Default Montana: One Step Closer to the Stone Age

This is pretty interesting, rather old, old school. (I searched)
Interesting read as a whole.

CN-Spear chuck'n in Montana

In defense of the spear, Atlatl Bob offers governor a demonstration
http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com...cc4c002e0.html

Sen. Greg Hinkle's Senate Bill 112 to allow spear hunting does not specifically name the atlatl. But in testimony, Hinkle, R-Thompson Falls, said the atlatl falls squarely under his bill.

And while spear hunting is not expressly prohibited by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, it is not allowed, either.

Hinkle's bill has gotten a lot of grief from liberal commentators who think it only confirms what they've thought all along: Conservatives want to take Montana back to the Stone Age

"It's a highly effective weapon," he said. "If it were not a highly effective weapon, we would have probably gone extinct or become vegetarians.
"It took us from the role of scavenger, opportunist hunters to big game hunters," he said

The governor has not taken an official stance on the spear bill, Schweitzer spokeswoman Sarah Elliott said, but "the primary purpose of this session should be about creating jobs, lowering taxes and funding education not wasting time on frivolous legislation." Elliott also said an atlatl demonstration "probably won't be necessary."

If I could hunt something with an AK, who gives a **** if I'm out there hurling spears in vain.

I'd support that bill just because it's ****ing hilarious.

Jesus wept. Take your half arsed ideas to political.

Animals were hunted down by any means that "we" could figure out. Running them into a closed valley and stoning them from above was a favorite.

Think about it.

OK, my argument failed right there. Go back to sleep.

30,000 years of atlatls says you're wrong. Running game down is hardly the only way hunting was accomplished.

You're silly quip about 'liberals' simply says you're stupid.

I don't think so, running game down to exhaustion was one of many methods used by ancient man for hunting. Even in modern times there are different methods for hunting different animals. Going squirrel hunting? You can probably leave your .300 Savage at home, Elk hunting? Might want to bring something other than a shotgun with birdshot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistence_hunting

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlatl

Different areas, different game, different techniques.

Anyway, if MT allows bow hunting why not spear hunting? I would consider both of those a slightly more "earned" kill than rifle hunting (not that rifle hunting is easy)

Now all we need is China to bring the Wooly Mammoths to Montana and we can really have an ice age!

Part of the article:

"In fact, Perkins, who once killed a bison by throwing a spear with an atlatl, is willing to drive to the capital city to demonstrate how well the weapon works."

Wonder if he was on horseback or if the bison was tied up...

My wife's father owns a nice chunk of property right on the Yellowstone (google Miner, Montana and it's the green (irrigated) spot in the center of the map) and there are enough animals there that come close enough to the back deck (probably because of the irrigated grass), that I think with minimal practice, this would be perfectly reasonable to accomplish.

I'll stick to firearms for hunting, as I believe in a quick kill, but it's not that hard to imagine this being commonplace in MT.
