Advice needed re: purchase of new car
Hey guys, I think some of you may already know, but I was just about to head out and purchase a brand new Infiniti G37x coupe. Here's the problem... I recently just caught wind of a 2003 Porsche Carrera 4S going for $57900 with only 18000kms on it! Both cars are AWD, both have similar power numbers, but man, I gotta tell ya, the body for the C4S (same body as the turbo) is gorgeous IMO. Maintenance might be a major concern, but I heard good things about the C4S in terms of reliability. Waddya guys think? Have any of you guys heard horror stories about C4S reliability? I'm also concerned about the huge depreciation associated with a brand new car... probably lose $5k the second I drive off the lot with the Infiniti lol
Question: Which would you choose?

can you afford maintenance on a car with NO Warranty? Can you afford it on a Porsche AWD system. if that thing breaks are you taking out a second mortgage to fix it?
thats what you need to ask yourself, can you afford it. We don't know, we dont know what kinda money you have. I would say that the porsche is FAR more timeless then the infinity, plus the new G37 isn't as sexy as the G35 IMHO. So my choice if I could afford it would be the Porsche, but regardless with a high end brand you take a hit, even on the used porsche, but man they are sexy. Oh and powerlevels means nothing, just look at what they two are meant for, G37 = exec car, Porsche = drivers car. |

I doubt the C4S is a drivers car, and I think Porsche didn't really intend to have that AWD handle. But that's just what I've read. Then neither is the G37x - so why buy an Infiniti AWD? I ask the same question for IS 250 AWD, not every AWD is created the same.
Ask yourself why you wanted a used Porsche - is it just because it's a Porsche? |

have you compared the cost of insurance on both vehicles? You might want to take that into consideration as well.
I can't rmb, but the g37x is a 4 seater while the porsche is a 2 seater right? correct me if i'm wrong. I've sat in my buddies g35 coupe, and it was squishy in the back, but for the ladies it was fine. So if you need that extra space for passengers go infiniti. And i'm pretty sure the maintanence on the porsche will cost you an arm and a leg as per compared to the G37 which should still have warranty since you are buying it from a stealership. But I do love the styling of the porsche over the g37, so if you want brand, then go for it You just gotta cough up the dough for it. |

apples and oranges IMO....tough to compare....but the porsche will be much more expensive to keep on the road....

i like the word u use Justin "stealership" ok back to OP, if u are not going to keep the car for a long period of time then why not give a try for the porcshe....but same as what Justin said, maintanence will cost u an arm and a leg plus it's a used european car, u never know what's going to happen after driving it for a week. |

If the vehicle was going to be my daily driver then I would choose the G35 or my '08 STI which is for sale by the way. Finding snowtires(runflats=$$$$) for a Porsche doesn't sound right, the car should only be driven when the sun is shining unless it is a Cayenne.
If you want awd stick with a Subie, Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, Merc etc. are trying to fight for this market but we all know who rocks the party. Just my 2 cents. |

C4s not a driver's car lol, maybe not as good as a regular C2 as driving experience goes but its definitely still a porsche. I have to say Porsche has its own magic, almost every single guy i know whos owned exotics and then driven a porsche has said the samething. Seriously though beside the current price these two cars are in totally different league by the way though despite the fact the C4s has low milage its still way over priced. You can find a imported low milage 996 turbo for that kinda of money or a bit more if you look hard enough. Also unless you really think AWD is necessary then a clean 996 C2 would be just way better. Also i think you can get 05 997 C2 for close to 60k as well |

My buddies that work at MCL says the 996 is probably the worst 911 for build quality and reliability. The 993s or 997s are the way to go plus the body shape is way sexier. I think the 996s are kind of bland.
You better see if you get get extended warranty for the car. If you do need to fix anything be prepared to pay. In this price range... I'd look at a used Audi RS4 or check out the new supercharged S4. |

Audi, Merc. and BMW are beautiful cars but when their service managers tell you "keep them until the warranty is up, hint, hint" stay away unless you can purchase extended warranty.
I have heard there are problems with the 996(first gen. waterpumper), very common issues that I would search the forums and get more info about. |

Whew, lots of good input. I guess I'll provide a bit more detail. I'd be leasing the Porsche for either 24 or 36 months (haven't decided yet), I'd be financing the Infiniti for 48 months or 60 months. I WILL be purchasing extended warranty that will cover 24 or 36 months ($2000+ for the 24 months, $3000+ for the 36 months) for the Porsche.
I'm also not looking for a 4-door car right now. When I have a family, I'll look into a sedan again I also don't want a Porsche turbo. Porsche's cost enough to fix, adding a turbo into the mix just makes the situation scarier lol. Insurance is not a major concern to me. I've got the maximum discount and Roadstar (knock on wood). Styling-wise, I have to admit, I love the C4S compared to the G37: Last edited by HKSR; 11-14-2009 at 10:39 PM. |

I think the Infinity will be more practical. You'll be able to drive it year-round; not so much with the Porsche. You'll need a winter car if you get the Porsche.
If I were getting a used Porsche, I'd go with a 993 or a 997. I'm not a fan of the 996 styling at all. The headlights ruin it. |

Well this thread is very informative to myself since i was very unaware of the unreliabilty of a porsche.
OP - Not sure how long you plan to keep this car for, as you said when you have a family you might look into a sedan. If you only keep this car for a year or two, I'd go for the porsche, resale will be more reasonable as you mentioned, you drive off the lot with the infin and you'll lose 5g from the get go. Again i dont have much experience with the porsche thing so not 100% sure about the resale but something to consider. As far as my personal opinion style wise, i would pick the porsche hands down. There were a few other models mentioned above, any perticular reason you picked the g37? |

Am I the only one that would choose an STI over either of them?
They're both really nice but, I dunno. |

GET THE PORSCHE!!
I was at the Bellingham Porsche dealer checking out a 997 turbo today. What a machine. Just by sitting in it and listen to the motor making that beautiful noise in the back is enough for me to take the Porsche. |

sure the c4s is pretty low mileage.. but i'm not sure if it's worth almost 60k.. and it's a 2003.. so a 5-6 year old car.. hmmm..
in terms of pimp factor.. there is no comparison.. i would check around and compared prices on the 996 first.. y not 370z? haha.. |

Hmm, for that money I'd get a three year old Z06.... but that's not AWD and doesn't have 4 seats so I guess it's out of the question for you.

That Porsche is nice, and what kronizer said about depreciation is true. The Porsche is also dead sexy and in my opinion is no contest.
