Default 2012 Impreza Sound Deadening

I got a new head unit and speakers installed in my car last weekend. The new system sounds great when I'm driving slowly, but once I get up to highway speed, all the road noise creates quite a racket that sort of ruins it. I'm sure you all are familiar with what I'm talking about. I know that replacing the tires will make a big difference, and I'll do that when the tires wear out, but they've got a while to go.

When I was getting the system installed, I mentioned to the installers that I was considering putting dynamat/raammat/whatever in the doors. They said it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble, and that putting the sound deadening material on the strut towers (front and rear) would be much more effective, since that's where the road noise gets transmitted to the car. Makes sense to me, but I've got little experience in these things.

I've seen threads with people putting several layers of dynamat on every surface of their car, which of course gets expensive and heavy. I'd rather not do that.

So, wise men and women of NASIOC, if I want to use a limited amount of Dynamat or similar material, where should I apply it to create the biggest decrease in road noise?

I'm sure Flyboy will be along shortly to answer this question. He's in the process of a full Dynamat installation, I believe.

I'm also interested in getting the car quieter. It was so noise when it gets to the 60+mpg. I know the stock tires have to do with it, but I think the car can get some improvement there too.

Dynamat (and similar materials) should only be used to dampen the resonance (vibration) of the panel in question, and you should only use enough to "deaden" the panel. Covering the entire door, floor, or any other panel in Dynamat is a waste of money, and adds unnecessary weight to the car. Using multiple layers is just ridiculous.

Dynamat by itself will NOT block the transmission of sound.

You should use small pieces of Dynamat (or a similar material) to deaden the panel, and then use something like mass loaded vinyl to block the transmission of sound. Ideally the mass loaded vinyl should to sit on top of a layer of closed cell foam, which helps disperse the sound waves.

This site has a lot of good information on automotive sound deadening.

I plan on tackling the floor and doors of my Impreza this summer.

lolno. That's what I do now, but then when I slow down from highway speed I realize that I'm blasting my eardrums out. I'd also like to be able to hold a conversation with a passenger in the back seat, for instance.
