Default Fun bits from JDM land

GT-B Bilsteins

The Legacy needed new struts, and these OEM bilsteins came up on ebay fairly cheap. I guess now it'll be a LS-B.

Gotta be lower than the 125k that are on the ones i have. Those are stock springs and bilsteins are pretty durable, i think they'll be just dandy.

*edit* I checked against the engine from the same car and it looks like they have about 85k on them. We'll see how they do when they get here tomorrow ^_^

You should feel lucky that those struts you bought do not have 300k+ on them

yeah I emailed Bilstien and after mailing the tech guy pictures of mine he said they could be rebuilt for approx $70 each. fyi.

the question is, how do I know if they need rebuilt? I just bought them because they were pretty.

I wonder if some sort of crude testing can be done at home? FSM has some instructions for testing sideways play of piston rod, but I am not sure those specs would apply here? Btw, will OEM dust boots fit on these? If I am gonna pull those apart to test, might as well change a few rubber parts.

I got the bilsteins installed as-is and they dampen very well. The car handles a lot better than it did with the OE shocks. Can't wait to see how it does at the autocross this sunday. I'd post pics but i don't have a digicam, and the car sits more or less like stock.

well, I guess you'll just have to do it the old fashioned way. Take pictures with a film camera, develop and print them, and then mail us all a copy...

So I put those bilsteins on.
To me it seems like it dropped an inch or two, its freaking stiff compared to old worn struts and now I got a front left corner clunk over every small bump. Don't think its these struts though, probably some bushing died when I was trying to break those strut bolts loose.

Here's how it sits on these bilsteins

I'm no expert but it seems like it dropped an inch or two.

As for noise source - I banged on everything today and seems like its a bad topmount - I get similar sounds if I bang on coil spring.

So what are my options for good topmounts?

I'm 99% sure that they're a dircect fit. The other 1% would tell me that you have to rotate the front tophats to make them fit, but they will fit anyways.

Finally got some time fix the noisy strut. Stupid me. Topmount might have been good all the way, but the spring was not seated correctly in the groove in the lower seat and what I though was a coil in the groove turned out to be a piece of rubber from the top spring seat. I should have looked closer before putting those in.
I put new topmount and the rubber thingy, now it is nice and quiet. Will change the other side later, I'm due for axle change on the pass side anyway.
So to sum up my ebay used jdm bilstein struts purchase - not that bad, could have been much worse.

Hm, there was no noise for a few days and today it came back as loud as before. Which makes me think that it was either not the topmount or the strut is bad and it killed another topmount (which would be strange cause car handles fine, and left and right corners react the same if I push them down , but only left one is noisy while driving).
Any thoughts guys?
