA bov...i agree completely with davenow's post, and i personally run a VTA bov on my bugeye without any real issues...BUT...just because it won't hurt anything or cause problems on the car doesn't mean it "calls for it". the system was designed with a BPV in mind, not a BOV. using a BOV may work just fine, but it definitely isn't how the car's system was designed.
