1998 Legacy GT OEM Suspension Options
Does anyone know or know where I can find out what other OEM Subaru suspension setups bolt right into the Legacy GT sedan from 97-99? I thought that the 98-01 RS fit right in but I browsed through Teague's Auto and found the rears to be different? I'm trying to stay cheap but will get new tophats if needed.

The only thing different about the rears is the tophats. (and the springs are different because of the weight difference)

i know you said you are looking for oem but just thought i would mention that the H&R's have a pretty nice even look to them...not too low or anything. Also it helps get rid of some of that extra lift in the front.

Trust me on this one.. stay away from the impreza suspension and just go with legacy stuff from the get go.. you will save $100 or so with used WRX stuff but its really worth it to get legacy stuff from the start. If you wanna stay stock-ish.. just get a set of GR-2s off ebay and use your stock GT springs.. the gR-2's are about 25% stiffer than the stock oem struts and you GT springs are about 25% stiffer than stock legacy springs.. so with that combo (gr-2 + GT springs) same ride height and stiffer ride.

i have h&r sports on the kyb gr2's and i think they work well. It is a good ride not too stiff or anything but a good stiffness level, especially for daily driver.

Awesome, that was exactly the info I was looking for. Thanks Spdracr00. I'll get the GR-2s and get the GT springs from the dealer along with mounts. The car already has an aftermarket rear sway so it should feel firm and I won't have to worry about scraping stuff on these crappy New England roads.

the only thing is that it will sit up like stock and personally i think thats a little high but the gr2's are good

The tophat nut is not that bad. Worst case, go to repair shop close to home, have them loosen it with the air gun and then drive home to complete the job. Go back after you are done for tighening.
I bought a strap wrench in the bargain bin for $8 the other day. Should work as well. |

I need to step in again... you got the top hat issue messed up..
The rear upper-spring perch(tophat) is the same. I'm running a full WRX strut/spring setup on my 99legacy wagon. all i had to do to make this work was get some Impreza upper-spring perches(tophats) for the front. impreza springs taper at the top in the front, but do not taper in the rear. now keep in mind if you're gonna use impreza parts on your legacy (which i say NO) you need to find 02/03 wrx struts/springs/perches. which goes the same for RS stuff, but why use RS stuff when WRX is better? |

So what you're saying (technically, not ethically) is that I could go out to Ebay and grab one of the used 02/03 assembled sets and drop it in for $150 instead of dropping $650 on a whole new setup?

I think I'll just pick up the 02-03 WRX complete setup and call it a day. GC stuff doesn't hold the weight of the Legacy very well apparently so goot call Spdracr.. I feel like I just called Geico. |

ive read that you CAN use WRX suspension, but its not wise to do so, mainly because of the 300-400 lbs of "car weight" difference. i know i wont do it.

According to Edmunds, the GD weighs 3085lbs and the BD weighs 3090lbs. Albeit Edmunds is not the end-all-be-all of car specs but I would guess that it's pretty close.
According to the spring rates of the WRX matched against the 90-94 Legacy spring rates (link below), the WRX has stiffer fronts with slightly softer rears. Does anyone know the spring rates of the 97-99 GT springs to see how they match up against the WRX? http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtop...ht=spring+rate Either way my set of WRX suspension will be here next week and I'll post how it feels.
